We're gonna play some grooves and HAVE FUN! I'm a professional musician and have been a performing bassist for over 20 years, and I hope to pass along some of my knowledge and expertise to you. I customize your lessons to your needs and what you want to do with your ability to play bass. I can prepare you for any genre as I include fundamentals (for example, scales and arpeggios) in your practice. I use these books for reference and/or lesson work:
- Hal Leonard's Bass Method-Books 1, 2 & 3 (Ed Friedland)
- Mel Bay's Deluxe Jazz & Rock Bass Method (Vincent Bredice)
I can help you learn how to play with a pick, how to "slap & pluck," how to sing and play simultaneously, and even how to sightread.

About Robert

Hey there! I've been performing music for as long as I can remember, and performing professionally for over 30 years. I have formal training and 12 years of teaching experience. I teach with positivity, patience, and perseverance and help you express the music in you! *** Lesson Details ***

Bass guitar students start with five subjects.

1) Technique is concerned with the development of the physical mechanics involved in playing the instrument.

2) Scales are part of the basic vocabulary and building blocks of the musical language.

3) Intervals are also basic vocabulary of the musical language and progress into chords, and yes, bass players think and play chords.

4) Note reading is not required for every student. It really depends on the student's goals. However, I strongly encourage learning to read musical notation, (more than tablature). Literacy in reading music is analogous to literacy in reading in our English language. Can you imagine how much smaller our world would be if we couldn't read?

5) Songs utilize the skills and concepts of all the previously mentioned subjects and are the goal of studying music. And by the way, they are really fun to play, especially when interacting with other musicians or performing for an audience.

These five ...

I really like to cater to what each individual student wants to learn. I prefer focusing on learning songs in addition to doing "bookwork", especially initially. I feel like its my job as a teacher to first make music fun first, and then introduce and refine concepts about technique, theory, etc. in a way that works for each unique student. I really try to encourage a student's curiosity about music. I like getting outside of the box; talking about for instance, the physics of sound, or the history of composition during a lesson. I am a huge theory nerd, and I really try to introduce those concepts in a way that is both easy to grasp and more practical than what you might take away from the typical 8am college course. I really try and go where the student wants to, whether that be guiding them thru some songwriting or learning a classic Richie Blackmore solo.

About Timothy

I have been teaching for over 15 years. I live for music, and love the opportunity to share that joy with others. I've toured all across the US and Europe, both as a guitarist and a sound engineer. Our 9 year old son has been getting guitar lessons from Tim for the last 2 years and we couldn’t be happier. Tim was very patient with him as a beginner and kept it simple until he learned the basics. He does a great job of relating to the kids and making it fun for them while educating them on technique through their progression. Our son really looks forward to going to lessons and can’t thank Tim enough for his instruction and mentorship to our little Rockstar!

Love Tim. He teaches what the student is ready to learn which has kept me interested in guitar lessons for the past 2 years. No workbooks. He encourages me to try any new song I want. Sometime I ask for a lesson in music theory, song writing, or a little piano. He’s just a cool guy and very relatable.

I've played bass for over 30 years in the studio and touring all over the US, Mexico, and Central America. Jim
I have been taking guitar lessons with Nick Russo since February 2018. In my opinion, Nick Russo is a terrific musician and an outstanding teacher. He is an active gigging musician with an encyclopedic knowledge of music theory and music history and is well-versed in various types of music including, but not limited to classical, jazz, metal, folk, world music, etc., etc. Nick comes from a musical family and is very passionate about music, and this comes accross loud and clear in his lessons. He lives and breathes music.

I came to Nick after taking lessons for several years with another teacher. I liked this teacher very much, and the lessons only ended because the teacher moved to another geographic location. Although I did like this teacher, the lessons were starting to get stale and repetitious. When I started working with Nick that feeling was turned around. Lessons with Nick are very stimulating and interesting. Although Nick knows sight reading and theory well, he places a great emphasis on aural (ear) training. I have worked with him learning intervals, scales and songs, using my ears instead of my head. It’s a little hard to explain, but it’s a very organic kind of way to learn music. You learn the instrument more intuitively and I have had a number of’ “aha” moments when some pattern or connection or aspect of theory makes sense in a deep way. In the time that I’ve worked with Nick, my knowledge of the fretboard, and my ability to figure things out by ear has improved tremendously although I still have a long way to go.

Nick is also an incredibly kind and compassionate person, and he has shown a great deal of patience when working with me. If I don’t understand something he will try to break it down or present it in such a way that it finally makes sense to me. He has also worked a lot with me on my technique, and has tried to help me play more efficiently and ergonomically. Earlier in my guitar playing career, I developed

tendonitis in my left hand from playing. In addition, I have chronic lower back problems. Nick has made numerous helpful suggestions so that I don’t exacerbate these problems or injure myself again. One suggestion that was particularly helpful was to use a bass guitar strap for my electric guitar. Because the bass strap is much wider than a regular guitar strap, the weight is more evenly distributed across my back, resulting in less back strain.

I began my lessons with Nick face-to-face, but this changed to video due to the coronavirus pandemic. We utilize Skype and it seems to work pretty well, although there’s no substitute for meeting in person. Nick seems very adept at working in this modality. For example, he will have me position the camera so he can see how I am playing something. He will also provide close-ups of his own fingering to show me how he is playing something. In addition, Nick sends his students notes regarding the most salient points of each session. This is something he did even prior to the pandemic. Nick allows me to audio tape the sessions, and when I am able to go through the tape I gain an even deeper understanding of whatever was covered.

In short I feel that Nick is great person and a terrific teacher and that I was very lucky to have found him. I would recommend him to anyone with no reservation.
Brian
He is fanstastic! A very patient teacher who was always willing to go the extra step to help me learn and improve. I miss our lessons. However I still follow much of the advice and tricks he taught me!
J.E.P.
My son, who is 10 and has been playing guitar for two years, has been taking Nick’s band class for the last 9 months and we are very happy with it. Nick is not only a great musician, but as a father himself knows well how to teach kids and make them engage in whatever they are playing.

He has taught my son not only how to play with well with other musicians, but also how to find his “voice” within a band both in the rhythmic and solo sections of the songs.

He was accommodating when we had to reschedule a class due to personal reasons, and is always willing to make the class a little bit longer if necessary to finish what they were practicing.

When the Covid-19 pandemic forced us to have the lessons remotely, he started to use ZOOM and, while things remotely cannot be the same, he did a great job at making sure that they stayed as close to true form as possible.

"At 61 years old I wanted a challenge, and that was to learn how to play the bass guitar. Having had absolutely no previous training, and being quite terrified, James gave me the confidence that this was possible to achieve.

His knowledge to teach a simple approach in the theory of music, his patience, and ability to instruct in a way that makes sense, made learning exciting for me.

Highly recommend him to anyone who is interested in going beyond what they think they're capable of in a caring one on one environment. :)"

"I am very particular about where I receive my education/instructions. I'm extremely particular about educators/instructors. Be it martial-arts, college institutions, or bass playing. I performed an extensive search for a bass instructor, I am a beginner and I wish to become one of the best. Taking this seriously, I decided to go with Ray upon reading his credentials - I did NOT go wrong by doing so! He is very knowledgeable and he exudes attention to detail from his military experience - that's important to me since I am military. I am confident that I will be held to a high standard, not being allowed to slide by for the sake of time and money - but also having fun and being motivated to progress. I would not consider another instructor. When I am close to the advanced level, I will be considered one of the best bass players because of his teaching. Trust me, if I was not satisfied, I WOULD SAY SO!!!!"
