Mark T.

Nashville, TN

About Mark

Hello!! My name is Mark and I am YOUR teacher! (YOU just don’t know it yet)

Simply put, I love music… every facet of it, in fact! Music has been a huge part of my life! From starting on alto and tenor saxophones as a kid and then learning acoustic and electric guitars, to ripping scorching solos on stage with Chris Cagle and singing background vocals with Reba McEntire, music has always inspired me! Now I hope to inspire you with creative, challenging, and fun lessons!!

Long story short, (too late) ☺ at a young age I dove head first into music, but more importantly, the electric gui
tar! I learned everything about them from how they are constructed to how magnetic pickups make sound come out of an amplifier. Then came the true challenge… I started meeting others like me and before too long I was playing in bands and making music! (which is the ULTIMATE GOAL of playing any instrument when you get down to it)

After many years of self study and private lessons, I took the initiative to move from Texas to Los Angeles, California to go to Musicians Institute’s Guitar program. I honed my chops as I studied with Paul Gilbert, Scott Henderson, George Lynch, Raphael Moreira, and Robben Ford just to name a few. I graduated with honors and received my AA degree in September 2001. (3 days after 9/11) Learning is great, but I NEEDED to make music… so I played in many bands (heavy metal, reggae, pop, country, blues rock) and shared the stage with many amazing musicians along the way including members of Black Label Society, Dakota Moon, Korn, and many others.

I STILL wasn’t satisfied, so I decided to learn how to make commercial music and spent 7 years learning the craft of recording, mixing, and producing music. I went back to school eventually and graduated with honors (again) from LA’s Recording Institute of Technology in 2009. I also received outstanding mix and got my ProTools HD Operators Certifications.

WHERE IS ALL THIS LEADING? Well, I’m glad you asked! ☺ I have the unique ability to help sculpt your goals and tailor your training because of the vast wealth of experience I possess. Notice I didn’t say “knowledge?” I’m still learning! As I hope you will be for the rest of your life! Any truly great musician knows that they’ll never know it all!

My wife and I moved to Nashville in November of 2012 to continue our musical adventures! She’s a touring background singer and songwriter and one of my biggest inspirations…. Hope I can become one of yours!

Can’t wait to meet you!

I am a very easy going, friendly, patient guy (And I'm quite funny.. I think) who believes that learning music is built upon a strong relationship between teacher and student. This relationship involves good communication, honesty, open mindedness, and most importantly the desire to LEARN and have FUN. I approach teaching music by knowing and understanding the student's musical goals, and teaching fundamentals, theory, and technique through the style(s) of music that the student wants to learn. For beginners, I tend to teach basic techniques and chords through simple songs to get the student playing music as quickly as possible.

My three promises to you as a student:

1) I guarantee that you will have fun during the time you're with me! I know lessons can be intimidating and stressful, but they have to be fun and that's part of my job.

2) I promise that I will gently push you to be the best you can be but never ask you to do something that I think you won't be able to achieve with practice.

3) I stand behind my education and experiences: I've learned music from the best in the field and you will get nothing less than that from me during a lesson.

My three expectations of you:

1) Come willing to try new and different things in a low pressure environment. I don't bite...I swear.

2) Come prepared to play. Why? If you want to play guitar, you have to play. Relatively simple, right?

3) Come prepared to make mistakes. No lesson is perfect and no lesson should be. Lessons are your opportunity to make mistakes without being judged, so make mistakes, commit to not making the same ones the next time and enjoy and appreciate the praise and feedback you get along the way. Music is a journey that cannot be completed in a few one hour sessions, so I hope and expect that you won't treat it that way.

Now let's make music together!

Learned and improved my writing

I took songwriting lessons with Mark. I was looking to get to know the form and tools of songwriting to know what people were looking for and to make my songs better. He helped me out so much with music theory as you need that behind all songs and with helping me create some great songs. As i look back at my songs from when I started to now, they have grown and adapted so much for the better. My lyrics flow so much better and I know what people are looking for in the music industry as I have some great songs to show from these lessons. Mark is very smart guy in all music aspects, if your looking for lessons from guitar to songwriting to music theory, I would definitely recommend him. If you are willing to put in the time to learn and get better he will make sure of it!!!

I learned A LOT from Mark!!

Mark is a really knowledgable teacher who cares about your goals and progress. He is also a very patient and laid back person, (which made me feel better about trying new techniques since I was an absolute beginner when we started) and he REALLY took my guitar playing far. Now I understand music theory and how to apply it to my songwriting AND how to improvise over the chord changes in my songs. I'd also have to say he is very humble for how good of a guitar player he really is. You can learn a lot from Mark, and I still use and go through his curriculum. I would definitely recommend him to other students.

