*** Lesson Details ***
All students who sign up for lessons will receive a basic fundamental foundation of musical knowledge. Once the fundamentals are understood and assessed, we can then begin to take a more in depth approach in reaching the student's specific goals as a musician. Aspiring songwriters, usually playing piano or guitar will have a different agenda than a high school saxophonist practicing for their state music assessments. Lessons are built around each student's specific interests.

It is important to know that your musical goals can be met with consistent practice, discipline, and dedication to your chosen instrument. So what is the most valuable and sometimes the most difficult skill musicians must learn and subscribe to? HOW to practice...and that will be the underlying theme to each and every lesson we share. The way we practice shapes us as musicians!

Remember that each time people hear you play or sing, you are only compared to the best there is. Smart practice makes perfect!

*** Studio Equipment ***
Parents may accompany students at lessons - sitting area in office / lesson studio room, or down stairs in living room. Electronic digital piano - 88 keys fully-weighted, music stands; iPad, Metronome, saxophones, clarinet, flute; books

*** Travel Equipment ***
Apple iPad, metronome

*** Specialties ***
Traditional methods for all instruments; begin with fundamentals while measuring consistent application of skills learned from week to week. For piano in addition to traditional methods, I also can teach a songwriter based course with more emphasis on chord structures, ear training, and chart writing. I also place a big emphasis on HOW to practice rather than just how often.

It is obvious that Dave has a lot of training, experience and strength in teaching piano. He made my son feel at ease and had a lot of tools for assessing my sons ability and skills and areas that needed development. While being encouraging, he was also able to develop a practice plan and strategy for helping my son to get better in a fun environment. My son left with a huge smile, saying he was excited and liked his new teacher.

Jerry S.

Goodlettsville, TN

About Jerry

Always wanted to learn to play piano? Now is the time!

Hi, my name is Jerry and I am an experienced, patient, gentle teacher, with over 20 years teaching and performing experience. I teach all ages, beginners to more advanced students. Learn to read musical notation, chord symbols and play by ear. Learn your favorite songs.

I have a B.A. in Music Education and plenty of real world experience.
• Private teaching: Scores of students over the last 20 years.
• Public School System: Over 5 years teaching music (K-12) in the Chicago area.
• Performance: Decades as a band member, lead
er and solo performer. I have worked with Herbie Hancock, Mary Wells, Greg Kihn and Jessie Colin Young, to name a few.
• I am currently performing every Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday from 6-9 p.m. at Woody’s Steakhouse in Madison. Stop by and say hello. I’d love to talk with you.

Self-motivation is your greatest ally. I want to help you become motivated and fall in love with the piano.

Beginners can expect to work from “method books”. There are a number of authors available and all are designed to help in learning musical notation, theory, vocabulary, technique, etc. I like to add selections from my own library and encourage the use of various web sites that offer free chord charts, lyrics and tutorials on learning a specific song.

Make 2016 the year you finally learn to play! Music is a beautiful mystery waiting to be unraveled. Let’s get started!

My 9 year old daughter has been taking lessons with Jerry for almost one year now. This year we have added our 7 year old son. My children ABSOLUTELY LOVE Jerry. Last Christmas she was playing Christmas songs for the entire family and everybody loved it. He is patient and my kids look forward to each lesson. I would highly recommend him to anybody who wants their kids to have fun and learn something as beautiful as playing the piano.

James W.

Hendersonville, TN

About James

I worked for Eddie Van Halen for five years in the 1990's in the Beverly Hills area of Los Angeles and was instrumental in providing help with development of the Peavey Wolfgang and Wolfgang Special Guitar by providing feedback on the prototypes Eddie was designing at the time. I learned a lot from Eddie and his brother Alex about music and the music industry. (All you have to do is pay attention! ) I have played in bands from Hollywood to Toronto and back both as a singer songwriter and guitarist. I bring the Musicians Institute way to the table and get things up and running quickly. I help s
tudents get it under their fingers fast and get it right the first time.

I believe in sharing the happiness of making music with anyone who loves music and the guitar in particular. I do my very best to get you playing the songs you love in Pop, Rock, Jazz and Folk Music of your choice. Today's modern new guitars are easy to play and you will enjoy learning Guitar right away. That is how it should be.
When you study there is a basic understanding of Guitar to be learned that allows an ease of use for anyone for years to come. This will help you reach your goal and improve each week. My students learn to practice in a way that feels comfortable and makes sense. This takes all the stress out of learning and gives everyone something to smile about and look forward to each week.

