ALL IN ONE

L'Marco is providing my 8 year old son more than what I thought. He's teaching the things that go along with singing and the words and definition as well as having exams so he will really know what they mean. Diction, posture, diaghragm,larynax, glissando (?). He's teaching him pitch, performance and stage presence. Because of L'Marco and his wonderful teachings my son has song the lead to a song in church which he was very afraid before. Now he has many request to lead solos and perform at 2 separate banquets this year (2014). Several of my friends want to utilize L;Marco for their children... NO NO he's all mine. lol

I've been studying under L'Marco Smith for almost a year and can say not only has my singing ability improved but my confidence in myself and my voice as well. About Kolja
Kolja is a versatile drummer/percussionist that has been actively playing/teaching/recording for the last 20 years of his life.
He teaches at his studio in Williamsburg.
He has studied Jazz drumming at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Graz, Europe. Although trained as a western drummer, studying with the Indian master drummer Taalyogi Pandit Suresh Talwalkar, has given him insight how to teach rhythm and make it a fun process.

Kolja is a wonderful teacher. He's very laid-back and easy-going and all around a very pleasant guy to get along with. He is also very willing to work with people in whatever desires they have for the drums. Don't get me wrong though, you're not goofing off during the lesson. He's very focused on teaching the drums well and wants to make sure you're solid in whatever it is you're learning. He has a good balance between patience and making sure you're not falling into bad habits by using poor technique repeatedly. No matter what skill level you're at, I'm positive that you have something to learn from Kolja.

Kolja is great! I've taken lessons for various instruments since I was young and never had as much fun as I do in drum lessons. He has a great energy and gives positive, constructive feedback. His years of experience as a drummer and instructor were immediately evident. I felt improvement even after the first week of practice! I appreciated that he took time to understand what I wanted out of drum lessons and how I prefer to learn. I have been wanting to start drumming for years and am so glad that I found Kolja!

I studied drums when I was younger and wanted to reacquaint myself with my long lost art. I am so happy I chose Kolja, He has this amazing joyful energy. He's an amazing drummer and can explain how to do it. Wow! He made me feel really comfortable from the get go. He was very thorough assessing my skill level, my goals and how much time I actually have to give to practicing. He is teaching me how to reread drum notation and really making sure I have the proper posture and holding the sticks correctly. I am very interested in jazz drumming and poly-rhythm. I think with him I will reach my goals. I'm slowly getting there. He is really good at explaining and showing. I think I really lucked out.

About Oliver
Hi, I'm Oliver Devine E, a professional musician currently residing in north Brooklyn.

I graduated from NYU in 2005 with a degree in theory and composition (after completing 2 years as a jazz performance major). I played in the rock bands Arpline and The Kiss Off and recorded for Universal Records with the super group Pure Love. I currently record and perform under the monikers Aeolian, Negation, Afterworldsmen, Sandglass and Marlowe Dies as well as performing live with the post-punk band Cloak.

I've been teaching both piano and music theory lessons since 2006 and have had great success with students, several of which I have forged mentor-student relationships with. With my vast knowledge of esoteric and popular music genres (I'm comfortable with folk, death metal, modern jazz, indie rock, hip-hop... well, you get the point. I'm a
music obsessive) I believe becoming a total musician should be a goal for any student but I enjoy the challenge that each individual brings to the table.

I'm currently attending Hunter college to get a Master's degree in Music Education (K-12).

In the past I've tailored lessons based on the specific needs of my students.
For example: someone who can read music based on childhood experience, but is struggling to regain confidence, could use technical exercises, piece-learning w/ structure and theory insights, as well as genre work outside their comfort zone. For a total beginner, reading music might be a long haul; so strategies for learning simple tunes and more general theory insights are a must.

Curriculum I commonly use for piano/theory includes, Hannon, easier Bach repertoire, Beethoven/Mozart/Chopin/etc,, The Jazz Piano book, Tonal Harmony, This is Your Brain on Music. Because of my extensive relationship with a wealth of texts, I never just rest on my laurels and will find the right material for you (even if that means printing or e-mailing pages from my own collection)

I'm fairly laid back compared to many teachers, but as a forward thinking, well-rounded musician (music is my life) I will revel in pushing students to max out their potential, no matter what their experience level.

I have only had a few lessons so far, but I am enjoying them. Oliver is very willing to rehearse music of your interest and is very helpful with any concerns you may have. He pushes you out of your comfort zone just enough and I feel that I am definitely growing as a musician. Great experience so far.

