WORKSHOP FOR LEARNING TO SING
COMPETENCY: A SOLID FOUNDATION IN THE BASICS OF SINGING
OBJECTIVE: Students will learn Basic Components of Singing and demonstrate via public (by choice) performance; at the end of course.
Pitch
Rhythm
Breath
Voice
Diction
Pitch
The use of pitch in language to distinguish words. All languages use intonation to express emphasis, contrast, emotion, or other such nuances.
Pitch refers to the notes and sounds that we hear when someone sings, and it determines if the song is going to sound great or not. The singer will have to hit various pitches in a song with a relative amount of accuracy in order to be in tune with the overall music accompaniment and harmonies.
RHYTHM
Every song has a certain beat, and it is essential that we keep to the basic rhythm of the song, or else we might find that we are constantly trying to catch up with the lyrics or always lagging behind. Rhythm also determines the groove of the song, and this is what gets us on our feet and dancing when we listen to upbeat or fast tempo songs.
A great sense of rhythm begins with learning to recognize various beat duration, to vocalize notes with different beats, as well as to be able to keep to the basic tempo of a song.
BREATH CONTROL
Breathing is an essential component of singing, and is what most singing instructors would introduce to students during their first lesson for singing. It is also what most people would want to learn about and also ask questions about.
Breathing is a natural process, and it is not difficult to achieve better breath control for singing. A great breath foundation is needed for singing!
VOICE
To produce great sounds when singing it is essential to adopt beneficial singing habits in order to produce sounds that are more relaxed and healthy.
DICTION
Learning how to produce sound with our voice is not enough. We still need to shape our voice, and form words in a language that our audience will understand.
This is why diction is also one of the vital basics of singing, because it determines whether our audience understands what we are singing, and whether we are able to connect with them through our song. Diction is also a key factor towards hitting the correct pitches, especially for the high notes, and this will be explained in detail.

COURSE OUTLINE:
Lesson 1 PITCH
How to avoid the most common singing mistakes that prevent singers from producing a clean and professional vocal tone.
Objective: Students will learn warm up exercises that strengthen vocal cords and loosen the muscles needed to produce a professional sound./ the importance of singing ‘scales’ to achieve this objective.
Lesson 2 RHYTHM
Rhythms often used in various standard songs.
Objective: Students will listen and learn to identify rhythms used in songs. CD player provided.
Students will learn to tap out the various types of rhythm.
Students will sing a favorite song; using rhythms learned in class.
Lesson 3 BREATH
For the purpose of voice projection, students will learn to breath more from the diaphragm, the muscles beneath the ribcage, as well as the abdominal muscles.
Objective: Students will learn vital techniques to create a connected voice blending head, chest and diaphragm.
Lesson 5 DICTION
How to use the emotions, enunciation and clarity.
Objective: Students will learn to sing a favorite song with focus on elements of singing.
Lesson 6 Review of previous 5 lessons.
Lesson 7 Group/Individual Performances
Objective: Students will show confidence in employing elements from training.
Lessons 8/9/10 Rehearsal for recital TBA

Voice
I am an empathetic teacher, sensitive to the students individual process of learning. My singing lessons usually start with breathing and relaxation exercises. Vocal exercise come next, then when the student is fully warmed up, we will begin to work on songs. It is important that the student be part of the process of picking material since the more they personally respond to the material the more apt they are to be engaged in their lessons and the more quickly they will learn. After three to six months they will understand the fundamentals of breathing and relaxation and its importance to proper vocal training. They will have begun the process of extending their range and will understand the principles of performance in song.
Acting
As an acting teacher and coach, I tailor my classes to the needs of each student. I utilize improvisatory and sensory techniques to help unleash spontaneity. I also encourage the students to use their personal experiences as a way to access a full range of emotions. I enjoy working with the student on script analysis, so as to discover the underlying motivations of the character the student is working on.
Creative and Lyric Writing
I use prompts as a way to get the student writing. Often, I will ask the student to write for stretches of time without editing themselves. It is important to unleash imagination before beginning the process of editing. Many times it is the unexpected that is the must compelling.

