I graduated with my Bachelors in Music and Psychology with a focus on opera voice in 2009. In my performance program I really grew as a vocalist and learned how to overcome my own obstacles and improve my vocal technique for myself. I feel confident now in sharing my experience and my education with my students so they are able to really grow and improve as well. I started professionally and privately studying vocal technique when I was 17 and prior to that I was performing musical theater in school and in community performance groups. I really found my passion in classical repertoire and studied with numerous private teachers who were professional opera singers such as, Carol Yahr, Maria Fattore, and Annelise Von Georken. Wanting to share my passion for music and help others reach their full potential as a singer I went back for my m
asters program in music education at Hofstra University where I am currently finishing up my degree. Hofstra has really broadened my knowledge of teaching styles and pedagogies. I am also currently student teaching in public schools as well so I am teaching young adults and young children everyday and I know how to accommodate for different learning styles and help all children.

*** Lesson Details ***
I really want my students to enjoy singing and find a passion in performing. I truly believe that singing should be a combination of passion and also technique. My lessons will focus on the fundamentals of singing in order to provide healthy vocal technique and a beautiful tone. It is extremely important in all genres for singing to have support, be able to use breath properly and have an understanding how of use the voice as an instrument properly to achieve a beautiful tone. After a few I would like students to not only have improved their sound and have songs they are confident in performing, but an understanding of how to read music and sight singing at the level of the student. I also focus on performance and making sure that my students not only sound beautiful and gain the proper vocal technique but that they perform to the public and have great stage presence. Being able to convey meaning and emotion to a song while performing is equally as important as singing properly. I also love to help students be creative and write and create their owns songs.

I really enjoy and teaching classical music and opera voice. Although I teach all different styles and genres, from broadway to pop, to classical, and jazz. It is extremely important to have great breathe support and ability to create resonance in order to have a beautiful legato tone. With piano I teach beginners how to read music, play in tempo and basic right hand and left hand coordination.

Hello! My name is Karmyn and I am a professional singer/actress and vocal teacher/technician. In my journey to become a vocal artist, I had to discover the proper techniques to allow me to sing both classical and musical theatre. Being a professional vocalist, I had to find something that worked safely and effectively!

*** My Story ***

When I entered college in the 1993, I had high hopes for my voice. My usable range was quite large for my age: G3 to E6. During my collegiate training I began to notice problems: jaw pain that I had never had before, loss of breath control and forced high notes that used to feel so natural. Unfortunately, because of this training
, I left college with a shrunken range: A3 to Ab5, I had lost more than an octave as a result of poor training by a doctorate of music.

In 1995 I won Miss Louisiana (Miss America). I was blessed to received scholarship for the rest of school. One of the colleges that provided money was the University of Louisiana Monroe. I decided to take summer sessions with Dr. Weidman. He realized quite quickly that I had been given the wrong Fach and technique for my voice type and encouraged me to stop with my former teacher and give my voice a break. And I did.

In fact, I decided to focus on acting. The closest acting community was Dallas, Texas. There I was picked up by the Ivett Stone Agency and began booking national commercials, TV spots and films. Along the way I worked with Don Shook of the (then) Actors Company in Dallas, TX. Don listened to my vocal story and told me about his teacher, Bill Bauer.

Bill became my vocal mentor and saving grace. He taught me how to release the tension of poor training and build the technique that lasts a lifetime! I am forever in his debit as my Angel of Voice!

Along with his guidance and genius he helped developed a safe, powerful technique for all vocal genres. I’m so confident that this method will work that I can I guarantee your singing and/or speaking voice will be the best EVER!

In addition to Bill's technique, in 2005, I began incorporating the Gary Catona Method for both my speaking and singing students. It is a powerful Bel Canto vowel method that strengthens and heals all voice types!

Whether you are a beginner and want a solid technique, or you have experienced bad training and need to retrain, I guarantee this method will work for you!

*** How I Can Help You***

I have taught both singing and acting for over 17 years and have the honor of working with some amazing students including, American Idol finalist Rachel Hale, Singer/Song writer Sara Skinner, Bluegrass singer Joseph Hott, Actress Molly Quinn, Actor John R Colley, Ark-La-Tex’s country star, Klancy Johnson, singer/actress Tara Clem and many, many more.

Here are some examples of how I can help: vocal node/polyp elimination therapy, increasing vocal range, eliminating “breaks” in your range, supported sound, natural breathing techniques, body alignment, conquering performance anxiety, stage presence, song interpretation, and positive internal programming.

I began teaching private vocal lessons in 1998. I have taught for two schools of music, First United Methodist Music School in Texarkana, Arkansas and Burbank Music Academy in Burbank, California. In 2007, I began offering vocal lessons online through Skype. My current studio is located in Manhattan.

