Kathryn is an amazing teacher! I've been working with her for nearly a year now. At first I was hesitant doing classes online, but I don't regret taking the leap. I've definitely improved my acting skills in the months we've been working together; she gives great feedback and really cares about her students, not ONLY in the way of their acting skills. Jan is a fun and dynamic instructor whose patience and attention to the needs of her students has been instrumental in helping my daughter enjoy and thrive in her voice and piano lessons. While some instructors, in our experience, have been excellent musicians but poor teachers, Jan's style and flexibility make her an ideal person for passing on her knowledge to students, so that they in turn develop their own musical talents and shine. Learn to let your character shine on stage or screen! Through improvisation, script analysis and the study of monologue materials, students are introduced to the fundamentals of performance. Special emphasis is placed on exploration of characterization, motivation, and transition. Elements of Alexander Technique will be introduced to help students gain a kinesthetic awareness of self.

Students are able to tailor their lessons to their chosen acting field. If stage acting is the area of study, lessons will focus on proper stage presence, projection, and elements of theatrical acting. If film acting is the area of focus, students will learn to manage micro expressions, the importance of minute changes in body and posture, and hone the ability to "do it exactly the same", and essential skill for film actors.

Alexis attended college at the University of Delaware and graduated cum laude with a double major in Music Performance: Voice and Music Education: Choral/Vocal. Alexis teaches proper singing technique and support through the Bel Canto philosophy of vocal production, and specializes in Classical, Opera, Musical Theater, and Jazz singing styles. Sight singing skill work is also offered and will cover basic music theory in addition to solfege music reading techniques. Alexis offers audition preparation services such as audio recording and transposition for her current voice studio students, for an additional fee.

She is a two time recipient of the Mario Lanza Award, and holds a B.M. degree in opera from the Philadelphia College of Performing Arts. Having spent a lifetime on the stage in many roles, many capacities, I have accumulated a vast amount of knowledge pertaining to all facets of performing; be it theater, television, film. While not subscribing to one particular "method", I stress "reacting, not acting", and believability of performance. All ages and experience levels have benefited from my approach. Whether a student is an aspiring actor, or a working actor sharpening their skills or prepping for an audition, I provide a solid foundation and practical, applicable knowledge and guidance.

About Glenn
I have been active in the entertainment industry since the age of 12, when I gave my first professional performance. Prior to that I was already being introduced to music with years of guitar, and then vocal instruction. I do not remember a time of my life when I was not singing somewhere; in the house, in the yard, in the classroom. That is perhaps why I identify so well with the young people who gather so much enjoyment from "just singing" at every opportunity. I studied professionally for over 10 years with renown soprano and voice teacher Sylvia Jensen, who was instrumental in the enhancement of my vocal knowledge and technique. She is now the Director of Education for the Miss Ohio pageants of the Miss America competitions, elevating many young ladies to the national spotlight. At age 14, I auditioned for, and was added to cast of a
network television variety program, "The Gene Carroll Show", that was a television institution for over 30 years in the Midwest. I was a featured performer on that program for over 7 years, all the while perfecting the art of "playing to a camera." This experience was invaluable, and the knowledge I gathered is now included in my curriculum. I also began performing a solo act in the nightclub circuit at the age of 15, performing up and down the "north coast" from Cleveland, OH, (my home), to Erie. PA. At a very young age, I learned the difficult art of choosing musical material and pacing a show; also adapting to performing under a myriad of conditions with a vast array of musical accompaniment. After graduating college with a degree in Business Administration and Marketing, I assembled my own band, and took to the road. That experience eventually brought the act to Las Vegas in 1982. Over the years my show has been a staple in major casino cabarets in Las Vegas, and all over Nevada. Since my first engagement at The Landmark Hotel in the early 1980's, I have literally been up and down the famed Las Vegas Strip many times over. The Desert Inn, The Dunes, The Stardust, The Maxim, The Tropicana, New York New York, Mandalay Bay, MGM, Bally's, The Flamingo, The Imperial Palace, The Four Queens, The Golden Nugget, The Fremont, The Venetian, The Palazzo, and a three year engagement at The Riviera. My show is truly comprised of musical variety; classics, show tunes, jazz, rock, blues, r&b, country. Even a presentation of "Music of the Night" from Phantom of the Opera, that I perform in full costume. It is this ability to successfully deliver an extensive repertoire that I am enthusiastic about passing along to the next generation of entertainers.

