I was first inspired to play the fiddle by my grandfather, Tom Smith. Many of my cousins started learning traditional instruments around the same time and we had a lot of fun jamming at family gatherings and at music festivals in our home state of Indiana. In 2015 I was proud to carry the family tradition of fiddling all the way to Nashville where I had the honor of playing with Ralph Stanley and the Clinch Mt Boys at Stanley’s last show at the Grand Ole Opry. 

With beginners I emphasize developing good technique and tone, and my approach to teaching integrates the Nashville Number System, music theory, ear training, improvisation, and notation.  

For intermediate and advanced students I tailor each lesson to help them explore their interests and goals. Maybe you’re interested in learning those moving double stops that Bobby Hicks is highlighted for, improvising and building more authentic solos, expanding your tool belt of licks, developing the qualities and techniques that make various fiddle styles unique. 

Learning an instrument as a beginner or advancing your techniques as a professional can be fun, challenging, and rewarding. It has enriched my life in a number of ways. The most joy has come through the friends I’ve made and the unique way that music allows you to connect with yourself and other people.

Cody has played with a variety of bands over the years, and in addition to playing at the Opry, Cody garnered first place in the 2016 SPBGMA International Bluegrass Band Competition with the Bluegrass Outlaws, has toured internationally, and garnered a number of ribbon wins at various fiddle contests. He studied under acclaimed fiddler Hunter Berry and has taught at Trinity Arts Center in Johnson City, TN, online, and from his home in Knoxville, TN. Cody holds a B.S. in Education and a M.A. in Religion.

When he’s not playing or teaching fiddle, Cody can be found teaching students at Knox County Schools, taking walks through his historic neighborhood, and hanging out with his super cool roommate, Cynthia.

I teach bluegrass fiddle using an approach designed to help students be able to learn both by ear and with sheet music, and to prepare to play with other musicians or attend bluegrass jams, as well as play with good technique and posture.  I teach children age 6 and older, and adults, and welcome adult beginners.  I teach online only.  Students use the book Jack Tuttle's Bluegrass Fiddle Primer, by Jack Tuttle, if they can already read music.  Students who do not yet know how to read music should start with Strictly Strings Violin Book 1. I am a professional violin and fiddle instructor offering online lessons for kids and adults including adult beginners.  I have performed in orchestras, chamber music groups, wedding music ensembles, bluegrass bands, and country bands.  I have played violin since 1988 and taught since 2003.  I hold a Bachelor of Music (violin performance) from San Francisco State University and an A.A. in Comprehensive Musicianship (music theory and performance) from De Anza College.  I offer weekly lessons, or lessons on a schedule as you go basis only, not biweekly or other schedules. I offer online violin and fiddle lessons only.  At this time I do not offer studio or in person lessons.  Please message me before booking lessons with me.

Cancellation and reschedule policy:

I have 24 hour cancellation policy (24 hours notice required to cancel without being charged for the lesson).  I will always attempt to reschedule lessons, but may not always be able to, especially with requested reschedules within 24 hours of the original lesson time, lessons that were rescheduled within 24 hours of the lesson time at the student's request may not be canceled, and must be paid for whether you attend the lesson or not, and the same lesson cannot be rescheduled more than once.  If you request that your lesson be rescheduled to occur during a week in which you already have a lesson scheduled, you must agree that you will pay for both lessons you have scheduled for that week, and will not cancel either of them, whether you attend the lessons or not.

Other schedule policies/schedule as you go FAQ:

I only offer weekly lessons, or lessons on a schedule as you go basis, not biweekly lessons or other schedules.  If you don't want a lesson at a fixed time, or a lesson every week, schedule as you go may work for you.  The way schedule as you go works, is students set up each lesson separately, for the time and date of their choice, seven days or less before the day of the lesson.  Schedule as you go lessons, or single lessons can't be set up earlier than seven days in advance of the planned lesson date.  Schedule as you go lessons do not have a recurring or reserved time.  I only offer weekly lessons at a recurring or reserved time.  If you must cancel more than two lessons recurring schedule lessons in a row, we will need to cancel your recurring schedule time if you have one, and switch to schedule as you go.

I have been teaching for over fifteen years. I play various styles including jazz, rock, blues, classical, country, and bluegrass. 
Instruments I teach include guitar, dobro, banjo, mandolin, and ukulele.  I also teach the Q Chord. I have performed in many different bands including rock, top forty, bluegrass, gospel, and country. I enjoy teaching students and find it to be fulfilling.

