Tu Quyen is a wonderful teacher. She teaches you technique, musicality and theory. In a short period of time, I have been able to progress more than I have previously with other teachers. She is very understanding and sets achievable goals for you. I have been wanting to learn a Chopin piece for a very long time, and I am happy to say, I am slowly tackling the piece with her guidance. My schedule requests were able to be accommodated as well. I would recommend her to anyone looking for an exceptional teacher.

Tu Quyen was an absolutely amazing teacher. I've recently got back into piano after a 14-year hiatus and had to start from scratch. She understood and was able to accommodate & adjust my lessons accordingly. She is also one of the only teacher I've had that teaches me how important it is to connect with the piano and the songs as the pianist. Highly recommended!

Tu Quyen was excellent. She read the information I sent her on my experience and interests, and fine-tuned my lesson exactly to my taste and level.

For example, I mentioned at the beginning of the lesson that I would like to learn music theory to aid my practicing, and she incorporated it into the lesson immediately. She even gave examples using ballet, which I had mentioned in my bio.

About Michael
Beginning his cello instruction at the age of 8, Michael spent the majority of his early years under the guidance of Nancy Hambleton-Torrente, current director of music for the Yorktown public school districts in Westchester county. During his undergraduate years, he attended Colgate University where he received a B.A. in both Music and Psychology. While at Colgate, Michael had the privilege of studying with cellist Florent Renard-Payen, founder and director of the esteemed Tarob Cello Ensemble. Upon graduation, Michael continued his studies at Montclair State University where he received an Artist Diploma in performance. Under the guidance of Nicholas Tzavaras of the Shanghai String Quartet, Michael performed two solo recitals for the John J. Cali School of Music before further pursuing his studies in the studio of Marc T. Johnson of the
Vermeer Quartet. From 2012 to 2014, Michael served as principal cellist of the Symphony Orchestra at Hunter College while concurrently earning a Masters degree in Music Education. He graduated with summa cum laude honors in 2014 and began his teaching career with the New York City Department of Education later that year.

At present, Michael is director of Orchestral activities at P.S. 205 Clarion in Brooklyn N.Y. and principal cellist of the Riverside Orchestra on the upper west side of Manhattan. He runs a full private teaching studio and actively gigs in and around the greater New York City area. He has also played in numerous master classes for world renowned cellists such as Lynn Harrell and Andres Diaz, and has had the privilege of working with esteemed conductors such as Marietta Cheng of the Southern Finger Lakes Orchestra, Paul Hostetter, Chair of Orchestral Activities for the Schwob School of Music, and Rueben Blundell, current Conductor and Music Director of the Lansdowne Symphony Orchestra, the Hunter Symphony and the Riverside Orchestra.

My teaching philosophy is one that tailors to the specific needs, interests and abilities of each individual. Throughout my years of private instruction, I have learned that no two individuals learn and/or think the same way. Thus, for some students I have found the Suzuki method to be highly effective, while for others I have been more comprehensive with my instruction, incorporated scales, etudes, sonatas, concerti and Bach suites for a more well rounded approach. I have been taking lessons with Michael for over a year now. I've taken lessons before with other instructors (though not in cello). Michael is one of the best instructors that I have ever had. He instructs and challenges you to get better, while at the same time being patient with your development. It has been a pleasure being a student of Michael.

I would not be the person I am today if music wasn't the focal point in my life as it is. Not only do I absolutely love performing and studying music myself, but I adore teaching as well. Part of the musical experience is taking what you hear and what you learn from others and building on it to create your own musical contributions. I take the gifts other teachers and musicians have given me very seriously and subsequently feel the great importance of imparting my knowledge unto others.

Whether you want to be a professional, or just be competent enough to enjoy yourself, we all practice, study technique and gain knowledge about music with really only one goal in mind: To have all the tools necessary to express ourselves adeptly through music. All the technique in the world will not make you a great musician. Similarly, you can be extre
mely creative and knowledgeable, but if you don't have the technique and vocabulary needed to express your ideas, you will find yourself very limited and suppressed musically.