About Bridget
I have been a professional voice, music theory and piano teacher for the last ten years, and have loved every minute of it. I am originally from Canada, and went to the University of Windsor to study vocal performance. I was given an opportunity to the study principals of classical singing and musical theater. From there, I began to work as a featured classical soloist and choral singer throughout Canada. I came to New York to continue my studies, and earned a Master of Music degree in Classical Voice from the Manhattan School of Music.

I believe that singing lessons should be a lot of fun. With good technique, my students and I can team up to accomplish anything from singing classical songs and even some opera arias to popular songs and musical theater. It is my goal to help you discover your own personal voice, and build confidence
in your individual gifts. My students have gone on to study voice in college and university, perform in musical theater, sing in rock bands, children and adult choirs and even win a competition or two. I love hearing my students perform, and feel that an opportunity to sing in front of others builds confidence and ability. I take pride in arranging recitals for my students who would like this opportunity.

*** Lesson Details ***
My lessons with always begin with warm ups and technique. We'll also focus on an important principal topic, such as breath and support, vowel placement or expression. We'll use some exercises that I have already, or perhaps a new one just for your needs (once I get to know your voice) to help you achieve our goals. We'll then work on 1-2 songs. You'll probably have picked one, and I may have picked one. The concept that we worked on in our technique session will be applied directly to the songs you are working on. You can learn so many different things in each song, we may practice your songs, using a different goal in several different lessons.
All of my students get a chance to perform in occasional "vocal class" settings, where you can sing your favorite songs for one another, in a fun, laid back environment. All students are welcome to participate in an annual recital for their family and friends too! Piano lessons are designed to suit your needs. We can work on the basics for classical playing, read chords, jazz improv and more.

*** Studio Equipment ***
I have my own music studio set up in my apartment. On teaching days, my living room can be a comfortable waiting room for parents/guardians. You are all most welcome to relax, have a cup of tea or coffee and listen to our lessons. I do ask that you do not sit inside the studio (at least not after the first lesson) as this can be distracting for your child. My studio is equipped with a music stand, upright piano, work sheets for theory, pencils and crayons. I also have a full Broadway and classical music library that students can borrow from, CD/DVD's that can be borrowed, and a New Grove Reference set.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I bring some music, until we assess the student's needs, then they may buy some books, while I provide the rest. I bring theory worksheets, stickers, pencils etc. If a student would like to sing/play a particular song (Broadway/pop etc) I may have it in my music library.If I do not, the student will need to purchase the music they would like to sing. The student would need a keyboard/piano in their home should I travel. I have a piano in my home.

I - Silent Foundation

The silent foundation refers to the condition of your instrument as it is silent. If we are looking at the body as an instrument that sings, we first have to make sure that our instrument is in good condition. How healthy is your instrument? Is it well rested, well hydrated and loose? Or is it tired, dehydrated and tense? As you could guess, the condition of your instrument will have a significant impact on the quality of the sounds you make. So the first thing to be addressed is how your instrument is before it starts making sound.

II - Conditioning of Singing Behaviors

This is when we get busy. Once we have a well rested, healthy, hydrated and relaxed instrument we can start working it out. The goal is to condition our singing behaviors to be reflexive, reliable and strong. The way to do this is through a series of vocal exercises that will condition your voice to respond to the desires of your heart. Whatever it is that you want to express will be possible once your instrument is conditioned to the point where there is no gap between what you want to express and your ability to do so. Learning to sing is all about learning how to express yourself without barriers. You should be able to develop enough range, power, control and skill so that you can express your heart without feeling like you'™re incapable of achieving what you pursue. In a one hour lesson, we will spend twenty five minutes on vocal exercises designed to teach support and placement. Having performed leads on and Off Broadway, I know that without good technique you can't do eight shows a week, do back to back sets in a nightclub or cabaret or tour as a pop or rock singer. The second half of the lesson is spent on songs. As an acting as well as vocal coach, I focus on dramatics as well as musical interpretation. A singer must be connected to the words as well as the music. I hope to teach you to love singing as much as I do.