I have been truly blessed in my career to have experienced so many highlights; too many to document. From winning an understudy roll in the Broadway Musical "Platinum" starring Hollywood actress Alexis Smith, to performing our National Anthem at events ranging from Major League Baseball to ESPN Boxing to receptions for major dignitaries, to recording 7 albums and a full-length video, to being asked to perform for Mr. Frank Sinatra at the Frank Sinatra Celebrity Golf Tournament, I have lived a full life on stage, learning and absorbing every bit of knowledge gathered along the way.
Now it is my desire to escalate my status as an educator to a more "one on one" experience; availing myself the opportunity to pass along that wealth of knowledge to individual students who aspire to enjoy the entertainment profession as I have, providing them with the skills needed to successfully compete. Or, should it be their choice not to pursue entertainment as a vocation, to gain a working understanding of all facets of their instrument so as to gain a better appreciation of music. Whatever the goal of the student, I feel that I am equipped to provide them with the tools needed to achieve that goal.

*** Lesson Details ***
Content of Sessions

Generally, the first 10-15 minutes of each lesson will be focused on vocal warm up and exercise. (For guitar students, we will review the previous
week's assignment). For Vocal Students, it is understood that the voice mechanism is made up of muscles, and as an athlete prepares for a sporting event, a singer must prepare to vocalize. It is at this time in our lesson when the student will develop good habits of voice maintenance, which will serve them well throughout their careers. The proper care and preservation of the vocal unit cannot be stressed enough, especially for pubescent and pre-pubescent students. Vocal chords in a developmental stage are most susceptible to damage, and because they are particularly sensitive, they must be handled with care. Our warm up regimen is designed to strengthen as well as preserve the singing voice.

I am not an advocate of getting too involved and "bogged down" in the technical aspects of singing, especially with the young students, and
especially early in our program. This is not to say that breath control, tonality, pitch, etc. are not vital to good singing, because these workings are ESSENTIAL, and their application will certainly be incorporated into our studies. Some instructors, on occasion, have a tendency to lose sight of the fact that much to do with singing happens "naturally", and too much focus on the "technical" can actually be inhibiting. This can alter a beautiful, natural tone into one that is unnatural and contrived.

I adhere to the philosophy that above all else, SINGERS WANT TO SING SONGS, and musicians-in-training want to play music. That is our focus, and all of our training is conceived with that objective in mind. All the technical knowledge and coaching serves no purpose without practical application. It is my belief that the most significant progress occurs when a vocalist is singing a song.

Nearly every element of instruction can be utilized in the performance of one song. This is why the majority of our session time will be spent "in song". For the very young student, we will concentrate our efforts with the students choices of favorite and familiar songs. The older students will undoubtedly have favorite songs, styles and artists. Special attention will be paid to the genre most enjoyed by the student, but diversity will be emphasized as well, and a variety of genres will be unpacked and explored. I believe that whatever a student's musical goals and aspirations, it is in their best interest to gain knowledge and insight in all facets of music, singing, and performance.

The most vital pre-requisite for any student is their enthusiasm. My ambition will be to harness that enthusiasm and channel it productively through stimulating instruction. Our sessions will be informative and educational, but always predicated upon "having fun with music".

I am proud to feature a curriculum that emphasizes the entertainment aspect of singing as well as the technical; created to benefit all ages and experience levels, from beginner to seasoned professional. After just weeks of my "Triple Threat Training" a student will begin to see astounding results: vocally, musically, and in the art of performance. I am excited to share my knowledge with you. Let's get started!

*** Studio Equipment ***
My studio is equipped with a full vocal sound system with microphones that I utilize to teach the valuable art of mic technique. Young students enjoy using the mics and hearing themselves sing and perform. Since our lessons are predicated on enjoying the art of singing, this opportunity has proven invaluable. For the advanced performer, studying all aspects of amplification and what a singer should know about their stage sound is a part of our educational curriculum. My studio is furnished with the equipment that is essential to mastering that knowledge.
Since the practical aspect of my course is based on singing songs, I provide all the latest technology required to allow my students the opportunity to sing the songs of their choosing, with and without the lead vocal tracks. I feel that when students are singing their favorite songs, it offers me the greatest teaching opportunities. I make certain the every musical genre can be represented, and feel I have the knowledge and ability to guide the student is whatever their musical tastes. My studio is also equipped with piano (for vocal exercises), and guitars, which gives me opportunity to accompany my students when the musical moment is appropriate. Glenn is AMAZING! He did much more than just prep my acting & singing for my audition. He gave me tips to help be prepared for the unforeseen during the audition and instilled confidence in my performance. He is a great teacher and I highly recommend him! Can’t wait to continue to learn from him!!