My philosophy about teaching follows that I am here to provide you with those tools in a fun, exciting way. When I say "tools" I mean the whole toolbox. This includes giving you the technique, correcting bad habits, providing listening material, finding holes in your playing and much more. A good music teacher must be more than an instructor, but a mentor and an inspirational guide. My best teachers were the ones who could cultivate my playing not just through the physical aspects but ESPECIALLY through the cerebral. We ALL need encouragement and inspiration to get the best out of our natural talent. I love to encourage my students to do their best. To strive to not only complete exercises, but to execute them well. Every student is different, and therefore I will tailor their education with me on an individual basis. I expect a lot out of my students because I strongly believe in my teaching ability as well as their ability to learn and feel good about their progress.

*** Lesson Details ***
-I am here for you.

I would not teach if I wasn't very interested in the progress of my students. I want you to be the biggest, baddest, awe-inspiring drummer/percussionist possible. I want to ultimately end up at your shows and concerts and be able to say "That's MY student." You can always be guaranteed that when studying with me everything I assign has precisely that goal in mind.

-Strict or Laid Back?

Many people might ask if I'm strict, or laid back. My response is that I am excited and driven to help you reach success. I will never scold you because that sort of practice has no place in teaching. I also understand that learning isn't just a straight upwards incline of progression. We're all humans. Sometimes we progress astronomically in a short period of time and sometimes we have to fight hard to nail something. Sometimes we have a lot of time to practice, and sometimes we simply don't. My job is to make the most out of every situation and help you learn no matter what. That being said, I will still hound you to practice as much as healthily possible!

-What do you want out of music?

Probably the most important question I will undoubtedly ask you upon meeting you is why you are taking lessons. There is no way to formulate a tailored lesson plan if I don't know what it is you're working towards.

-Expected Material

Like I said, I can't tell you very specifically what your lesson plan will be, but I CAN give you examples of what I almost always assign. Individually written out exercises, exercises from books, assigned reading/listening, song covers, chart writing/reading, improvisational exercises, rudiment study, warm-up routines, among others.

-Don't be Afraid to Make Mistakes

Mistakes are part of the learning process! If you aren't making mistakes then I'm doing something wrong. Never be afraid to make mistakes.

-You Get What You Give

I promise I'll be there for you. I'll be there to give you the material and show you the path, but you're going to have to be there for yourself as well. The more prepared you are for our lessons, the more you will grow from the time we spend together.

Mastering an instrument takes time and effort both by student and teacher. The sooner we get started the sooner you get on that path. I'm ready whenever you are.

Very informative, we went over terminology, how important it is to have the proper sticks and the correct way to hold them. Reading the music and playing the proper beat. We did a lot for 1 lesson, my daughter loved it.

Flexible teaching methods!

Asaf is just brilliant. During the first session, my son was very distracted by the other things in the music room ie lights, instruments etc but Asaf managed to engage him by being extremely flexible in his teaching ie he is not wedded to any order and has a lesson plan in mind but goes with the flow and the interest of the child - this ensures that all that was intended on being covered is, and as a result of the flexibility, my son just loves these drum lesson and Asaf. Asaf makes him focus and has built a great teacher/student relationship in only 3 session. I would highly recommend Asaf.

About Kathryn
Kathy believes that variety is the spice of not only life, but also music. Raised singing folk music with a musical family (think accordions, guitars and lots of vocal harmonies), she learned guitar and piano at an early age, but began singing even earlier.

Her quest to give the world the best her vocal cords could offer led her to obtain an undergraduate degree in vocal performance from the University of Nebraska (where she graduated honorable mention, named with the vocal department's Outstanding Senior in Music award, and also obtained a minor in theatre) and a master's degree in music from the Cleveland Institute of Music. Both of these degrees emphasized classical singing technique, and through this study Kathy gained a solid foundation for her musical craft.