*** Lesson Details ***
All students who sign up for lessons will receive a basic fundamental foundation of musical knowledge. Once the fundamentals are understood and assessed, we can then begin to take a more in depth approach in reaching the student's specific goals as a musician. Aspiring songwriters, usually playing piano or guitar will have a different agenda than a high school saxophonist practicing for their state music assessments. Lessons are built around each student's specific interests.

It is important to know that your musical goals can be met with consistent practice, discipline, and dedication to your chosen instrument. So what is the most valuable and sometimes the most difficult skill musicians must learn and subscribe to? HOW to practice...and that will be the underlying theme to each and every lesson we share. The way we practice shapes us as musicians!

Remember that each time people hear you play or sing, you are only compared to the best there is. Smart practice makes perfect!

*** Studio Equipment ***
Parents may accompany students at lessons - sitting area in office / lesson studio room, or down stairs in living room. Electronic digital piano - 88 keys fully-weighted, music stands; iPad, Metronome, saxophones, clarinet, flute; books

It is obvious that Dave has a lot of training, experience and strength in teaching piano. He made my son feel at ease and had a lot of tools for assessing my sons ability and skills and areas that needed development. While being encouraging, he was also able to develop a practice plan and strategy for helping my son to get better in a fun environment. My son left with a huge smile, saying he was excited and liked his new teacher.

*** Lesson Details ***
Leandria is a laid back teacher but loves to see her students’ progress with their music. She uses the Suzuki method, but believes it’s very important to for her students to learn the basics of the instrument, how to read music and at least 2 songs within the first 3-6 months. In a typical lesson they would start with a scale---saying the note, saying the finger number, and then saying both--- then they would work on which ever piece is their focus at that time, and then they would bow to each other dismissing the lesson.

*** Travel Equipment ***
Their own instruments and music stands.

*** Specialties ***
Suzuki, however I think it is extremely important that the student learns how to read. I use my own method to ensure this.

Mary R.

Nashville, TN

About Mary

I started playing saxophone in 1994. It was an immediate passion! As the years went on my thirst for music grew and I picked up more instruments. No matter which instrument I play the passion is the same. I like to write and arrange as well so I feel an extreme importance on music theory. I am classically trained although my drive is always towards roots music. I try my hardest to combine those two elements.

I currently play baritone saxophone in the Uptown Savages. I am also in the Dead Man's Carnival. In that I may play Alto, Tenor, Baritone Sax, Flute, Bass Clarinet, Accordion, Piano or
sing. You can hear me on recordings by the Invaders, Midwest Death Rattle, Into Arcadia, various compilation albums throughout the world and the soon to be released Uptown Savages Album.

Mary was amazing teacher for me, and she really sparked my passion for music. I had really just started clarinet when I began taking lessons from her, and I truly believe one of the reasons I am going into music is because of how she made me see it. In the short time that I was able to be her student I learned more than just the fundamentals, and have yet to find a teacher that I work with as well as I did with her. If I could take up lessons with her again, I would in a heartbeat.

Mary and I started working together after I co-founded a 60s soul/R&B/ska/reggae-beat band in which I sang vocals and was asked to play alto sax by the bandleader. I hadn't played sax in years (clarinet is my primary instrument), and among other things, I needed to start learning how to improvise - challenging for a symphonic band player whose head was always in sheet music. Mary's approach and teaching methods worked well for me; she's great at getting to know you as a player and your goals, and once she did that for me, she was immediately able to formulate a course of action. In the six months we were together, my tone, pitch, and playing improved, and my confidence grew. I heartily recommend Mary; no matter your instrument, she will get right down to business, keep you moving, and inject some fun into the whole process. A great player and entertainer, Mary has been a strong role model for me. I am grateful for everything I've learned from her, and I look forward to working with her again.

I am learning how to play and needed Ben to help me figure out what chords a song had in it. Ben was so patient and took the time to write down each one so that I could learn the song and practice it for a performance. He is a spectacular teacher and will help get you where you need to be as a musician.

Introduction to Proper Violin Posture
You may feel that learning the violin is all about playing the right notes at the right time. It is – to an extent. But in order to learn the various techniques and play for longer periods of time, there are other skills that every student needs to master too, and that includes proper violin posture. Because it affects all areas of violin playing, such as tone, intonation, bow hold and stroke, as well as shifting, all violin technique is built around proper violin posture. If you ignore or forg