The good feeling of playing along with friends and taking a solo is within every students grasp. I will show you the way there. And with a solid and straightforward approach to the theory as it applies directly to the guitar you will feel confident and unafraid of any music endeavor. We'll cover harmony and fingerboard theory and give you a road map of the guitar neck that makes it a pleasure to play. You learn the basics and much more than you thought possible retaining 90 percent of what you learn!

Having been a student myself I was deeply involved in music since age 12 and played in bands and duos for over 15 years . I can help you to be a well rounded player and performer with a smile, a laugh and a joy for music whether your in a band or a budding solo artist.

*** Lesson Details ***
Most students want to play the Guitar to play their favorite songs and I'm the same way. Music is something we carry with us in our hearts and minds. Students will learn what they wish to learn and work at a pace that is comfortable to them. Whether you are a student, “weekend warrior” or a parent whose child has expressed an interest in Guitar anyone can learn all there is to know about Harmony and Theory for the Guitar and how to play their favorite songs.

We cover theory in an easy and straightforward no nonsense way in the first half of each lesson and then apply it to the song you wish to learn. This creates an atmosphere where you understand and feel at home with the Guitar. You get an understanding right away and because it is immediately fun it allows you to feel comfortable at any level. Music is fun, and songs are the creative expression of what we feel. Combining theory and the freedom to play and sing songs allows us to express ourselves through music.
After 6 months students will have a solid foundation in theory, and a road map of the guitar fretboard enabling them to advance to an intermediate level if they are ready to do so. Students will know enough that music as it relates to the Guitar, which is the world’s most popular instrument in contemporary music, is not a mystery but is a welcome friend. And they will be able to play songs by popular artists and advance at a pace that is satisfying and enjoyable.

What James spouse says about working on songwriting with him:

"James is my husband for over 10 years now. Over the years, I have seen James give guidance and counsel to many hopeful musicians of all ages, and inspire others about how music influences and benefits our lives. I would highly recommend James to anyone who wants to learn guitar, voice, music theory, and acting. James is a great talent, and study with him would benefit anyone with the sincere desire to grow as an artist. When we married, I had fallen in love with James’ conversational style, and his vast knowledge of music. When I heard him play guitar, I knew that I wanted to write songs with him, and we released our first album, in 2012 on iTunes."

Lauren D.

Nashville, TN

About Lauren

Lauren D began playing the violin at the age of six, starting her studies with the Suzuki method in Aurora, IL. She moved with her family to Vero Beach, FL, in 2007, and studied privately with Linda Spiwak while pursuing other local musical opportunities. In 2008, she won the Yeehaw Junction Fiddle Contest. In 2013, Lauren graduated from Vero Beach High School, after serving as concertmaster of the Vero Beach High School Orchestra for two years. As a dedicated violin student, she won three concerto competitions at VBHS. In addition, Lauren was involved with the Treasure Coast Youth Symphon
y during her senior year of high school, from whom she received a grant and scholarship. She attended Eastern Music Festival in the summer of 2011, where she worked with virtuosos such as New York Philharmonic concertmaster, Glenn Dicterow. During her time in Vero Beach, Lauren launched and promoted "Random Acts of Music", by busking around town and playing for various businesses and outdoor restaurants within her community. Lauren was the leader of the classical string quartet, “Seaside Strings” her senior year of high school, which regularly performed for weddings and charitable events, and folk fiddle trio, "Elle & the Rootabega Boys". In 2012, after attending the concert of nationally acclaimed violinist, Elmar Oliveira, Lauren was referred by him to study with his violin student, Anna Tsukervanik, who well prepared her for various auditions and performances. Throughout her high school career, she hosted a series of "jams" in her home, teaching students fiddle tunes and allowing for musical interaction outside of the competitive classroom environment. Lauren also worked closely with the Atlantic Classical Orchestra, and assisted in bringing a group of high school orchestra students to concerts, where they would volunteer to feed the musicians and interact with them before the performances.

Lauren is currently a student at Belmont University in Nashville, Tennessee, studying as a Classical Violin Performance major. She is a member of the Belmont Symphony Orchestra, and studies with Juilliard graduate and protege of Dorothy Delay, Elisabeth Small. Lauren aspires to continue in her pursuit of mastering her instrument, and make a career of performing in chamber ensembles. She hopes to continue the legacy of the musical voices before her, bringing her passion for music and performing to cultures around the world.

Lauren is an excellent instructor. Before we began lessons Lauren spent time asking what I wanted to learn and where I hoped to go with the violin. This enabled her to direct the lessons to my goals. She developed lessons that were both fun and challenging at my skill level. I felt I improved each week. Excellent teacher.