Once out of school, Kathy then sought to begin creating HER music
and HER sound, a challenge which continues to manifest itself even today in a variety of ways. Kathy is now a singer/songwriter and performs often with her own band in which she sings, plays guitar, writes her own songs and arranges them for intricate backup harmonies and multiple instrumentation. A variety of influences are apparent in her music, including the musical genres of folk, pop, jazz, and yes, even hip hop. She has recorded three albums of her music and all have been received to critical acclaim.

She sings as a professional cantor at St. John the Baptist Church in Manhattan, and teaches private voice, guitar and piano lessons throughout the city of New York. She served for a time as the general music teacher for St. Dominic's School in the Bronx, where she was responsible for Pre-K through 8th grade music classes, and, true to form, she is often called upon in a multitude of situations to perform in a variety of musical genres. She is always pleased with the ever-changing musical scenery around her.

*** Lesson Details ***
A lesson with Kathy equals half of the allotted time being used to learn good technique (i.e., learning healthy vocal habits, singing vocalizes, learning to read music, playing scales, etc.) and the other half of the time singing and playing repertoire. The repertoire includes both pieces chosen by Kathy (always approved by the student) which excite and inspire the student's particular musical tastes while providing a new challenge in technique to be conquered, and also pieces brought in by the student; for example, if a student is working on music for a specific performance, etc., or if they just really like a piece and want to learn how to play or sing it, Kathy is always ready and willing to lend a hand and an ear!

Vocally, Kathy believes good basic technique is the same for every genre of music. Therefore, great emphasis is placed on learning to breathe and support your sound correctly as well as maintain good posture, rid your body of unwanted tensions, etc.; musical styles beyond that basic technique change only in small stylistic ways, and Kathy is knowledgeable in quiet a variety of most musical styles.

With guitar, Kathy focuses on learning to read and play musical notation and chords without using guitar tablature. Again, a variety of musical styles are used for instruction, including everything from classical to punk!

And with piano, Kathy focuses on learning to read and play musical notation as well as mastering scales and chord progressions, inversions, etc. She loves opportunities to combine voice lessons with guitar lessons, or voice lessons with piano lessons, as one instrument feeds into the other in interesting and helpful ways.

I travel with my travel guitar and music for lessons. I expect guitar students to have their own guitar, and piano or voice students to have some sort of keyboard, even a small one.

I have experience with classical singing, music theatre (I have a minor from my undergraduate education in Theatre) and folk. I am a jazz trumpeter, improviser, and composer as well as an avid listener and enthusiastic educator. I maintain an active performance schedule playing improvised music as well as funk, soul, afro-beat, reggae, hip-hop, and American folk music. In addition to trumpet, I have experience performing and recording on slide trumpet, trombone, baritone horn, and french horn. I write and arrange music for my own groups and regularly write and record horn arrangements for folk, pop, and reggae groups. I have attended Berklee College of Music and Ithaca College, and I have a Master's degree in jazz trumpet performance from the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston.

s including the Hudson Arts Alliance in Hudson, MA, the Kittredge Elementary School in North Andover, MA, and the Performing Arts Center of Metro West in Framingham, MA. I have studied jazz performance with trumpet greats John McNeil and Walter White, improvisation with jazz gurus David Schumacher and Jerry Bergonzi, and George Russell's Lydian Chromatic Concept of Tonal Organization with master composer and theorist Ben Schwendener.

As an educator, my aim is to inspire in my students an enthusiasm for the artistic performance of music of any style. I strive to convey my own excitement for the art to young trumpeters and improvisers, and I have worked to encourage self-motivation and a longstanding interest in musical self-expression in elementary through high school students and adults. I have taken the trumpet lessons with Bobby S. for about two years now. What I really appreciate most about Bobby is his patience. As an older student, it can be very challenging to learn trumpet. Bobby presents his lesson in a way that is easy to understand. He takes the time to explore what my difficulties are. Then he presents me with ways to challenge them. Bobby also has a good understanding of music theory. He explains and demonstrates musical concepts very thoroughly.

