I encourage creative thinking, self-directed learning, and creative problem-solving. By asking students leading questions, I model for them how task and answer questions to seek information. I also encourage engaged learning, contemplation, and discussion. I help my students develop skills to analyze and evaluate information, as well as create meaningful, thoughtful work. About Karrin B.

Karrin B. is a licensed K-9 educator (Illinois) with 12+ years of classroom and 3 years of online teaching experience. Karrin creates and publishes instructional books, curriculum, games, and apps for young thinkers and their caretakers. She is an Apple Distinguished Educator (ADE) and Google for Education Certified Trainer (GoogleCT).  

Karrin has an undergraduate degree in French from University of Illinois at Chicago and a Master's degree in Teaching Elementary Education from National-Louis University. She enjoys using inquiry-based learning and design-thinking in her classroom to maximize student learning as well as encourage student voice and choice.  She is also a writer, speaker, and advocate for creativity and collaboration in the classroom.  Karrin lives in Oak Park, Illinois with her husband and three dogs. In 2019, Karrin founded Flying Start, an online teaching and learning community for young thinkers ages 4-7.

Get Your Facts Straight: Addition and Subtraction within 20 is a positive, fun, interactive class based on the Singapore philosophy of problem-solving and deep-mathematical thinking. Participants interact with each other and the teacher.  Students will use manipulatives, drawing, games, and expressions and equations to practice addition and subtraction within 20.  This class is appropriate for students who have some experience with math foundations such as count sequence, using fingers and objects to count, writing numbers, and solving simple addition and subtraction within 20. 

Sessions are structured to be engaging, fun, interactive, and short (for young attention spans). Although the focus is on addition and subtraction within 20, we also focus on other Kindergarten (and some Grade 1) math standards. Classes will cycle through continuously. 

Each session includes:
- Math story (addition/subtraction problem-solving and discussion) 
- Interactive math activity via whiteboard (examples include: addition, subtraction, counting, composing and decomposing numbers, number/quantity identification, comparing numbers, making 10, and identifying patterns)
- A fun group math game via whiteboard
