I've been teaching piano, cello, voice and theory in Los Angeles for over thirty years, helping students develop their particular interests in music and to encourage them to reach their personal goals. I love the classics and many of my students want to play popular music, contemporary sounds and jazz and that is fine too. I received my BA in music at UCLA and a Master's at Cal State Northridge. I conduct vocal and bell choirs, run a concert series, play chamber music, sing in a band and teach in the Community College District in addition to running my private studio.

*** Lesson Details ***
My students work on technical skills such as playing scales and chords at the beginning of each lesson since these are the building blocks of the music we wish to play. I expect students to practice but I understand that life is complicated and som
e days that may mean you only have ten minutes. I try to explain that a little bit every day will help you become a better player rather than working for two hours the day before a lesson. I have lots of good books that I assign that have fun materials with strong melodies. I design everyone's program according to their desires. After a half year, a beginning piano student might expect to be able to play the three essential chords ( the ones that harmonize so many songs) while playing the melody in the other hand. Cellists can expect to be able to play at least four scales, some in two octaves, and understand the notes in the first position within six months.

I am 43 years old and was scared to take on such a difficult instrument but I really wanted to learn how to play the beautiful cello. I had my first lesson and am very happy with Claire. She is friendly, accommodating, patient, and explains her lesson in a clear and easy manner (as easy as you can get with the cello). I had a lot of questions and she was very open in answering all of them. Although I am still at the very very beginnings of my journey, I am very excited to continue with the cello lessons, thanks to Claire.

The first lesson was excellent. I completed my first private cello lesson since playing about 44 years ago. It was wonderful. The teacher is very organized and very nice. I thought maybe the lesson would be a lesson of remembering what I had forgotten from so long ago, but I actually learned new things. I'm excited to attend the next lesson.

Hello there! My name is Fernando, and I bring lots of profession playing and teaching experience to the table. I am an active musician in several local bands of various styles and genres, including jazz bands, Latin jazz bands, sax quartets, church groups, and musicals. I have played across southern California, several other states including Nevada (Reno Jazz Festival), Portugal, and Mexico.

I have a Bachelor of Arts degree in Music Education, from CSUF. I also hold a valid California Teaching Credential, which I completed through CSUF. I also hold an Associate of Arts degree in Music from Fullerton College. I am also currently working on my Master's Degree in Music Conducting.

I am the Instrumental and Choral Music Teacher at Buena Park Jr. High School, in the city of Buena Park, where I teach band, orchestra, percussion
, and choir.

I have also taught woodwinds for various high schools across southern California, as well as a marching/visual coach for marching bands.

I front and lead my own Christian Contemporary Band. We've recorded two albums, of which I have composed the original music/lyrics, and produced both albums. We are currently working on our third album.

I can teach everything from jazz, to classical, rock, blues, Latin genres (salsa, merengue, bolero, mambo, etc.), and even contemporary Christian music in both English and Spanish.

I mix all of these experiences and knowledge into a big melting pot, and apply it very efficiently and wisely so that my students can positively benefit from a wonderful and exciting real-world musical journey!

*** Lesson Details ***
I base my lessons around the student's needs for musical growth, and their own likes and dislikes. If there is something specific that the student wants to learn, as far as a style/genre or piece of music, I foster that and I help encourage musical growth and enjoyment around that.
I am constantly encouraging my students to listen to as much music as possible, or better yet, to watch and listen to as much live music as possible. I strongly believe that this nurtures musical growth and serves as a role model.
I am very patient and laid back, but I do expect the student to have fun while staying constant with individual practice. There is no substitution for perseverance, consistency, and hard work, but it doesn't mean that we will not have fun while we make music!

*** Studio Equipment ***
An upright Yamaha acoustic piano is available, along with a Korg and Kurzweil digital keyboards, music stands, computer music software for studying repertoire (music), a large collection/library of books containing scales, exercises, music, etc. I also can make copies or print something for you if necessary. A sound system is available for listening to something is necessary. Flute, saxophone, and clarinet students must provide their own instrument, but I can point you in the right direction in terms of acquiring an instrument either for purchase or rental from a local music retail store.