Kate's wonderful talent for music is impressive and so is her teaching method.
I started off knowing basically nothing and had no sense of rhythm. Although I knew it was going to be challenging, I was determined to have fun while learning, no matter what - and picking Kate as my teacher was a very fortunate decision.
I am so glad that throughout the course of two months, I was able to learn how to play some of my favorite songs on the uke and also was gifted with precious tips and tricks to improve my practice in the long term!
Kate is patient, sweet and will amaze you with her skills - and you'll also be amazed by how much you can learn in one hour with her. I'd rate the classes with 10 stars if that was even possible :)

Kate is fantastic!! She has such a warm, easygoing personality, and I was very comfortable having her in my home. She is extremely knowledgeable about the uke and was able to immediately recognize my strengths and weaknesses. I feel challenged, but not overwhelmed. I am a professional vocalist, clarinetist, and music teacher that wants you to succeed! I have performed as a semifinalist in international competitions, performed as an orchestra member in three opera productions in Italy, and performed orchestra concerts at Yale University, the New World Center, and other notable venues. Additionally, I have receive full-tuition scholarships to perform in music festivals. I have had instruction through private lessons and masterclasses with acclaimed clarinetists such as Charles Neidich, Frank Cohen, and Ayako Oshima. While I love to perform, I have a great interest in teaching, as a college-level ear training tutor as well as student teaching experience in elementary/high school band, jazz band, high school choir, and music theory. I am a big proponent of music's benefits to the mind-body connection
and I love to incorporate movement-related techniques, such as yoga and breathing exercises, to fully integrate musical and physical exercises

I am a mom at 50 and wanted to learn to play an instrument and learn how to read music - something I always wanted to do. I chose the clarinet. I was nervous and needed confidence. Kristen was able to get a good read on my ability and explain things at my level. She was encouraging and very patient! If I didn't understand something she always had different ways to teach it. She let me choose some music that I enjoy and felt connected to. She has a happy and caring personality and her energy is amazing! I love to listen to her play - its inspiring!

About Josh
Josh Levitin began studying piano at age 16, an age generally considered late for a new piano student. Almost immediately, his teachers found that he had a natural ability to play the instrument at a high level. Tereza Lee, at the time a graduate piano student at the Manhattan School of Music, was Josh’s primary piano teacher and mentor, and helped him prepare for college, university and conservatory auditions. At age 18, after playing the piano for only two years, Josh received offers of admission from six conservatory programs to study piano performance, most notably from the Manhattan School of Music and Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh.

Josh chose to attend Carnegie Mellon, where in 2009 he was one of only three piano students to gain admission to the University’s School of Music. That same year, Josh became a Hadar Scholar,
receiving financial support from the Richard and Mica Hadar Foundation to pursue his undergraduate music studies.

Josh graduated from Carnegie Mellon with University and College Honors. He also received a merit scholarship to study with pianist Sandra Shen at the Brevard Music Center in Brevard, N.C., where he studied for three summers, and performed solo and collaborative piano repertoire. While there, he studied further with Indiana University Jacobs School of Music professor, pianist Norman Krieger. Josh’s teachers at Carnegie Mellon were Sergey Schepkin and Ralph Zitterbart.

Josh is currently on the faculty of Church Street School for Music and Art in Manhattan, where he teaches piano, and Dan’s Music Studio in West Orange, N.J, where, in addition to piano, he uses music as therapy to help students with disabilities.

Josh also offers private piano lessons. Josh reaches students in New York City, and Essex and Passaic Counties in New Jersey.

Josh is a great instructor for our daughter. He puts a tremendous amount of thought into presenting his lessons in a way she can learn and absorb them.

We have seen how learning music has had such a positive impact on her life, beyond the technical skills of playing the piano and we attribute that to Josh's patience and flexibility.