I've been a member of the National Association of Teacher's of singing for 6 years and am also a member of Actors Equity, SAG-AFTRA, NARAS (the Grammy's) and a lifetime member for the music fraternity Sigma Alpha Iota. I hold 2 Fine Arts degrees in Music and Drama as well as a Bachelor of Applied Arts; Sciences in Administrative Leadership with an emphasis in Psychology.

*** Lesson Details ***

In your lesson, I start where you're at. I identify immediate problems and then put you on a regimen to move you toward your vocal best. I am a stern but encouraging teacher. I expect a vocalist to practice.

Whether a beginner or seasoned performer. My goal is to get your voice to a place of ease in production and to articulate your performance in a way to connect with your audience.

Each lesson is recorded and emailed so you can listen and practice. Practicing is imperative to building your vocal muscles and performance skills.

Here is a list of other benefits that I provide: ear training, finding your true voice - not just an imitation of your favorite vocalist, smart career goal setting, overcoming stage fright, audition/interview techniques, positive self-programming, finding your acting "type"career marketing strategies, how to work "where you're at", scene study, monologue preparation, and a building basic musical theatre audition book.

Born in Cebu City, Philippines in 1990, raised primarily in Phnom Penh, Cambodia and other Southeast Asian countries, and pursuing further education in the United States of America, Hopengrace ("Penny") is a Global Nomad currently situated in the Greater New York City Area.

She started taking music lessons from her mother at the age of four and learned to read music at the same time she started to read storybooks. ​From the age of ten, Hopengrace took violin lessons, during her parents' rare furloughs, from Mr. Frederico Regner, a World War II veteran returned from the United States. While in the Philippines for a combined year of junior and senior level high school, she took violin lessons from Mr. Marc Hamlet Mercado and Mr. Rodelio Flores. Hopengrace has also taken coaching from Ms. Princess Christine Ybañez to prepare for competit
ion in the Solo String (Bowed) category of the 14th National Student Convention in which she won 2nd Place.

In 2007, Hopengrace received a Presidential Scholarship from Tennessee Temple University (TTU). There she studied violin under Mrs. Laura Minor (B.Mus. Vanderbilt University, MA Music NYU). She also took piano from Mrs. Carolyn Kemp​ (BS Mus.Ed. Baptist Bible College, MA Mu. Ed. University of Tennessee at Chattanooga) and voice from Dr. William Knowles and Mr. Michael Mays (BS Mus. Perf. University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, MA Church Music Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary).

In 2008, as a member of TTU's Weigle Concert Choir, Hopengrace had the privilege to be chosen to sing with a combined choir in Carnegie Hall's Stern Auditorium with the Manhattan Chamber Orchestra under the baton of Dr. David Thye, Principal Conductor-in-Residence of MidAmerica Productions. She became a member of the Chattanooga Symphony and Opera Youth Orchestra (CSOYO) ​in the fall of that year and continued performing with them for three seasons. She also participated in the special orchestra for the annual Chattanooga Boys' Choir "Singing Christmas Tree" concerts at the Tivoli Theatre. In 2010, world-renowned violinist Midori chose CSOYO as one of two youth orchestras for her annual Orchestra Residencies Program, and Hopengrace had the rare opportunity to perform with one of her inspirations in concert.

Hopengrace​ became a registered Suzuki Method Violin Teacher with the Suzuki Association of the Americas on July 2011. She has also trained in Orff-Schulwerk.

During her travels around the world, Hopengrace struggled to keep her art alive. However, she has often been complemented for her distinctive strong, full-bodied tone​ and adaptability. Her range varies from Baroque to Modern. She plays on a John Cheng 1737 "King Joseph" Guarneri model violin with both wood and carbon fiber bows.

​Hopengrace welcomes students and employment while she prepares for entrance in a Master of Music in Performance program. She hopes to start on that new chapter of her life in the fall of 2013. Inspired by the impact of Venezuela's El Sistema program and her own experiences during her travels, Hopengrace hopes to use her talents to enable or build similar programs both while she teaches and in the lands where she was raised. ​

As a teacher, my goal is to instruct as well as inspire each student to reach for his or her highest potential. I hope to give each student the tools to progress so that one day they can be their own best teacher, and play with a sound and style that is uniquely their own. Most importantly, I hope to instill a desire to learn and a mindset that the art of violin playing is fun and that it is just as we call it--playing. My teaching abilities range from beginning through advanced levels. Students must have a desire to learn and commit to daily (mindful) practice.

I am a Suzuki Violin teacher. This means that I am trained to work with even the youngest of musicians in a nurturing , fun and challenging way. Dr. Suzuki believed that it was important to develop a noble character in all children through the mastery of a musical instrument. He also believed that all children were capable of this mastery if the environment is saturated with music and love. My students enjoy playing the violin because they are given the tools they need to play beautifully and to make progress on their instrument. Each lesson will focus on proper set up and posture, technical work and musical direction/ideas that will inspire them to carry on their work throughout the week. I demonstrate quite a bit in the lessons, as I find it is the most effective way to communicate in music. However, I am only with the student once a week, therefore much of the lesson is geared towards helping the parent and child understand what his/her home tasks are, and how to carry them out successfully. 10 minutes of mindful practice is worth an hour of careless work.

