Nancy R. Irvington, NY

About Nancy

Hi, everyone -- Whether you want to be a professional singer, audition for your school musical, NYSSMA, All-State chorus, college and conservatory, or whether you just want to have fun and hit those high notes in the shower, I would love to teach you. Your voice deserves to be heard! I'm a classically trained soprano with undergraduate and master's degrees from the Manhattan School of Music, Mannes School of Music and Brown University. I've been teaching privately for seven years. I've sung leading roles with the Caramoor Music Festival, Glimmerglass Opera and the Aspen Music Festival. I studied voice with Uta Graf at the Manhattan School of Music and then privately with Amy Zorn of the Westminster Choir College. My classical background gives me a sound grounding in vocal technique,

Nancy is awesome! I'm so happy I have this opportunity to tell everyone what a really great person and teacher she is. She's really demanding (but in a nice way) and knows her stuff technically, but she's also really encouraging and kind and I feel like she "gets" her students.

I'm going into my junior year at Cornell where I'm studying pre-med, and believe it or not I really feel like voice lessons with Nancy helped me get here. I love singing, but never had much confidence. I started taking lessons with Nancy my senior year in high school and she helped me sing so much better than I ever thought i could. She was really supportive of my song-writing too. I ended up getting a good part in the school musical (I went to a super competitive high school too) and performing my own songs at a couple of local venues.

Then as part of my college applications she suggested that I include a recording of me performing some French art songs by Claude Debussy. Not that I was a classical singer or was even going to study music seriously in college, but my family is French and I really like the poetry of Paul Verlaine. Nancy introduced me to some cool Debussy settings of Verlaine poems. I thought the songs would be way too hard for me, but with Nancy's help I actually sang them really well and did a good recording that I think helped set me apart in my college applications.

Now when I come back home I always have a few lessons with Nancy. (I still compose and perform my own songs) And don't tell anyone, but she's a lot better than any of the voice teachers at Cornell! Not naming names of course.

I have been taking singing lessons from Nancy for about 3 months now.
Nancy's approach to teaching is very different. She does not try to fit you in a syllabus. She patiently understands what areas you need to focus on singing and where you are in singing and works with you towards achieving your singing goals.

with Me, I am OK in identifying pitch, but had trouble calming my nerves, and that came in the way of singing my high range notes.

Nancy helped Me on this area. She always spends time in making me relax with breathing exercises before singing. I cant believe how much progress i have made in three months.

would definitely recommend for any body who is at any level of singing and would like to sing better

Excellent Voice Teacher

My teenage daughter has been taking voice lessons with Nancy for over a year. We have seen such great improvement in her technique as well as in her confidence. Nancy is very patient and provides constructive feedback which has enabled my daughter to grow vocally. I am so pleased with Nancy as a voice instructor that I now have my other daughter beginning vocal lessons with her.

Finding my inner voice

It's been a year since I started singing lessons with Shelly in my home. Besides her extreme talent, that she is reliable, trustworthy, patient and kindhearted, and my 4 dogs love her as much as I do, Shelly has been the perfect singing teacher for me. I am not a stage performer, nor do I intend to be, but I am a trial attorney and do speak in front of audiences often. After some health issues last year, I decided to conquer the stress in my life and find my inner voice. I love to sing but have had no lessons and rarely sing in front of others. I am not even sure I have any talent. Shelly has been wonderful with helping me find out if I do, but even more importantly, she allows me to have fun with singing. Finding my inner voice is allowing me to find inner peace and strength, and this has been such a great way to relieve stress. I am loving it.

Gained more confidence since my first lesson

Shelly is a wonderful vocal coach. We always have a lot of fun and I always look forward to my lessons. She helps me feel more confident about singing in front of people. Because of Shelly, my singing has made a big improvement since last year. She is an amazing teacher and I am lucky to have her as my coach.

Jillian's really smart and nice

I started taking lessons with Jillian around when i started high school a couple years ago. I play french horn in school, and I'm considering studying music in college, so I definitely needed to know more music theory. I play guitar too, so we started studying songwriting, too, so that I can write some songs with my band. Jillian's so nice, and really smart, so she makes it really easy to learn! I really like classes with her.

One of the best teachers I have ever had

I am a 15 years old and have been taking lessons with Jillian for about a year and a half. I started out as a beginner and she was so patient with me and encouraged me continuously so that I can feel confident in myself. She also made the experience so much fun, while other teachers I've had made it stressful. She is also so knowledgable and talented but never made me feel bad that i wasnt at her level. Jillian is also cares about all her students and their progress. I cant recommend her enough to everyone who wants to learn!!

1st Lesson

My 1st lesson with Jason was very relaxed & professional. I learned more in 45 minutes than the last 5 months on my own in regards to reading music, rhythm, timing and playing the notes on the staff. He is very patient and knowledgeable. His diversity in music provides an understanding of where you are at and where you want to go with music. I look forward to my next lesson with Jason.

Jason knows the classical guitar.

I have been teaching myself for the past 1 1/2 year using an online course. Although it is a beginner course Jason has chosen to use the content of that course. He has been able to take the music and increase the skill level to an intermediate level. He has also introduce me to the modern guitar music that this course would not address. Lessons were so helpful I initially increased my sessions from 30 min. up to 45 and then up to the full hour.
Tara L. Hastings on Hudson, NY

About Tara

I have a Masters in Education as well as having spent many years performing, teaching in one on one and group settings both privately and at music camps and festivals. I play and teach bluegrass, old time, Irish, and swing jazz styles. I like my students to really enjoy playing music and their lessons as well as learning to become fluent in the language of music. It is not required that folks learn to read music necessarily, but it can be a part of the lessons if desired. I love to see my students able to continue learning and playing on their own, be able to hold their own at jams and on the stage is they so desire, or just enjoy making music for themselves. I have techniques that have proven effective to help get past jam phobia, that help folks learn to improvise who have not had any ...

I took mandolin lessons from Tara for about a year and a half, and I can't say enough good things about her. I was a complete beginner when I started with her, and now I feel prepared and comfortable when I play at jams. Tara taught me a wide repertoire of tunes. She taught me ways to play different chords, how to move chords, how different players may use different chords in different styles, how to read guitar chords, how to adapt when guitars use capos, and how to simplify or add chords. She has really good insight on how to start improvising and taking breaks. I think she adapts her teaching to use the technique that will help make the concept make sense to you. She is a lot of fun to learn from, and it is super inspiring to watch her play. Tara is an awesome teacher, and I highly recommend her!

Tara has been teaching our 8 year old Evan Bluegrass guitar for a little over two years. He looked forward to his weekly opportunity to learn and play with Ms. Tara. To watch her interact - educate - and entertain Evan - was just a joy. We are sorry she has left Virginia - impossible to replace - if you get the chance - take it! She is an amazing teacher and a great friend of our Son.

I've been taking lessons from Tara now for the better part of 4 years. She is talented, professional, engaging, knowledgeable, and most importantly, patient. She taught this old dog a lot of new tricks on the Mandolin. I still have a long way to go, but if you are looking for a Mando teacher, this lady is tops in my book. Sorry she left VA, but NY got themselves one good musician and teacher.
