Classical music is the foundation for everything else!

I have been teaching piano for over 40 years, full-time for the past 15. Besides the actual repertoire, technique and theory are always included in my lessons because they are essential. Sight reading and ear training are also included in some lessons.

I stress accuracy in playing and attention to details! I also teach my students HOW to practice. Slow, accurate practice is the answer. Practicing takes patience!

Please note: Home lessons must be at a location that I can get to easily with public transportation. I do not have a car.

About Emil

I started to study the piano at the age of seven with Hrant Minassian in my hometown of Island Park, New York. During high school I continued my studies with Jack Chaikin , a graduate of the Juilliard School. I attended Hofstra University where I received a B.A. in Music in 1979. At Hofstra, my pian

I took up the piano as an adult, without having had any experience in it as a child (though I played guitar through college). I tried a few instructors prior to discovering Emil, with whom I have been studying now for over 2 years.

Emil is a wonderful teacher. He is far and away the most accomplished piano player I have studied with, and his knowledge of, and facility for, playing really comes through in his instruction. He is always bringing formal instruction back to the act of performance, and how to make whatever piece you are working on, even the simplest, sound the best that it can be.

Emil isn't afraid to share his own struggles with whatever piece he is currently working on, and pointing out that he faces the same challenges that every practicing player faces.

Emil is personable, knowledgeable, and kind. I can't recommend him highly enough as an instructor.
Travis
A wonderfully skilled teacher with decades of experience, Emil will certainly help take your playing to the next level.

Emil is very easy to work with and is a fun and inspired teacher. My daughter loves taking lessons from him.

I have been teaching piano almost as long as I have been performing, coming up on 10 years. To date, I have taught lessons to over 100 different students ranging in age from 5 to 70, and ranging in skill from complete beginner to college piano performance major. I can teach students of any level and help them overcome any problem, whether that is a technical problem, interpretative problem, or having pain during playing.

Not every student is going to think I’m the best fit for them. I expect consistent practice, completion of assignments, and attention to detail in music. I have had many trial lessons that don’t pan out because the student or parent thinks my expectations are too high for them. Make no mistake; I expect a lot, but I also care deeply about music and have great understanding and sympathy for those who genuinely try. Whether your goal is to learn to read music, improve rhythm, learn to play the great classical repertoire, or simply have a good time learning the ...

About Kessa

I received my BM in piano performance from Brigham Young University, studying under Dr. Richard Anderson and Dr. Irene Peery-Fox. While there, I studied pedagogy from master teachers Dr. Irene Peery-Fox and Dr. Jared Pierce, who taught me both how to run a studio and how to manage individual lessons

Excellent. Nothing gets by her; very helpful.

I had the opportunity to work with Kessa when we were both in undergrad and I was trying to decide whether or not to become a music major. I was feeling pretty discouraged with my current piano teacher at the school and talked with Kessa since we had a class together and I knew she was a piano major. I had a few lessons with her and she gave me so many helpful ideas about how to approach my pieces and improve my practice habits. She was very kind and didn’t make me feel bad at all, but still pushed me hard in those lessons because she believed in me. Even though I ended up deciding not to go into music after all, I still value those few lessons I had with her and recommend her to everyone at any level.
Marissa
Kessa is a very professional and talented piano teacher. My son loves going to lessons and we love hearing him practice such pretty music. We're impressed with Kessa's ability to explain confusing concepts and to encourage my son when he is having a tough time. She's done so well with transitioning to Zoom lessons during the pandemic and we love being able to have lessons from home.

"Gaby is a wonderful musician! By working with her, I have learned so much about songwriting and musical composition. During our sessions, we covered topics such as piano, vocals, recording, melody, etc. Our sessions have made me a more confident singer and writer. She truly cares about her students and works hard to deliver the best results. She encouraged me as a teacher and helped me to finish and record my first demo. After working with her, I am even more inspired to create music and sing! Overall, she is a an excellent teacher and a genuinely kind person!!!"

