The main thing that I like to remind students of, when they take lessons with me, is that music is FUN! A lot of hard work goes into it, but the end result is always rewarding! I am a pretty laid back teacher, yet I still work to inspire my students to try their hardest and to be the best that they can be at what they do. It is very important to me that my students get their musical wants AND needs fulfilled.

In my lessons we will work on a variety of topics, including:

-Gaining a feel and command for your own instrument.

-Finding your SOUND: Helping you to produce the right tones on your instrument.

-EXERCISES: Scales, Etudes, etc. to strengthen the muscles being utilized while playing, and also to build up muscle memory and accuracy.

-Music Theory and Ear-Training

-Building your repertoire, which is necessary for performance.

-Arranging and Communication with your accompanying musicians.

-Exercising variation and creativity through improvisation.

-How to ...

About Makala
I have loved music as long as I can remember. I know its cliche© to say so, but it's true! :)

For me, having parents of different ethnicity and siblings that were much older than me, I was heavily impacted by the wide variety of music to which my family members listened. The force of this crayon box of rhythms and sounds captivated and affected me so much that it is the key experience that I draw from in making my own music today.

I grew up in Fairbanks, Alaska (a small town in the center of the state) so my only option for entertainment and fun was getting involved in the arts! I started performing at a very young age as both a dancer and a musician. I studied classical ballet, modern dance, hip hop and street dance, and world dance traditions throughout my formative years, which helped me to gain rhythmical fluency. I started my
formal music training when I began to play the cello. From then on, I was hooked on the sound and I immersed myself in music as much as I could; performing, competing, working in as many musical groups and productions as possible (as both a vocalist and cellist), and even teaching.

I moved to Seattle in 2003 to study opera at Cornish College of the arts, only to later change my major to Jazz, and then again to Latin music studies. Since graduating from Cornish in 2007, with my Bachelor of Music degree, I have been actively and diligently working in the local music scene; performing and recording with artists and groups of many different styles. Everything from various Latin genres, to Rock, to R&B/Soul, to Hip Hop, and Jazz. Through my music, I aim to reach out to people of all cultures. I also aim to teach my own students with the hope that they too can discover the same continuous love of music that I have grown to feel (and still am growing to feel) over the years. :)

*** Studio Equipment ***
88 key piano, cello, various percussion instruments, guitars, ukulele, library, computer, lessons are given in a private studio.

*** Specialties ***
As far as voice goes, I teach all genres and styles but I personally specialize in the Latin genres. I teach all aspects of the music; rhythm, harmony, theory. I even teach performance; how to work with a band in real-time communication, song communication (or story telling as I like to call it), and developing ones own personal style. I believe that there is much more to singing than just vocal technique alone, so I believe in teaching musical fundamentals and functions so that my students will not only be considered vocalists, but competent musicians.

Makala hit it off with our third-grader right off the bat, and she was a great sport about meeting the whole family at the first lesson. She put Josh at ease, evaluated what he already knew without making him uncomfortable, and got right to work improving his fundamentals in a way that seemed to get him really motivated. We're extending our series - thanks Makala!

Let's get you started on your new guitar path!

About Abby
My name is Abby, and I've been playing guitar for about 15 years now. I graduated from Musician's Institute in 2007, and since then, I have had a great deal of experience teaching guitar to kids and adults, both individually and in groups.

I've spent three summers in a row teaching at Camp Jam and Day Jams, and I had the pleasure of being the Camp Jam kids director of the Orange County location in 2008. They were both great experiences . I have spent he last couple summers teaching School of Rock summer camps which was also a really fun time.

I love helping students find their passion for music and the creative process. I have been teaching at my current music school for about two years, and privately for about 6 years.

I have studied and taught many different styles of guitar, as well as note reading and theory. You could
say I'm a rock player at heart, but I love all styles.

I am currently not traveling to homes for lessons, but I am still taking students who are able and willing to come to my location.

I'm a versatile guitarist with 8 years of teaching experience ranging from the elderly to the very young and everything in between.

My philosophy is to inspire the student. Growing up, I quit various instruments because my teachers failed to give me the tools that I needed to go home and have fun practicing. Giving the student these tools, no matter their age or experience level is my number one goal.

About Benjamin
Hi!