Mary Phillips is excellent! I highly recommend her. Her knowledge of technique and her ability to explain it's proper applications helped my daughter improve not only her vocal quality but her range. Mary also worked on building her self confidence and attitude. I've notice a significant improvement in her approach to auditions. She is less nervous and more confident in her skills. We had a hard time trying to find an instructor who values someone with a lower range. I wish we had found her earlier!

I foster a safe, relaxed and engaging environment to explore truthful human behavior on stage.

The objective is 'the truth' to which end there is no one technique. Actors are encouraged to find their own tools and to draw from elements of different practices to discover a technique that works best for them as individuals.

I studied the methods of Constantin Stanislavski for acting with Sergei Pomerov of the Moscow Circus Theater. I am classically trained as well.

My basic approach to classical work focuses primarily on the connection of the breath with the feeling on the word.

Your own unique emotional life is allowed to come through the text and you are able to fully embody the role.

Nicholas is a fantastic and patient teacher who is skilled at helping actors with nonverbal communication. He helped me organize my monologues into beats and we worked on transitions and changes of intention. After classes with Nicholas, I confidently made my debut on stage.

I was always afraid I couldn't learn Shakespeare, but Nicholas explained the intent on the word, the intent on the line. Soon, I was so caught up in the meaning of the lines and the story I was telling in that moment that I was able to engage in the role, smoothly, without worrying that I was performing Shakespeare. He broke it down so I could understand it, and then feel confident doing it. Highly recommend!

Nicholas knows Shakespeare and classical work. He really works with the text and helps an actor really understand the emotions in the scene, through the text. I've gotten so much out of his teaching and so have many of my friends. If you have an audition or play coming up, he's the one to get you ready for it! My friend nailed his audition, got the gig, all through his work with Nicholas. I've learned so much as an actor from Nicholas.

Edward is friendly, outgoing and patient. He assisted me in preparing monologues and with various acting work, including scenes and exercises. Definitely helped me over come nerves/fears. Would recommend for anyone seeking lessons in acting!

Julia was my college audition coach to get into acting school, and I am confident that she is the reason I got into the schools I did. I met with her on Skype once a week for about a year/year and half. She coached me on all of my monologues and even gave me acting coaching on songs. She helped me find almost all of my monologues, and was particularly helpful in coaching me on scansion and Shakespeare! Not only did she do all of this, but going through the college audition process herself and being trained at Juilliard, she prepared me for what to expect before I went in to my first audition. She is an absolutely wonderful teacher and would highly recommend her to anyone going through this experience. I am now a Sophomore Acting Major at Syracuse University which was ranked the number 8 acting school in the world this year. I also got into drama schools in Europe. Thank you Julia!! <3

I am a working professional actor in NYC, have been for years. Mostly theater, but I want to do more television. Julia coached me on my audition for a one-day guest star role on The Good Wife, and I booked the job! She is fantastic--very practical and knowledgable, but also very affirming and enthusiastic. My career as an actor, singer and director spans more than 20 years. At the young age of 14, as part of a production of Big River at the Orpheum Theatre in Memphis, I realized that theatre was the path for me. I later earned my B.A. in Theatre with a minor in vocal music from Lambuth University where I led casts in such shows as The Fantasticks, The Diviners, and Amadeus. I also discovered my knack and love for directing, taking on children's theatre and mounting a fantastic main stage production of Terra Nova.

 My path took me to Los Angeles, where I continued my acting career in theatre, film and TV. Some of my favorites include Freddie the American in Chess, The Fool in King Lear, Arturo Ui in Brecht's The Resistible Rise of Arturo Ui, and Puck in A Midsummer Night's Dream performed both in L.A. and Frankfurt, Germany. As a director,
I successfully brought to life such wonderful scripts as A Piece of my Heart, In the Heart of America and the controversial Marat/Sade. 

Within a few months of arriving to New York, I was cast as the Emcee U/S in a national tour of the musical Cabaret. Soon after my return, I booked the two-person Off-Broadway hit comedy Channeling Kevin Spacey in which I played 15 different characters and ran for a solid two years!
