I had the best time taking voice lessons with Josh! I always felt like he was able to meet me where I was and allow me to learn at the pace that made sense for me, while also pushing me a bit where it made sense. I was able to grow as a vocalist without even really realizing it, because I was having so much fun!

Josh has been teaching our son (14 years old) piano and voice for over a year. He is an exceptional teacher and musician. Our son is really into musical theater and pop music. Josh has done an amazing job getting him playing and singing the music he loves quickly and successfully. He incorporates vocal and piano technique, music theory, and style into the context of pieces of music our son is motivated to learn, practice, and perform. Josh is incredibly smart and personable. He relates well to our son and has built a strong, trusting teacher-student relationship with him. We have also hired Josh to perform at family events for us. He was incredibly talented and professional. We cannot recommend Josh highly enough. He is fantastic!

Saturday is one of the most phenomenal instructors I’ve ever had! They really worked with me to understand where I was struggling and found a way to practice that worked for me! They are always so patient and ready to teach. I truly feel like I have improved so much since I started lessons with them!
Josh
I've thoroughly enjoyed my lessons with Saturday so far! As a classically trained singer who has spent all of the quarantine away from choral ensembles and a capella groups, it was absolutely refreshing to be able to dive into a different aspect of music (in my case, broadway singing) while touching up on the music theory aspects of the genre itself. I've been pleasantly surprised by the way that Saturday has been able to relate the more modern styles of singing to what I am already comfortable with while keeping the mood of the lessons fun yet efficient. It's definitely been worth my time and I'm excited to continue learning with them.

I'm a very flexible teacher. Whatever you feel that you need to work on, we will work on. I've been blessed to beginning my musical journey in my hometown of New Orleans, Louisiana. From there, I've attended The Juilliard School and earned 3 GRAMMY nominations from my work with various artists. Music theory is the mathematics behind the art. It connects math to what we hear, see and feel in music. Understanding theory can help you accentuate the piece you are working on, improve your improvisational skills, and connect you to the music on a deeper level. This can be the most difficult part about learning music. But have no fear!! I love to make sense out of the non-sense! We can add theory practices to your instrumental lesson or take them separately.

About Mary

I started playing saxophone in 1994. It was an immediate passion! As the years went on my thirst for music grew and I picked up more instruments. I earned my Bachelor’s of Arts in Music from UW-Milwaukee in 2006. I continued to study privately on Saxophone with Curt Hanrahan and on Accordion with

"It has been a few years since our daughter, Michaela, took piano and music theory classes from Howard Richman. However, hardly a day goes by when she is not using something that she has learned from him. Whether she is writing a song, composing music, producing a track, playing the piano, singing, rehearsing, performing, etc…it always involves some aspect of her lessons with Howard. She is always referencing material from her classes with him. The enjoyment and confidence that Howard instills in his students, through his methods of teaching, truly must last a lifetime. Going to Howard was one of the best decisions that we have made regarding Michaela's career. In fact, as it turns out, it was a life changing experience for her. Needless to say, we have the very highest recommendation for Howard Richman."

"I am a good pianist but I really wanted to work on music theory and analysis. I chose Aaron because I wanted to know more about what I was playing. Aaron has really provided me with profound insight on multiple levels into the music I am working on, such that my performances have gained entirely new meanings. I have been working on Shostakovich's Piano Concerto no. 2 and he has really helped me to understand the harmonies in the second movement. Aaron has a warm, inviting personality and is a delight to take lessons from. I highly recommend this teacher."

Music Student Face-Off: Memorizers vs. Readers | Which is Better?

As you learn songs and work through your music books, do you memorize the notes? Or do you read along every time you play? In this post, music teacher Vanessa G. discusses the pros and cons to the approaches...   Imagine your teacher gives you a piece of music to study. What's your process? Do you listen to a recording, memorizing the melody and the stylistic aspects before you begin, and then as you play? Or would you sit down and sight read the notes, and perfect it from that star …

How to Change the Key of a Song With and Without a Computer

What Does it Mean to Change a Key? To change a song’s “key” means to shift the whole musical system to a higher or lower position. This process is called “transposition.” Performers often need transpose a song to better fit their voices. That way, a performer with a naturally lower singing voice (like myself) will be able to more comfortably sing a song that was originally written for someone with a naturally higher voice. Or vice versa.  For singers, transposition feels fairly …

Why You Should Learn (At Least a Little) Music Theory

One of the most common weaknesses for amateur musicians is a lack of music theory knowledge. Many people assume that learning theory is difficult (it isn’t) that it has no practical purpose (it does), or even that it will actively make them worse at making music (quite the opposite). I’m here to convince you that learning a little about how music works is one of the most important skills you can develop and should absolutely be part of your daily practice routine. Here are five reasons w …