*** Travel Equipment ***
Students must provide their own instrument, except piano if student comes to my home for lessons. Student must also provide books (as assigned), and metronome for practicing at home. I can carry with me things such as: saxophone, clarinet, flute, a portable music stand, metronome/tunes, pencil, paper, and any other book(s) or materials as needed.

I am currently the piano and guitar teacher at Oakwood Academy Schools of Long Beach. I have a BA in Music Education with an emphasis in voice. I've been teaching for 16 years in classroom and one-on-one settings. Other places where I have taught are: Calvary Chapel Downey School, Dexter Music Academy, the Youth Cultural Arts Foundation of Bellflower, and ABC Unified School District. I've been complimented on my ability to teach in a way that makes my students learn very quickly. I was trained in the classical and pop/rock genres. I've toured with choirs throughout China, and the United States (including Carnegie Hall), and I have also toured with rock bands in Spain, Mexico, Central America, Peru, and throughout the U.S.A.

I've worked with various vocal coaches including Maxayn Lewis (Who has worked with Celine Dion and Britney
Spears), and I am currently the lead singer (also playing guitar & piano) in the alternative rock band "Stripe Coats". In August of 2009, this band released a 5-song EP and after a month we landed a record deal with label Tate Music Group. In August 3rd of 2010, Stripe Coats released their 11-song album under the band name Kaden. This album features artists such as guitarist Michael Thompson (played for Michael Jackson, Christina Aguilera), and drummer John Robinson (played for Quincy Jones, Elton John). The album also contains three songs that were recorded and produced by Producer Wyn Davis (producer of No Doubt, Sublime). Wyn Davis said, "Stripe Coats is one of the most promising new bands to come through Total Access [Studios] in a long time.  After doing records and watching young bands enter and exit the studio for over 30 years, it is STILL very exciting to work with a band that brings so much love, passion, and skill to what they do."

Stripe Coats™' songs are on rotation on Live 365 Internet Radio, and TMG Internet Radio. Our songs have also been featured on Alcoa Tennessee'™s Love 89.1 Radio and on hundreds of other radio stations, such as Refuge, CSN, and WCTL.

I divide my class into 4 parts: 1. Scales/Chords/Arpeggios/Warm-ups 2. Sight-Reading 3. Theory 4. Improvisation. Depending on the instrument of your choice, and also what your specific goals are, each of these parts are customized. You will learn quickly.

A weighted 88 keyboard is used. Free parking on street and lot.

It is my experience that no matter what kind of music you end up playing a solid classical piano background is invaluable. I was privately trained in classical piano from the ages 5 - 17 in Los Angeles, California. My teachers were Mary Brady, Mae Gilbert Reese and Jeane Weiss. I graduated from Harvard High School and then graduated from UCLA with BA in art. I am a Los Angeles based artist and composer. Recently I was nominated Best Music Director of the year by the L.A. Weekly for my work on 'Head the Musical' at the Met Theater Los Angeles in 2010. I am currently mounting an opera I wrote at the Met Theater. I have been teaching private piano lessons to students ages 8 to adult for the last six years.

My lessons focus on reading, technique and basic music theory. I always start my lessons with scales and exercises. This develops good technique and primes the student for music theory. Stop wasting your time - take Robert.

I only had the pleasure of taking piano lessons with Robert for two months since I got into Harvard and had to move to the East Coast, but I can confidently attest that he is a phenomenal teacher. To begin with, Robert brings to the table not only his classical training but also an open, creative, out-of-the-box approach. He is extremely knowledgeable and seasons lessons with fantastic facts about composers and pieces which makes everything a lot more interesting and memorable. lessons are versatile and designed to develop several key skills simultaneously. I never really played the piano before but after only two months with Robert I could read notes, develop my technique and actually play two beautiful pieces! If you are looking for a well-rounded, brilliant, cool teacher - search no more.

