April S.

Bronx, NY

About April

I'm a 'classically trained' voice teacher with extensive training in dance and drama;
a liberal arts degree from Columbia University/Master of Arts Education from City College of NY.
Before settling into a music career, worked as a dance instructor, for the City of NY and received congrats from John Lindsey, then mayor, for outstanding achievement.
As an actor, performed in several off-Broadway plays and was a principal in the “Broadway tour”, ”Pulitzer prize ” winning play, “No Place to be Somebody.” I've performed through the years as a vocalist with a trio and as a ONE WOMAN SHOW a
t various night spots, concert halls and social events. As a voice coach I've had the good fortune to teach the skills and techniques of the art of singing.
Singing is the joy I share as a performer and as a teacher. Anyone can learn to sing; and do it on a superior level. It takes desire and the willingness to practice the skills necessary until the goal is achieved.
The journey is worth it!

WORKSHOP FOR LEARNING TO SING
COMPETENCY: A SOLID FOUNDATION IN THE BASICS OF SINGING
OBJECTIVE: Students will learn 5 Basic Components of Singing and demonstrate via public (by choice) performance; at the end of course.
1. Pitch
2. Rhythm
3. Breath
4. Voice
5. Diction
Pitch
Tone is the use of pitch in language to distinguish words. All languages use intonation to express emphasis, contrast, emotion, or other such nuances.
Pitch refers to the notes and sounds that we hear when someone sings, and it determines if the song is going to sound great or not. The singer will have to hit various pitches in a song with a relative amount of accuracy in order to be in tune with the overall music accompaniment and harmonies.
RHYTHM
Every song has a certain beat, and it is essential that we keep to the basic rhythm of the song, or else we might find that we are constantly trying to catch up with the lyrics or always lagging behind. Rhythm also determines the groove of the song, and this is what gets us on our feet and dancing when we listen to upbeat or fast tempo songs.
A great sense of rhythm begins with learning to recognize various beat duration, to vocalize notes with different beats, as well as to be able to keep to the basic tempo of a song.
BREATH CONTROL
Breathing is an essential component of singing, and is what most singing instructors would introduce to students during their first lesson for singing. It is also what most people would want to learn about and also ask questions about.
Breathing is a natural process, and it is not difficult to achieve better breath control for singing. A great breath foundation is needed for singing!
VOICE
To produce great sounds when singing it is essential to adopt beneficial singing habits in order to produce sounds that are more relaxed and healthy.
DICTION
Learning how to produce sound with our voice is not enough. We still need to shape our voice, and form words in a language that our audience will understand.
This is why diction is also one of the vital basics of singing, because it determines whether our audience understands what we are singing, and whether we are able to connect with them through our song. Diction is also a key factor towards hitting the correct pitches, especially for the high notes, and this will be explained in detail.

COURSE OUTLINE:
Lesson 1 PITCH
How to avoid the most common singing mistakes that prevent singers from producing a clean and professional vocal tone.
Objective: Students will learn warm up exercises that strengthen vocal cords and loosen the muscles needed to produce a professional sound./ the importance of singing ‘scales’ to achieve this objective.
Lesson 2 RHYTHM
Rhythms often used in various standard songs.
Objective: Students will listen and learn to identify rhythms used in songs. CD player provided.
Students will learn to tap out the various types of rhythm.
Students will sing a favorite song; using rhythms learned in class.
Lesson 3 BREATH
For the purpose of voice projection, students will learn to breath more from the diaphragm, the muscles beneath the ribcage, as well as the abdominal muscles.
Objective: Students will learn vital techniques to create a connected voice blending head, chest and diaphragm.
Lesson 5 DICTION
How to use the emotions, enunciation and clarity.
Objective: Students will learn to sing a favorite song with focus on elements of singing.
Lesson 6 Review of previous 5 lessons.
Lesson 7 Group/Individual Performances
Objective: Students will show confidence in employing elements from training.
Lessons 8/9/10 Rehearsal for recital TBA
*Each lesson to begin with a brief review of previous. Copies of previous lessons/homework assignments to be distributed at each meeting

I just completed my 3rd lesson with April and is impressed with her dedication to ensure I achieve my goal. She takes time to breakdown the lessons and how each will help me in its own way. She loves what she does which is a consolation to anyone wanting to improve their vocal ability. I have started to become area of how I breathe and ways in which I can improve. I would recommend her highly to anyone wanting to take singing to the next level.

Matt L.

Brooklyn, NY

About Matt

Matt has enjoyed working and teaching as a professional musician for at least 15+ years. He began studying music and playing the saxophone at age 11. He currently lives and works in the New York City area after moving there from Philadelphia in early 2001, after graduating from the University of the Arts in Philadelphia in 1999 with a Bachelors in Music.

Throughout his musical career, Matt has performed and worked in a variety of capacities including as a composer and recording studio engineer. His main area of expertise is performing as a jazz saxophonist on alto, tenor, and soprano saxoph
ones, and he regularly plays throughout New York City in restaurants and jazz clubs.

Matt's area of expertise in teaching is beginner to advanced studies on the saxophone, beginner to intermediate studies on the flute and the clarinet, music theory, and jazz improvisation for any instrument. Whether he is teaching saxophone, flute, or clarinet, his teaching approach places emphasis on giving the student an in depth understanding of his or her instrument. He puts the utmost importance on explaining advanced concepts in the simplest of terms in order to insure that the student fully comprehends the objectives of each lesson. Such concepts that he covers regularly and places importance on are sight-reading, ear-training, and creativity.

