Kerry is awesome! He is a very nice guy and patient. He will not only tailor the lesson to you best learning style, He will also personalize it to your music taste to keep you motivated and wanting to learn. He took the time to get to know me as a student and it’s paying off, learning guitar was very dry alone but with Kerry’s help I am not only learning some of my favorite songs but I am also learning the theory behind them and expanding my musical taste. If you have the opportunity to take one of his lessons do it!! You will leave with a much better understanding of music.

Kerry is an awesome instructor! He's professional for starters. He adheres to the time that is set and/or communicates if it requires otherwise. He is great at setting a child and parent at ease. His level of knowledge and experience is exceptional. One can tell he really loves his craft. He chose to teach my 3 year old when most instructors wouldn't because of his age given that my son wasn't 5 years of age. My little one enjoys the lesson, therefore I enjoy the lesson. He also encourages parents to get involved with the lesson. Overall, I am enjoying the investment and will continue as long as my child is willing to learn and Kerry is willing to teach. Parents should know that going with this instructor wouldn't be a waste.

About Debbie
Having been a public school teacher, as well as a private and group piano instructor, I've observed how differently students "digest" information, and piano lessons are a great way to make use of different learning styles. I emphasize knowing HOW to practice before you leave so you'll be successful at home, and you are welcome to contact me with problems during the week so you don't lose a week in progressing with your lessons. I've had students send a video of a tricky section to ask for alternative fingering, and photos to clarify how they are reading something!! I also perform with an orchestra and want to feel proficient among my peers, so I really know how it feels to make a mistake in front of everyone. I am here to help you feel proud of your progress.
My primary teaching objective is to have fun as I assist you on this wonderf
ul journey into music!

*** Lesson Details ***
I truly have fun making and teaching music. We celebrate all successes. Even the overcoming of the smallest "hiccups"!
There are games to make my students secure with the many concepts of music reading. I encourage improvisation and ensemble playing. We can add rhythm tracks to "jazz" up our scales and finger builders. Students can accompany with chords or melodic harmonies. I assign exercises to build finger flexibility, strength, fluidity and independence; Pencil work to master theory and reading skills; Pieces that contain the ideas we are focused upon; and pieces to add to your repertoire.

*** Studio Equipment ***
At my Home Studio,You will be playing on my 5'1" Knabe grand piano! I also have electronic keyboards. On occasion you may find yourself playing on my marimba - a definite pitch percussion instrument - like a giant xylophone. We often rehearse our rhythms on my variety of world drums! There are chairs available for guests.
Also, I share my home with my pet cats - so if you are allergic, I'd be happy to consider coming to your home for your lessons.

*** Travel Equipment ***
An electronic keyboard with full-sized keys or a tuned piano must be available along with a proper height stool, bench or chair. A music stand for the books and good lighting is also needed. The family must agree that the 'lesson space' deserves to be quiet with no distractions. I can also bring one of my keyboards to use for duets, accompanying and improvising. Should there be another student (or potential student) in the home, they can use the extra keyboard with headphones for guided practice and creativity. Percussion students - primarily- mallets, would be better served at my home using my marimba. However, those who have bell kits could be taught in their home, with the possibility of using my marimba as an incentive.

*** Specialties ***
I am fortunate to have an extensive collection of piano method books and solos that I make available as part of my lending library. From it I can reinforce a concept or reward an accomplishment with an "oldie, but goodie" from John Thompson or Schaum, without having to charge the parents for another piece. For my beginning piano students of elementary school age, I have used the Robert Pace, Bastien, Faber & Faber and Schaum series. With adults, I invite them into the decision depending on what their experience is and what they would like to be able to perform one year from now. With transfer students, I have asked them to play their favorites from the lesson books they own, (and I ask them to evaluate their proficiency)- then we discuss where to go from there. Often it is positive to stay at the same level but use different literature so they can become comfortable with my style of explanations and expectations. This encourages a relationship where the student feels like they do know what they were taught and 'cements' those skills as a foundation for our moving forward together. I have a CD player handy for the books that include recorded tracks to go along with a learned piece.

About Troy
Composer Troy W. graduated from the New England Conservatory, earning his Bachelors, Masters (cum laude) and Graduate Diploma while studying with mentor Malcolm Peyton. After spending a year studying with Lukas Foss in Boston, Mr. W. moved to Houston in 2001 where he continued graduate studies at Rice University's Shepherd School of Music.

During his time as a teacher with the Michael P. Hammond Preparatory Program at Rice University's Shepherd School of Music, Troy taught classes in music fundamentals and music theory for pre-college students. He has also served on the faculty of the Summer Institute for Piano teaching courses in Form & Analysis for pre-college students.

Troy also has maintained a private studio, tutoring and teaching private lessons in composition, ear training, voice, piano, literature, and history for over ten
years. Students who have studied with him come from a wide range of backgrounds with different goals. Those who have continued with musical studies in college have consistently placed out of at least the first two semesters of music theory and achieved advanced placement in their chosen fields of study. Those who chose a different path continue to benefit from the education and training they received from taking music lessons.

*** Lesson Details ***
There is no "standard formula" to lessons. Each student has their own unique background, needs, and goals. Lessons tend to be somewhat casual but are structured in such a way as to meet the unique requirements of the student.