I've been taking piano lessons with Oliver for about a year now, and in just one year, my love and ability to play piano has surpassed my expectations. Oliver creates his lesson plan based on the individual's needs, and adjusts his teaching to match the students capacity to learn, making for a fun, relaxed, and comprehensive lesson each time.

Oliver has helped me not only understand theory, which helps with composing music, but also how to read and play sheet music. Like anything, you only get better with practice, but having a great teacher to guide you along the way makes all the difference.

I was a total novice and the progress that I’ve shown over the past several months under Elliot's guidance is almost miraculous to me. He is honest and tough but always encouraging. His approach is quite surgical, technical and focuses on finessing the finest details in how you engage your body to create the best sound possible. My bad habits were identified and I was given efficient tools to counteract them. After singing for so long with improper technique I needed a teacher who could throw me in the deep end and the results speak for themselves. Crazy value for money!

I make the lessons fun and interesting and relate well with all types of personalities. My students view me as a teacher and friend who' s a good listener when they have things like overloads in homework from school and other complications that kids face.They do great at NYSSMA and are asked to play in all ensembles at school. I love animals and my hobbies are hiking in the mountains including in snow and ice, camping, building things and work on my own car when I can. Most of my students stay with me for
8-10 yrs. and handle themselves very well in all ensembles. They play to earn scholarships for college as well and play for life. Happy Playing!

If you are looking for an excellent teacher that can help you develop both technique and musicality, I highly recommend Zhana.

I have had the privilege of studying with her for seven months as an adult beginner, and I have learned so much. I come out of every lesson feeling like I’ve made progress—even when I am unhappy with how I am playing, Zhana helps me understand a key thing that I need to do to play better. She is able to explain things so that you don’t just conceptually understand, but so that your body can understand too (for all those times that your brain knows what you need to do but your finger/wrist/arm/etc. won’t cooperate).

Because she has played as a professional performer, Zhana draws on her experience to guide you to bring musicality and emotion to whatever you’re playing… even if you’re still in the early Suzuki books like me. I’ve studied with many teachers in the past (in school and privately) for piano, clarinet and voice lessons, so I know that the ability to teach across this broad spectrum of skills is rare.

LESSON DETAILS

Whether you are a parent looking for instruction for your child, or for yourself, Rachel can customize the right program that best suits your needs. Her students come from all walks of life and have different goals, but they all have one thing in common. They love performing and have the desire to be the best at their chosen craft (singing/acting).

Some students want to sing/act for themselves, others want to sing/act for a hobby, and others want to be professional performers. That's where Rachel comes in. No matter what your goals are, she can help. Rachel teaches her students how to become true artists without tearing them down and without taking away the part of them that makes them unique. She teaches healthy technique that is based off of the human anatomy; the science of how the body/mind works and how the body/mind can work as efficiently as possible while singing or acting.

Learning how to sing/act is a process and doesn't happen overnight. Rachel's ultimate goal as a teacher is to not only make her students the best performers and singers they can be, but also give them all of the proper tools they need to have a more productive mind frame and become self-sufficient. Of course this can take years to master. It takes time and dedication.

OTHER LESSON INFORMATION

SINGING: Bel Canto singing technique for the modern singer is taught in private and group classes. No one sounds like old opera singers, even if the student wants to sing opera. Students are allowed to choose most of the material they learn in the lesson. There will be times when Rachel will suggest a song to a student but if the student doesn't enjoy the song, they will work as a team to find a song that does work for the student. Gain a better tone quality, complete control of your voice, bigger range, more flexibility, and confidence. Learn healthy voice technique, how to fully take care of your own voice so you can sing for the rest of your life (even after lessons), and become a self sufficient performer for life.

ACTING: Stella Adler, Stanislavsky, Chekhov, and Meisner Acting Technique for Theatre/Camera is taught in private and group classes. All students are exposed to each technique and Rachel sees which technique each student responds to the most. Once the student and Rachel are able to identify the technique, Rachel continues to use the terminology of that technique for the remainder of the time the student is in lessons. Students eventually are able to play roles truthfully and realistically, even if the roles are opposite of the student's own personality.

BY THE TIME STUDENTS GRADUATE FROM LESSONS:

1. Gain a lifelong, solid, consistent, and healthy technique that they can always count on in practice and performance.

2. Gain specific technical and personal notes in a notebook and/or computer file that is organized and always accessible for review.

3. Gain artistry, performance skills, and a strong voice that will look/sound authentic; Singers will sound appropriate to whatever style of music they are singing. (No fake sound or look.) Actors will just be in the moment and truthful whether they are on stage or in front of the camera.