​Parental support and involvement is key to any child’s progress, especially at the beginning stages. Parents of young beginners are encouraged to take a few lessons before starting their child on the instrument. Parents serve as a practice coach/partner during daily home practice sessions and are required to attend and participate in their child’s lessons. Listening to recordings and attending live concerts are strongly recommended to increase musical awareness and enthusiasm in the student.

In spite of my rigorous Suzuki training, my unorthodox learning experience has taught me the value of being flexible and using methods that work best for a specific individual. I am not averse to seeking and applying a new method (eg. traditional, Masterclass, O'Connor, etc.) if the situation calls for it.

What should be expected from a Teacher/Student relationship?

I think a student should expect their teacher to give them honest, thoughtful feedback. Just enough that they can manage the information at that time. The teacher should give detailed instruction on ways the student can improve, without destroying the students sense of self worth or spirit. On the contrary, the teacher must always find a way to see the student as having great potential. This way, no matter how limited the current level of ability may be, there is hope for growth. Even without saying it, the student will feel the teachers' attitude towards him and may become that person (for better or for worse). The student should expect to be challenged, encouraged and inspired by their teacher. The teacher should expect that the student and the parents commit to daily practice, and have a desire to improve. The student must apply his/her teacher's feedback while always searching within himself for ways to develop. Mutual respect is key.

Zhana is a wonderful teacher and person. I started as an adult beginner with her almost 4 years ago, and have continued to go to her despite moving farther away because of her patience, kindness, encouragement, and of course, expertise. I feel lucky to have found her.

If you are looking for an excellent teacher that can help you develop both technique and musicality, I highly recommend Zhana.

I have had the privilege of studying with her for seven months as an adult beginner, and I have learned so much. I come out of every lesson feeling like I’ve made progress—even when I am unhappy with how I am playing, Zhana helps me understand a key thing that I need to do to play better. She is able to explain things so that you don’t just conceptually understand, but so that your body can understand too (for all those times that your brain knows what you need to do but your finger/wrist/arm/etc. won’t cooperate).

Because she has played as a professional performer, Zhana draws on her experience to guide you to bring musicality and emotion to whatever you’re playing… even if you’re still in the early Suzuki books like me. I’ve studied with many teachers in the past (in school and privately) for piano, clarinet and voice lessons, so I know that the ability to teach across this broad spectrum of skills is rare.

Zhana isn’t just a great teacher, she is also a wonderful person. I am moving out of the city for a year, but I fully intend to continue lessons with her when I return!

I played the Donald O'Connor part in Singin' in the Rain on Broadway as well as Charlie in Annie Get Your Gun with Bernadette Peters and then Reba among many other roles......

I ran into Albert in midtown recently and happened to mention an issue that always seems to come whenever I audition generally, and without missing a beat, Albert came up with a perfect, simple solution that had never occurred to me during my entire auditioning career. For free. He’s a problem-solver.

I've studied with wonderful vocal coaches and teachers and Albert is one of the best because he cares so much about his students and gives you the attention you need to support you as a singer. He is a genuine, kind and patient teacher. He listens to whatever you are looking to do as a performer and helps to guide you and get you ready for whatever your needs may be. I have gone to Albert feeling unsure of my talents and left feeling supported and like I could do anything. He is so helpful and positive and I've seen him help so many people achieve success after working with him. I highly recommend him as a teacher and musician.

Having had Albert as my music director on various projects (Dreyfus, Eating Raoul, The Big Bang, many others), I can attest to his uncanny ability with singers in terms of getting from them their very best. His ability to give them an all-around grasp of the material is nonpareil.

I also have to add that his ability with an entire chorus is equally impressive and inspiring for them. Many times members of the cast have approached me to compliment Albert and his unusual and fascinating ways of teaching and imbuing the score "into their very core."

Michael A Tate graduated from the prestigious Music Education Program and Psychology Program at Ithaca College in 2012. Ithaca gave him the incredible opportunity to hone in on his musicianship and compositional skills. He was also able to discover a new medium of composition, film composition. Tate immediately fell in love with the art of writing music for film and was able to make his first musical debut on a film directed by Mike Blaney. In his time at Ithaca College, he composed scores for multiple films and continues to maintain an active composition career. Tate is currently finishing as a music teacher Brooklyn Scholars Charter School (BSCS) and Music Content Leader for National Heritage Academies (NHA) New York Branch. In the fall Tate will be returning to school to study the psychological benefits of music education for children
and adolescents, while teaching private lessons.

Logan is a conscientious teacher with a vast amount of music understanding and ability. He didn't teach over my head though and made learning enjoyable. I would recommend him highly.

I had a great first lesson. Chelsea made me feel comfortable and at ease. I highly recommend her. I had zero experience with string instruments and she gave clear instructions, and even wrote in depth notes for me to study.