To accomplish your goals, there are a few requirements and basic expectations that the student and parent must meet.
The first is practice. Students are expected to practice daily for at least the length of their lesson time. This, above all else, is essential to progress. It is also expected that a parent will attend lessons for students who are too young to drive themselves here. It's important for a parent to guide the student's practice time (particularly for younger students) to ensure that the most is gained from it. This is why I ask that a parent observe lessons.
Each student or parent should bring to each lesson a notebook, pencils (with erasers). The notebook will be used to record notes about each lesson, homework, practice advice, etc. Pencils (not pens...nobody's perfect!) are used by composers to record their creations and performers to mark their music. Both of these essential practices are subject to changing thought and must be open to change. So no ink, please!

Performers: It is not necessary to know how to read music at the first lesson for beginners. However, learning to read is required for subsequent lessons and will be a large focus for all non-readers. Lessons are not learned "by ear." A certain amount of theory will be a part of every lesson just as technique and repertoire. Concerning repertoire, it will be selected based on the student's learning needs but also with their input. The main emphasis on performance lessons, however, will be technique and reading. Students should come to the first lesson prepared to discuss their background & goals and the plan of their course of study.
Note: Voice students must be at least 16 years of age.

Composers: Just as with performers, it is not necessary to know how to read music at the first lesson. However, learning to read is required for subsequent lessons. Many young composers have great ideas but can only hear them in their heads or play them on an instrument. Lessons will allow you to obtain the skills to write them down with greater speed, accuracy, and clarity. More advance students will also include exploring a wider range of harmonic languages, advanced notation, instrumentation, orchestration, and aural skills. Students should come to the first lesson with examples of their work, either written, notated, or recorded in a digital format. They should be prepared to discuss their background & goals and the plan of their course of study.

IMPORTANT NOTES:
• To reschedule a lesson, more than one day notice is required.

• Make up lessons must be scheduled before the next regular lesson.

• A make up lesson cannot be scheduled in place of a regular lesson.

• If, for any reason, two 30-minute lessons are scheduled one right after the other, they will be charged as two 30-minute lessons, not one 60 minute lesson which is a different rate.

• If, for any reason, two 45-minute lessons are scheduled one right after the other, they will be charged as two 45-minute lessons, not one 90 minute lesson which is a different rate.

• the studio space is also inhabited by two lovely cats. Do consider this when signing up for lessons.

Hello! My name is Jillian, I have been playing violin for 12 years, about to be 13 here shortly. I am a fun, energetic person who loves watching others succeed. My teaching style really depends on the student, I started teaching back in 2011, and had students from 3 to 50 that obviously needed different methods for learning. I modify every lesson plan specifically to the student, taking in to consideration what genre they like, and where they want to be with proficiency.

I love all genres of music, I started with classical, then branched to rock and popular songs with songs like Carry on my Wayward Son, Stairway to Heaven, Viva La Vida and then to movie scores such as Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, Jurassic Park, etc. I am a huge fan of music, and the healing and stress relieving powers it has.

Every student can succeed,
it's up to the teacher to put them in a position that they can and will prevail. Music should be fun for everyone!

About Edward
You may think it’s strange to talk about a story that is unrelated to music, but read on to find out why this story is important to Alex’s life as a music teacher. Alex has always been a curious guy. Having worn glasses for his entire life, Alex was interested to see what contacts were like. Usually, he would have just accepted what he was told. However, this time, he was determined to wear contacts. So, Alex attended a different eye doctor rather than his original doctor. Even then, he was told that he would not be able to wear contacts. But he was still determined to try them out. Surprisingly, the contacts worked! Little did Alex know that this would be the start of a different chapter in his life.

It was perhaps not surprising, then, that a new emphasis on education had begun to develop. Shortly afterwards, Alex accepted a new job
as a piano teacher at the Piano Studio. Using the lessons he had learned from his visit to the doctor, he started to form his philosophy on teaching. No matter what the challenges of the student, Alex will always strive to work through those challenges and do his best to successfully teach that student.

There have been a few piano beginners that have come by the Piano Studio that were assigned to Alex’s teaching roster. When they started, they were clearly some of the hardest beginners he has had to work with. One parent even remarked that her child would be impossible to teach. That parent was fortunately wrong! For months, now, this student follows Alex's instructions very clearly and has been paying attention every lesson. This is an example of how Alex's tenacity has paid off.

With a full studio of nearly twenty students per week while attending San Jacinto College, Alex stuck by with this principle of never giving up. Even when it seemed discouraging, he never gave up on any of his students as long as his students never give up on themselves. This, he believes, is what separates teachers who are passionate at their work, and teachers who just try to get by.

Currently, Alex teaches at a piano studio in Webster, TX, while attending the University of St. Thomas. Additionally, he performs weekly at a local Church as the staff organist and pianist.

Edward's a very patient teacher and accomplished pianist. I've played the piano a bit on my own, but he gave me a detailed orientation into the theoretical side and technical side of piano. He gives me a large plate of work every week, and expects me to do this work. My progress isn't immediate, but it's going smoothly and it IS progress. I would suggest Edward for both begginers berly learning and for experienced players trying to learn more. Don't be shy with him. He can be a bit qwerky, but there is a method to his madness.

He is also a very accomplished Piano, Trumpet & improviser, a very sensitive player and a very musical individual.

I haven’t taken lessons from Edward, but we have played together since high school band. I’ve seen him play in concerts as a soloist and he is very musical on both piano and trumpet. We also played a trumpet solo with piano accompaniment that he wrote and it was a list of fun. He’s a great guy to work with and is very understanding of any problems you’re having as a musician. I’d definitely recommend Edward as a lesson teacher for both trumpet and piano.
