Flutist, Roberta M., is equally at home playing classical and new music. I Care If You Listen has extolled her “lush, full tones… even among the best professionals, not many flute players sound so compelling in a lower register.” Praising her “extreme adventurousness,” New York Concert Review said she “riveted with her performance, inspiring one to want a repeated hearing.” Roberta is a founding member of the Cadillac Moon Ensemble, a quartet of unusual instrumentation dedicated to commissioning and performing new works. To date, the group has commissioned over fifty pieces.

Roberta holds a
Bachelor of Music with highest honors from the University of Colorado at Boulder, a Master of Music from SUNY-Purchase College, and Doctor of Musical Arts from the City University of New York Graduate Center. *** Lesson Details ***
In my studio, I believe that my role is to steer students toward a deeper understanding of themselves, their instrument, and their relationship to music. I tailor my teaching to the needs of my individual students, who currently range from age 4 to adult, often adding improvisation and extended techniques to increase my students’ awareness of the potential of the flute as a channel for one’s creativity.

With over a decade of teaching and a doctorate in flute performance, I have extensive experience teaching flute lessons and recorder lessons to students from beginners to advanced. I teach at my studio in Brooklyn or can come to your home in New York City. I have previously taught in Colorado, Westchester, NY, and throughout New York City. I've been on faculty at The Harmony Program and the Denver Public School’s Saturday Music Program, where I taught beginning flute classes to public school children. I have given masterclasses at the University of Southern Maine and the Pittsburgh Creative and Performing Arts High School, and have taught music classes at Purchase College and Hostos Community College.

*** Studio Equipment ***
I have a studio with music stands, flutes, recorders, an upright piano, and place for parents to wait. Street parking is available, and I'm less than a block from the subway.

Students are expected to bring their instrument, music, and a notebook.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I bring my flute. Students need to have a music stand, music, a notebook, and a working instrument.

*** Specialties ***
I am well-versed in all areas of classical music, especially new music. My primary instrument is flute, but I also enjoy teaching beginner piano, recorder, and music theory.

I've taken three lessons with Roberta so far, and it's been awesome! I've played flute in middle and high school, but after taking a break through college I thought it'd be good to pick it back up as a hobby in the city. She's been really great with helping me improve my tone and has a lot of knowledge. I'm excited to build my repertoire with her!

Personal Statement

I believe that progressive teaching must employ constructive pedagogical strategies to foster meaningful musical experiences for students to build and to exhibit competence. My pedagogical model is comprised of a student-centered approach to produce attainable challenges and to affect affirmative changes that will physically, technically, and emotionally enrich each student's performance.

During instruction, I exercise scaffolding methods to facilitate the students' zone of proximal development and innovative questioning to augment students' cognitive thinking and cri

Currently, I prepare my students for singing auditions on Broadway and off-Broadway productions, CCM Singing Competitions, Commercials, Musical Theatre Productions, The Voice, X-Factor, American Idol, Specialized Performance Schools, College Music Performances, and Choirs. A number of my piano students prepare for the NYSSMA and ABRSM examinations. Fay is such an amazing teacher! I got into Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School thanks to her. Best Teacher I've had, she helps train your voice and goes through the vocal anatomy so you understand techniques such as proper breathing, posture, coordination, grounding, acting, diction...etc. I've been her student for about a year three years now and I have to say that my voice has improved so much as a performer all thanks to her! If you get the chance, at least take a class, you will not regret it!

Nothing but good things to say about Brendon. Aside from his insane talent as a composer and musician, he was phenom with our son Max. A few thoughts below...

We knew Brendon was the right person to help our son Max on day one with TakeLessons, when we wrote to 4 or 5 potential instructors. The other folks wrote back and just said 'sure, I'm here, happy to help'. But Brendon wrote back with thoughts about the pieces Max needed to learn for his audition, a rough outline of a plan, and shared enough about himself that we knew he had truly 'heard' what we needed were looking for. That kind of thoughtfulness is unique.

Brendon is great with kids, and created instant rapport with Max over the video lessons. Brendon will always spend a little extra time than budgeted, which is appreciated. And his scheduling was flexible which always helps with us busy families. We did a few in person lessons and Max came away inspired - for classical guitar but also for music in general. Max's skills grew throughout, and he never resisted practicing; he looked forward to the lessons and the chance to talk about some guitar-related thing with Brendon.

Brendon isn't a big disciplinarian so after a few weeks I had a little chat with Max about what it means to respect your teacher, even if they seem young and cool and are on video. That's something I think parents need to monitor a little.

Recommended w/o any hesitation. If you have Brendon in mind you're headed in the right direction for sure. -MR

I have been working with Brendon for about 2 years now. He is not only incredibly knowledgeable about all aspects of guitar (composition, scales, classical pieces, finger-strengthening exercises, etc.), he is also an incredibly patient and dedicated instructor who really listens to the student's needs and helps fill them. His repertoire of songs, exercises, and general guitar knowledge have helped me understand the instrument in a multitude of different ways. I have had many guitar instructors before, but never someone who was so incredibly flexible and patient and willing to help when it comes to someone who has a busy schedule who is still interested in learning a complex instrument. He's definitely the best instructor I've ever had, and I look forward to continuing to work with him for a long time.