My name is Ben, and I can't wait to start playing guitar with you. I have been playing since age 14, and am a recent college graduate. Most of professional experience is as a jazz guitarist, but I have spent a good part of my career playing rock, funk, blues, and folk. Whatever your style and experience is, I would love to work with you to make you a better guitarist and musician. My number one goal is to inspire the student by giving them tools to start having fun in the practice room as soon as possible.

Ben is very talented and very knowledgeable. He was open to covering whatever I was looking to do and has helped me learn some of the basics of soloing on an electric guitar (maj/min scales, pentatonic scales, arpeggios, etc.). Ben has a nice setup in his apartment for lessons and I would recommend him as an instructor.

My love has always been rock guitar so that's what you'll get with me; hard rock, country rock, rock and roll, rockabilly... you get the idea. Beginners need to learn to crawl before they can rock but everything learned will be for a definite purpose and not just because that's how it's always been done. Intermediate students will learn the guitar parts from a variety of songs in order to develop manual dexterity and a develop a basis for learning theory. Advanced students help develop their own curriculum.

About Ed
I have played the guitar my entire life and never lost my love for it (even when I tried!). I have a bachelor's degree in guitar from Wichita State University where I studied with jazz guitar legend Jerry Hahn (Rolling Stone magazine called him one of the top 3 jazz guitarists in the world). From there I traveled to Hollywood, CA where I attended G.I.T. at the Musicians Institute. I spent several years travelling the Pacific Northwest with different rock bands before settling down to a career in financial services and becoming a husband and father.

I've loved guitar since I remember ever seeing one. This love has led me to become skilled as a guitarist, and much later, as a teacher. Since taking on my first students, I've developed a teaching philosophy that is based not in a regiment of books and exercises, but rather in making music right away and getting deep into the material that the student wishes to learn. With younger students who may have not have a developed taste, I love to share clips of various American and non-American music.

About Ronan
Since graduating college, teaching as been a greatly fulfilling part of my life. From teaching complete beginners to older students hungry to deepen their knowledge of music, I've found a way to tailor lessons to anyone that's ever come to me for lessons. I believe in listening to what the student is interested and passionate about, and then guiding them into new territory .

"My mission is to strengthen individuals by helping them build confidence, self esteem, and identity through the gift of music!

About Joshua
ABOUT ME:
My name is Joshua Turner, I have been singing and playing instruments for over 10 years. I have been trained in the styles of rock, pop, blues, R&B, folk, classical, and opera. I got my vocal training from the prestigious Berklee College of Music in Boston where I studied voice. I was trained by the best vocal teachers in the country and I have lots of Berklee curriculum to base my teachings off of. I also attended Musicians Institute for guitar study.

MY TEACHING STYLE:
My teaching style is very simple and to the point, the goal is to learn how to use your instrument. I don't like to get too technical about it because it can actually slow your progression down if you do. The simplest way that I was taught to sing is that "if it hurts, you are singing wrong." That is why vocal exercises are so important to keep your voice stro
ng so you can build stamina and avoid pain, I also have audio vocal exercises that I can provide. I don't like to put people down while they are learning because I know that singing and playing an instrument is a really sensitive thing and that could cause the singer or musician to stop singing or playing completely, which defeats the whole purpose. I have experience in all forms of music from live rock shows, to teaching music in pre-schools. I teach confidence!

THE BENEFITS OF MY MUSIC LESSONS:

-Higher self esteem

-Better grades

-More confidence

-Stronger social skills

-And so much more!

You are actually learning all of the above things, while simultaneously learning your instrument! If you follow the lesson plan that I provide you, my GUARANTEE is that you will become a noticeably better musician and singer and unlock a new found confidence within 4 lessons (1 month).

MUSIC EDUCATION:
Musicians Institute- Guitar Performance (April- November 2010)
Berklee College of Music- Vocal Performance (September 2007- May 2009)

AWARDS:

One of my goals in teaching is to instill 'ownership' in the student; in addition to teaching the fundamentals(chords, strumming/playing technique), I ask them if they have a favorite song that they would like to learn. If they like the songs they are working on, they will have more fun in their lessons.
I do stress practice each day---25 minutes max. I don't want to overwhelm the student with long practice times---consistent daily shorter times work better for the student in my opinion.

About Gary
My name is Gary; I've been playing acoustic guitar for 35+years; I love to as I put it, "play the songs I grew up with." That means I play the songs I've always loved---in my early years up to the present. I play the coffeehouse and community festival circuit, playing the music of James Taylor and other artists of that era up to the present. My goal is to have you play the songs you like, too….you'll never forget them once you learn!