The Vocal Artist

A rare 'natural' tenor, Patrick's range and versatility are evidenced throughout his work. From Bach Cantatas to Broadway tunes, he's even dared to sing Denver, bringing audiences to tears with his own rendition of Annie's Song. He is a torch song tenor, a la Rondstadt's 'Round Midnight but with the power and passion of Pavarotti.

Like most classically-trained tenors, Patrick can list many of the master works among his repertoire. Starting with Michigan Opera Theatre's Opera-in-Residence program, he performed in Madame Butterfly, Die Fledermaus and The Mikado and others. In Detroit & Windsor Ontario, he performed Bach, Schubert, Handel, Dubois, Mozart and Dvorak. While Patrick's early career focused on classical sacred performances, his real passion is to re-create traditional music in new ways. He recorded his
first two albums with composer Yves Vincent of San Diego, California in genre-stretching new-age/classical style.

After relocating to Tucson, Arizona, as music director for his church, he encouraged a variety of styles and genres to be used by the musicians and choirs of each of five weekend Masses.
Later, in Illinois, he directed another 60 voice parish choir that frequently performed with orchestras from Illinois State & Wesleyan Universities. His voice students in all these locations have been encouraged to explore and develop their own unique expression of their favorite music, while building on a solid foundation of technique, vocal strength and musicianship.

Now that Patrick has relocated one more time to Los Angeles, CA, he is working on a 3rd and 4th CD and once again accepting students. He enjoys the opportunity to expose young & older talent to the power and passion of classical music while also helping them create ways to make it new and exciting by reinterpreting it with their own favorite genres.

Lessons

Patrick's passion for teaching comes from his philosophy of music:
"Music is humanity's most evolved form of expression and communication. Music includes language, our physical senses, and our sense of meaning. With music, ordinary language is ultimately transcended. Words communicate from mind to mind; music communicates to the depth of the soul."

Patrick teaches and encourages young beginners as well as coaching and challenging seasoned professionals. He has even taught a hearing-impaired student to use physical sensation rather than sound to sing on pitch! He focuses on fundamentals of breath, technique and strength to help singers take care of their irreplaceable instrument. (Patrick's own vocal coach, Edward Kingins, continues to perform and move audiences in Detroit well in to his 70s!) Along with helping students build a strong foundation, he nurtures a love and commitment to music by working with students in the style and genre they enjoy most, from rock to pop, jazz or country.

Patrick also has unique insight into the entertainment industry, both in Los Angeles and across the country. Over the years, he has been associated with and close friends with musicians and actors such as John Denver and Richard Hatch as well as sought-after speakers Tom Crum and W Mitchell. Since locating to L.A., he has worked in independent movies with Damian Chapa and David Carradine as an actor and production assistant and coordinator. This experience, coupled with his own success on stage and as a recording artist helps him guide and advise serious young talent to maneuver the crazy environment of Hollywood and avoid the scams and pitfalls of the entertainment industry.

Beginning Lesson Outline

My Basic lesson outline is to determine where we are starting with each student and custom make lessons designed to fit the needs for that student. We will also work on meditation and visualization techniques for performance. The idea is for you to feel the words and sing with passion or so your audience believes your song.

Unlike other instruments, your voice cannot be replaced if it is damaged. I take the time needed through each step of the process so your voice is strengthened and developed properly. It is up to the student to practice and apply what is learned and build a trained, strong instrument that will be useable for your whole life.

You will learn:

Proper breathing techniques and practice.
Properly warming up the voice.
Working on music theory (reading music, etc.)
Ear training and pitch.
Expression, phrasing and performing.
Applying techniques learned to music suitable for student's capabilities.
Learning to have fun and enjoy the music experience.
Confidence and self-esteem

Depending on student's progress, specific lesson components above will be emphasized so that the student's goals will be achieved.

I needed to practice a solo for my Easter Vigil Psalm performance, and he helped me take care of my instrument, taught me great exercises, and gave me good advice about my career. He is a very nice instructor. He will help you grow as a singer and performer, and you always learn something new everyday with him...I highly recommend him to everyone because he really knows music theory.