As a regularly performing musician in New York City, Matt can be seen every Sunday night at Ba'sik (a new and very popular bar in Williamsburg Brooklyn) where he leads the open jazz jam session. A few of his adult students have even been able to reach a level in jazz improvisation that they've been able to come out and sit in with the band.

In addition to teaching woodwind instruments and jazz improvisation, Matt also has experience teaching Sibelius music writing software, and audio engineering with Pro-tools LE and Logic Pro.

PLEASE NOTE: Because the NYC area is very different geographically from other parts of the country, especially in terms of transportation, I may appear outside of your area in terms of where I am available to travel. If you are very interested in taking lessons with me, but you are outside of my travel zone, please feel free to follow up with a Takelessons counselor and have them contact me personally to see if we might make an exception. I am available to travel to virtually all areas of Queens, Brooklyn, and Manhattan as well as Jersey City and Hoboken. if my location in Williamsburg Brooklyn is not convenient for you, and you are unable to have lessons in your home, then there is also an option where I can most likely find a very affordable teaching studio in an area that is more convenient for you that we may rent by the hour and split the cost for your lesson.

*** Lesson Details ***
Matt believes that any student, regardless of age or experience level, learns best when engaged in an activity that he or she understands and enjoys. Part of his success as a teacher can be attributed to his willingness to take into account every student's particular musical interests and strengths, and in tern, he teaches directly to those areas. For instance, in the initial stages of developing a student and teacher relationship, Matt requests that the student compile a "wish list" of approximately ten pieces of music that he or she would like to be able to play. This list may include pieces in such genres as classical, jazz, and popular music, just to name a few. It is through this list that the student can begin almost immediately learning exactly what he or she likes, and by default, Matt can then teach the student all of the technical components needed to perform on his or her instrument, as well as determine the specific areas where the student needs to receive more focused instruction. More importantly, this "thinking outside of the box," customized approach provides a fun atmosphere and enables the student to enjoy learning the art of playing music by not being solely dependent on instructional booklets which many students, regardless of age and experience, find boring and tedious.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Additional saxophones for students who do not currently have a saxophone to use during a lesson. Recording equipment, including software and microphones. Mac book pro with music writing and recording software. Full 88 key keyboard.

*** Travel Equipment ***
Additional saxophones. Macbook pro with recording and music writing software

Barbee M.

North Bergen, NJ

About Barbee

GREAT NEWS! The studio in Bergen County is now available for lessons again! Please select your subject and location (to the right) to see specific availability.

Welcome to my teacher profile! My name is Barbee and I am an active professional classical singer with over nine years of piano and voice teaching experience. I enjoy teaching both children and adults. Check out my specialities and see if you think we'd be a good fit! Then, feel free to click "Ask Barbee a Question" if you'd like more information from me!

Both voice and piano lessons are based on a foundation of healthy technique
while incorporating musicianship skills and encouraging the student to develop their own creativity. While my focus as a performer is opera and other classical music, I am experienced in teaching Broadway/musical theater, pop, rock, R&B, folk, and other styles and genres. I encourage my students to explore new styles and apply good technique to any style they may choose to sing or play.

I also specialize in helping prepare singers for auditions for college, performing arts schools, choirs, musicals, and competitions. As an active performer myself I have auditioned many, MANY times for different organizations. I have also been on "the other side of the table" and I know what qualities audition panels are looking for. Several of my current and former students have been accepted to college music programs, performing arts magnet schools, audition-only choirs, and theater programs to continue their studies. Let me help you show your best qualities at your audition!

As a member of both NATS (National Association for Teachers of Singing) and ACDA (American Choral Directors Association) I am constantly working to improve my teaching skills by keeping up with the latest pedagogical research. I love sharing new tips and techniques with my students!

I strive to create a lesson environment that is open and honest, where my students are never afraid to ask questions or try something new. I am always happy to explain concepts in a different way and I encourage improvisation and creativity in addition to healthy technique and strong musicianship.

In-home lesson equipment requirements:
Voice: Piano (preferred) or keyboard; music stand(s); full-length mirror (preferred).

Barbee is an excellent teacher. She is prompt, professional, courteous, and knowledgeable. From the beginning, my daughter felt comfortable with her. Barbee was nothing short of phenomenal, from the way she identified areas of weakness, to the helpful bits of advice. She pushed my daughter to do her best. I originally booked 5 lessons with Barbee, but we loved what she did for my daughter so much that we booked another five. We wish we could do more, but our hectic schedule won't allow it at this time. We will, however, keep Barbee in mind should time allow us to use her services again. Don't think twice about selecting Barbee for singing lessons!

So far with Barbee has been a fantastic experience, she is a really talented and patient teacher and performer, she is humorous which is good, you don't want a teacher that is serious all the time, although she can get serious when needed.

Just after the first lesson I could see this teacher is for me. She is knowledgeable, patient and willing to find out what it is exactly I'm looking for in pursuing guitar lessons after a long hiatus. She found a great Beatles song for me to practice just a little beyond my level, as well as asked me to send an original song of mine that I would like to work on - since this is my goal. She was easy to relate to and she gave great advice about how to play bar cords easier. I am excited about going forward and further lessons. Thanks Concetta!
