I've been sewing my entire life and while I'm new to teaching in a formal setting I've been helping my friends and classmates with sewing since I was in high school. I can teach you basics like how to sew a button and we can work our way up to sewing an outfit.

I can teach you: building (sewing a item of clothing from scratch), altering, tailoring, repairing, embroidery, beading, prop making, hand stitching, machine stitching, how to use a serger, how to read and use patterns, how to plan a project, how to draft a basic pattern, beginner upholstery, and what I call "make it work" sewing tricks for when you don't have fancy equipment or supplies.

If you have a specific project (I'm looking at you, cosplayers and diy Halloween enthusiasts) or if you want to learn a skill that you will use for the rest of your life. I can help.

About Kathren

I'm a grad student at George Washington University who just moved to the DC area from Chicago, and I'm originally from Texas. I'm a maker who specializes in sewing but I dabble in many other media. I learned everything I know by choosing a project and learning what I needed to to complete that pr

I've been sewing since I was 13. I've sewn things over the years such as dresses, pajamas. I do a lot of tailoring and alterations too. I just love to sew, and I love teaching people to sew too!

The way that I teach is to help the student develop their own style. I have students work on their own individual projects that they pick out while asking me questions that they might have while they are doing their project.

However, if they would like there is an option for me to develop lessons for the student on certain sewing techniques that the student could learn. Although, be aware that learning how to sew takes time and that all the techniques of sewing cannot be done all at once.

Then, there is the third option that the lesson could be a mix of the student doing what they want (choosing their own project) and learning some pre-designed techniques.

My first goal is to give my students all of the tools they need to feel confident from the very first lesson. I would like ...

I was having issues modifying patterns. Vena helped me understand how pattern making works and how to resolve my issues. She is knowledgeable and a natural teacher. What could have been complicated and difficult to learn was easy and straightforward. I highly recommend her as a teacher.

Vena is a consummate professional. My son wanted to learn some basic sewing skills, as well as learn how to make clothes and accessories. In the first 1.5 hour lesson at our home, he completed a simple zipper bag. Over the course of six lessons he made a messenger bag, dress shirt and started on pants - which he finished while we were on vacation. Vena is an expert and also knows how to tailor her lessons to her individual students work style, needs and goals. I give her my highest recommendation. My son will be working with her again to learn how to design his own creations. Five stars all the way.

"Maria is a fantastic pattern maker and sewing teacher! She was able to make a pattern out of my existing garment without taking it apart and walked me through all the steps of re-creating the item. Not only is she very knowledgable, she is also a great teacher and was able to explain things to me so I could retain them and practice on my own. I was completely new to sewing and she patiently answered all my questions and made sure I was comfortable with the different stitches. She also taught me how to setup and use my new sewing machine! Maria is a very down to earth and easy going person; it was really fun chatting during our lessons. I will definitely be back for more lessons!"