About Ariel
ARIEL MIZUMOTO was born and raised in sunny southern California where she relished the musical arts playing the piano and cello throughout her childhood. However, not until an unexpected chance “run-into,” and becoming friends with the legendary pianist, Mr. Van Cliburn, did she become inspired to commit and dedicate her life to a career in classical piano and music education. In 2016, under the tutelage of Professor Norman Krieger, Ariel graduated from the University of Southern California, Thornton School of Music graduating with honors with a master’s degree in piano performance, and was inducted into the Pi Kappa Lambda National Honor Society for music.

During Ariel’s young musical career, she has had to opportunity to perform in many renown local venues, including the Hollywood Ford Amphitheater, the Orange County Performing Art
s Center Segerstrom Hall, Irvine Barclay Theater, and in Pasadena playing two seasons with Pasadena Pops Orchestra. She has also contributed to various charities playing for benefit concerts such as for childhood cancer survivors at the Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles’ “Celebrate Life with Hope” at the Paramount Motion Picture Studios, the Anya Foundation promoting childhood safety, and the Japan Earthquake and Tsunami Relief benefit concert, to name a few.

Being a dual talent in both the piano and cello, Ariel has enjoyed international travel in solo piano, and chamber music as a pianist and cellist. Some of these include piano performance in China, Poland, and in various venues in Japan. As a chamber musician, she has toured internationally performing both piano or cello in countries including Germany, Austria, Russia, Estonia, and Finland.

Ariel has had film experience being featured as a musician for a major Paramount Studio’s motion picture film, as well as being part of a documentary film on the American composer, Benjamin Lees, called “The Musical Life of Benjamin Lees” by Joel Hochberg. During the premier of this documentary, Ariel was invited to perform for Mr. Lees as a VIP guest for the premier’s after-party.

Having received top recognition in a variety of competitions and scholarships, Ariel has given many performances both solo and with orchestral including twice by the Los Angeles Doctors Symphony under the baton of Dr. Ivan Shulman.

Ariel’s magnetic personality attracting the admiration of many children has been a huge asset in her teaching experience. From organizing and conducting summer music camps, to individual private instruction, Ariel has an effective communication ability making learning music a positive experience for both the students and their parents. Ariel is skilled at coaching collaborative groups, teaching music theory, music history, ear training, and solfege. Her students have scored top marks in both the Certificate of Merit and the Royal Conservatory of Music exam programs, and in AP music theory examinations.

“Cooking good food on a weekend evening and sight-reading chamber music for hours and hours with friends is my definition of a great time!” says Ariel when asked how she likes to spend her free time. My main focus area is 20th and 21st-century music, But I teach a wide spectrum of music theoretical subjects from early Renaissance to contemporary music as well.
My students are generally music major college and university students who need a deeper understanding of theoretical and analytical subjects such as form, harmony, counterpoint, and analysis. I also teach people with no musical background who are passionate about understanding music in order to be better active listeners.

Composer, language enthusiast, and teacher currently based in Los Angeles and Salzburg; studying music composition and Electronic music at Mozarteum University in Salzburg. My works include instrumental/vocal concert-music, music theater, live electronics, fixed media, installations, etc. My compositions and installations are regularly are regularly performed and exhibited at contemporary music festival and museums throughout the world.
I teach subjects such as Piano, Keyboard skills, harmony, counterpoint, instrumentation and orchestration, computer-assisted composition, musical analysis, and musical form.
I help students prepare for entrance and final exams at universities and colleges. I also teach people with passion and interest in understanding music.

I am currently residing in Los Angeles, however, I do visit Europe for my co
ncerts, festivals, masterclasses, and workshops regularly. So I hope you do not mind skipping a week or two In November and January.

Shahriyar is very kind and responsible. He makes the lessons so much fun and interesting, at the same time he is serious and demanding.We analyse pieces in class and we work on different ways of interpreting music. I also learn a lot about music history and music theory.

Over his career as a composer, Anthony has developed a voice that focuses on both intricate systems and improvisatory practices.