4. Gain the confidence to always put on a great performance.

5. Gain focus and a more productive mind frame.

6. Become self-sufficient by knowing how to assess a problem and then fix it without creating a new issue.

We specialize in Bel Canto voice technique for the modern singer. Each student can sing all genres without sounding too classical, "fake", and without losing their voice while singing for long periods of time.

Other Specialties: Teaching acting technique for theatre-TV-Film (Stella Adler, Stanislavsky, Chekhov, & Meisner), performance skills, songwriting, and creating self-sufficient singers-actors-performers (Artist Development).

STUDIO POLICIES-

CANCELLATION:
24 hour lesson cancellation

MISSED LESSONS/MAKE UPS:
If the student needs to miss a lesson for sickness, they or their parent/ guardian, if the student is under 18, must let Rachel know at least 24 hours before their missed lesson. If they need to miss due to an other activity or vacation, they must contact Rachel at least a week from their next scheduled lesson in advance to prevent from forfeiting the lesson. All make ups will be scheduled within 4 weeks from the missed lesson. If rescheduled lesson or make up lesson is missed, no new make up will be given unless Rachel is not able to teach for some rare reason.

LATENESS:
If a student is going to be late they need to contact Rachel as soon as possible, to let her know they will be late. Lessons will end on time unless she is able to extend the lesson due to a late student or her schedule allows for it though please understand, Rachel would be extending a courtesy and would not be obligated to do so. If on the rare occasion Rachel is running late, she will always make up the time.

SITTING IN: Parents/Guardians are ONLY permitted to stay for the first lesson and are NOT permitted to sit in for any other lesson/class unless invited. This is to promote good/strong teacher-student relationship quickly and easily. Also, many times students feel more comfortable when their parents/guardians leave.

Taking lessons with Rachel has been one the best decisions I've ever made. She not only has helped me with acting but has helped me become a better person. I've grown to understand myself and I've learned and done things I would never have done. And would never have been able to do. About Bobby
I am a jazz trumpeter, improviser, and composer as well as an avid listener and enthusiastic educator. I maintain an active performance schedule playing improvised music as well as funk, soul, afro-beat, reggae, hip-hop, and American folk music. In addition to trumpet, I have experience performing and recording on slide trumpet, trombone, baritone horn, and french horn. I write and arrange music for my own groups and regularly write and record horn arrangements for folk, pop, and reggae groups. I have attended Berklee College of Music and Ithaca College, and I have a Master's degree in jazz trumpet performance from the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston.

I have over nine years of experience working with students ages 7 to adult. I have worked both from my home studio and though several public and community music school program
s including the Hudson Arts Alliance in Hudson, MA, the Kittredge Elementary School in North Andover, MA, and the Performing Arts Center of Metro West in Framingham, MA. I have studied jazz performance with trumpet greats John McNeil and Walter White, improvisation with jazz gurus David Schumacher and Jerry Bergonzi, and George Russell's Lydian Chromatic Concept of Tonal Organization with master composer and theorist Ben Schwendener.

As an educator, my aim is to inspire in my students an enthusiasm for the artistic performance of music of any style. I strive to convey my own excitement for the art to young trumpeters and improvisers, and I have worked to encourage self-motivation and a longstanding interest in musical self-expression in elementary through high school students and adults. I have experience performing many styles of music from jazz and experimental improvised music to funk, reggae, and afro-beat, and I use my knowledge of divergent genres to encourage creative experimentation and convey the expressive artistic elements shared by all music. As an improviser I am particularly interested in teaching the theory and philosophy of spontaneous composition and musical communication.

I have taken the trumpet lessons with Bobby S. for about two years now. What I really appreciate most about Bobby is his patience. As an older student, it can be very challenging to learn trumpet. Bobby presents his lesson in a way that is easy to understand. He takes the time to explore what my difficulties are. Then he presents me with ways to challenge them. Bobby also has a good understanding of music theory. He explains and demonstrates musical concepts very thoroughly.

Gretchen Erlichman received her Master of Music in Vocal Pedagogy and Performance, with distinction, from Westminster Choir College and her Bachelor of Music, magna cum laude, in Voice Performance from Nazareth College of Rochester. She has also completed studies in Piano, Organ, Collaborative Piano, and Music History at the collegiate level and has conducted and presented research in the fields of Vocal Pedagogy and Musicology.

Gretchen has performed throughout the United States and in Europe. She has most recently performed the operatic roles of La Chauve-Souris in Ravel’s L'enfant et les sortileges, Maestra de la novicia in Puccini’s Suor Angelica, and the Gingerbread Witch & the Mother in Humperdinck’s Hansel and Gretel. As a member of the Westminster Symphonic Choir, she has sung under the baton of many notable conductors, including