The violin sings, but the fiddle dances. Or so the old saying goes! In teaching fiddle, I love to bring essential violin technique together with the various styles of diverse music. In the first few lessons we'll explore the style of fiddle you'd like to play and create a path towards that sound. As time goes on, you'll be ready to jump into a bluegrass jam circle, start a ceili or shred like Lindsey Stirling! The direction you take is up to you, and I'm excited to help you meet your goals!

At 5 years old I was struck by the incredible beauty of Vivaldi's music, and ever since I've been playing violin. I hold a BA from Oberlin College of Arts and Sciences, won a scholarship to the Baroque Performance Institute in 2005 and attended the BPI again in 2006. Apart from teaching, as a professional musician performing in Southern California I am well versed both in classical violin and various fiddle styles ranging from bluegrass, Celtic and old-time to rock, pop and blues. I also play viola, cello, mandolin, guitar and bass and write music.

I was super nervous for my first lesson, as I’m a total novice at fiddle and had never taken an online music lesson of any kind before. Alani made me feel super comfortable, and I feel like I’m going to learn so much!

I am a multi-instrumentalist with a passion for bluegrass and old time music.  I have been studying music since the age of 9, and fell in love with traditional music when I was 13.  I love to perform and have had the opportunity to share the stage with many of my hero's.  My interest in teaching started when I was very young, and some of my first students were my younger siblings who wanted to play violin like me. 

Aside from being a musician and music teacher, I work as an informal ESL/EFL tutor, and love learning new languages.  

My teaching experience includes leading orchestra sectional rehearsals throughout high school, privately teaching students of all ages and skill levels, including special needs, and working as a teachers assistant in a religious school music class.  

I love helping my students succeed, and will do anything I can to teach a student in a way they connect with and find meaning in.  I am a flexible and patient teacher with lots of knowledge and experience.  I can explain things in many different ways to ensure you understand and learn something new in every lesson.  I believe a solid foundation of technique and music theory, along with a dynamic and interesting lesson plan, will help any student succeed in learning any genre of music.

People study subjects for a great number of reasons, consequently I customize my lessons to each individual student's needs and wants.

I teach violin / fiddle not through one method or genre but a unique blend of various styles, each one taking a fundamental seat in a broader performance curriculum. I like to tailor the lesson to the student. I will not use the same approach for everyone. I like to find out what the student is interested in and help them in reaching their personal goals. I aim to help them play songs they enjoy as quickly as possible, without sacrificing proper technique.

I have been playing the fiddle since I was 7 years old and I took lessons for 13 years. I started out taking lessons from a fiddle teacher who taught me entirely by ear. Later on, I also took classical violin lessons and I teach both styles. I have been teaching for 14 years and have taught over 150 students.  I like to continually challenge myself to become a better musician by learning new music, attending music camps, and dabbling in new instruments. I have a love for fiddle music, due to my roots, and I love to work with both children and adults!

Besides teaching, I also enjoy performing. I grew up playing the fiddle in my family's small bluegrass band. I'm honored to be a 5-time national champion at the National Old Time Fiddle Contest, the 2023 RockyGrass Fiddle champion, the 2019 Walnut Valley Old Time Fiddle champion, a two-time Rocky Mountain Regional Fiddle Champion, and a multiple-time Colorado State fiddle champion. Some of my students have gone on to win state and national titles themselves.

In 2012 she became a student teacher for the Atlanta Irish Music School, teaching not only fiddle and concertina, but tin whistle and bodhran. During her time with the Atlanta Irish Music School, she has performed at numerous venues: Chamber of Commerce, Spivey Hall, Atlanta City Winery and Emory Celtic Christmas. In 2013 under the Atlanta Celtic Company, Claire began to play and Irish dance with many bands in Atlanta, Georgia. Claire has participated in the Fleadh numerous years placing in the concertina and flute. In attending the Mid-west Fleadh, she participated in the Grupai Ceoil and Ceili Band competitions. 
Claire plays the fiddle for many Feiseanna (Irish Dance Competitions) throughout the US and Mexico since 2018. As a musician in the Feis Circuit Claire has the privilege of playing the Southern and Mid- Atlantic Oireachtas Competitions.
She is a graduate from the University of Georgia with a degree in Communications Studies and a certificate in Music Business.