Kathryn comes with two important strengths. First, she is a working professional, with excellent technique and musicality from real world experience. Secondly, she is patient with students like me who are still figuring it out. Those two things make for a great teacher.
Amanda Testa-Oerth
Kathryn has helped me in my musical journey for a very long time! Over the 15 years I have worked with Kathryn she has been a teacher, life coach, and now musical colleague. Kathryn's teaching style is always warm and very informative. She builds confidence on something I did well, then gives me recommendations on how to improve either a technical skill or with musicality of the piece we are working on. After every lesson, I come out feeling improved and more confident than when I went in. Kathryn has guided me in both classical and musical theater pieces as well as introduced me some very interesting contemporary songs that I have greatly enjoyed. With her guidance and instruction, I have grown into a musician that is confident in my own abilities for preforming and a caring instructor to my own students. I highly recommend studying with Kathryn if you have the chance. It is a fantastic learning experience every class!

Mary is very kind, friendly, understanding, and polite. She is extremely encouraging, and believes in her students! It is usually very hard for me to push past my limits, but with Mary I felt much more confident to do so! But she knows when to tell you to stop. She is very clear, and I learned a lot from her.

My goal as a teacher is to give you the facility to express yourself through music. The key parts to developing this facility are:

1. theory -- if you know your theory, you know the best way to express your idea without having to think about it
2. technique -- the last thing you want is for your technique to hinder your ability to express your idea. Having good technique lets your ideas flow naturally

When you take lessons with me, you get out of it what you put in. Your job as student is to be honest with what you expect to achieve and my job as teacher is to give you the tools to achieve it

About David

I have been playing music almost my entire life. I first started on trombone in 4th grade then switched to guitar in 6th. I picked up the electric bass in my later teenage years and learned the upright bass (both jazz and classical) in college. My students get the benefit of my education, as well

5 lessons in and David has gotten me to break through some of my bad techniques and has also given me completely different ways to think about my instrument. We're just getting started and I couldn't be more excited to see where this journey is going to take my skills.

David was/is a great guitar teacher ! I came to him with some knowledge on how to strum but he completely transformed my technique... making it easier & better to play! I’m looking forward to continuing my lessons with him & improving my guitar skill!! I Highly recommend David !

Very grateful to have found David on this site and add to the chorus of great reviews. I have entered the world of music through the bass guitar with David's instruction and am already hooked. Bass is a fascinating (and challenging) instrument so I appreciate working with a professional who caters to beginners. I am looking forward to exploring more about music with each lesson and gaining more confidence playing this instrument. Thanks David!

"Mr. Leni B. is second to none. He holds a BA degree in music, piano, composition and conducting from Hunter College, the largest college in The City University of New York and obtains a Diploma from the Conservatoire de Fontainebleau, France, I have no doubt about his talents and expertise. His knowledge is tremendously fabulous. What a true musician he is! As an adult, I wonder if Mr. Leni B. would be patient with me. The answer is yes. He patiently teaches me, and corrects my hands using the Taubman Approach to avoid chronical hand, wrist and muscle injuries. I am incredibly grateful to have him for my piano teacher. His passion and dedication are beyond excellent and have been transferred to me. I have brought home with a lot of inspiration after each lesson. I love his analysis and interpretation of each beautiful piece of music. The atmosphere he creates is lovely, friendly, welcoming and open. It is fun to study under his supervision. His encouragement is another key for me to practice the piano everyday. I am absolutely proud of him. It is even multipled when I have figured out he has more talents than just music and piano which are already amazing. Mr. Leni B. is the best teacher because he teaches from the heart not from the book. He is too good to be true.

I highly recommend Mr. Leni B. to anyone who wants to take piano lessons for fun or seriously."

Tanisha is passionate about the act of teaching. There is a positive relationship between teacher and singer. When a vocal exercise is offered, an explanation of purpose is accompanied. She makes me the singer, part of the process by explaining the purpose of each exercise. Tanisha is a dedicated teacher that guides me."