Glenn is a fantastic instructor. I was a beginner to acting, but I've really wanted to learn more about the craft for a long time. Glenn broke down the fundamentals of reading, character development, and script analysis to help make a more believable performance. Now we're getting into blocking and developing the physical aspects of a character. I'm learning a great deal and Glenn's patience and encouragement make him the ideal instructor to learn and grow. Highly recommend!

I'm the Co-Artistic Director and founding member of ReVamp Collective, a Philadelphia based feminist-centric theatre company. I've taught with Walnut Street Theatre, Lantern Theater Company, Theatre Horizon, Delaware Theatre Company, and Philadelphia Theatre Company. I received her BA in Theatre from Temple University with a minor in Art History.

I've not only been an actor, but a director/producer, as someone who has been on both sides of the table I know what directors, casting directors and producers are looking for as well as knowing what it is like to audition as an actor.

*** Lesson Details ***
In a one hour lesson, we will spend twenty five minutes on vocal exercises designed to teach support and placement. Having performed leads on and Off Broadway, I know that without good technique you can't do eight shows a week, do back to back sets in a nightclub or cabaret or tour as a pop or rock singer. The second half of the lesson is spent on songs. As an acting as well as vocal coach, I focus on dramatics as well as musical interpretation. A singer must be connected to the words as well as the music. I hope to teach you to love singing as much as I do.

Mary is a lively, voluble person with enormous experience particularly in musical theater who enjoys working with students.
Initially and as the student moves along, Mary assesses talent and abilities and then continues to periodically reassess the learning in a manner that never ceases to amaze me. I have been working with Mary for six months and found her evaluations of my strengths and what I need to work on to be spot on every time.
What I esteem most is Mary's technical acumen, the techniques she learned from her teachers and mentors and her experience as a performer. Her keen ear and eye immediately pick out every nuance being sung that needs work. She answers questions about where "to go" in throat, mouth, tongue, torso, etc., demonstrating how to correctly produce the sounds, tones, and supported breathing in question. Voice teachers, of course, are supposed to do this. Mary does this superbly.
If you are seeking a teacher who knows her technique, especially in musical theater, I highly recommend Mary.

Hi Mary,
In my opinion, our session last night wasn't productive. My opinion is, you weren't really interested in teaching me. Out of the 60 minute session. I only did about 3 to 5 minutes of exercises. You spent 55 minutes talking about your past and present students, professional actors you know, show business, acting techniques and your accomplishments. You did talk about about the script that i would read and the emotion behind it, but that lead into more about your students and professional actors you know. it took you 30 minutes in your office to find that script, (which should have been done a head of time) then we went downstairs and another 25 minutes of talking before i could read it to you.

Towards the end when i finally spoke up about so much time being passed and nothing being done. You said you needed to see my personality so you can know where to start with me. That made no sense to me, how are you seeing my personality if you are the one mostly talking about your accomplishments and who you know and what you've done?
Why not pick a point and start there and see what my weak and strong points are? You also asked me the same questions you asked me on the phone, have you ever taken lessons before, why do you want to act, what do you do for work which to me just consumed more time.

What i found surprising and discouraging was when you asked me why would I take acting classes up here when there are some of the best acting schools in the world just an hour away in New York City? I wish you had said that to me over the phone before our meeting, I would reconsider taking lessons from you and just spend the extra money and go down to the city. If i were an instructor i would be grateful for anyone who sacrificed their time and money to come see me, and never ask why they chose me when there is better not that far away. With that said I have decided to cancel my remaining lessons with you please do not bill me any further.

PS Telling a person of color that they are a weird fit as a real estate agent in Croton N.Y, and would be a better fit in Brooklyn N.Y was discriminatory and offensive to me.

I work in-depth with students on finding specific, personal, and important choices to make as a character and using their vocal range and tonality to influence their characters. In addition to this deeper work, I also work to give students the fundamentals; vocabulary, tactics, intention, performer etiquette. These classes are for students 13-30. (Some younger performers may want to begin in my child acting courses and build up to these.)

As a teaching artist for children I have worked with Yes! And... I worked with Joy during her directed production of "dtf" as a part of Drexel University's Director's Lab performance during fall of 2016. Joy was an absolute blast to work with and was extremely encouraging during the course of our rehearsals leading up to the performance. She really helped my scene partner and I to explore our characters on a much deeper level than what was proactively displayed on stage. I felt that it helped me immensely as an actor during the show as I felt much more comfortable in my position on stage and more "in-tune" with my character. Joy is a wonderful director who puts in maximum effort for directing and takes a personal and effective approach to actor preparation for her productions!
