Barbee M.

North Bergen, NJ

About Barbee

NOW OFFERING LESSONS IN BERGEN COUNTY!

Welcome to my teacher profile! My name is Barbee and I am an active professional classical singer with over eight years of piano and voice teaching experience. I enjoy teaching both children and adults. Check out my specialities and see if you think we'd be a good fit! Then, feel free to click "Ask Barbee a Question" if you'd like more information from me!

Both voice and piano lessons are based on a foundation of healthy technique while incorporating musicianship skills and encouraging the student to develop their own creativity. While my focus as a
performer is opera and other classical music, I am experienced in teaching Broadway/musical theater, pop, rock, R&B, folk, and other styles and genres. I encourage my students to explore new styles and apply good technique to any style they may choose to sing or play.

I also specialize in helping prepare singers for auditions for college, performing arts schools, choirs, musicals, and competitions. As an active performer myself I have auditioned many, MANY times for different organizations. I have also been on "the other side of the table" and I know what qualities audition panels are looking for. Several of my current and former students have been accepted to college music programs, performing arts magnet schools, audition-only choirs, and theater programs to continue their studies. Let me help you show your best qualities at your audition!

As a member of both NATS (National Association for Teachers of Singing) and ACDA (American Choral Directors Association) I am constantly working to improve my teaching skills by keeping up with the latest pedagogical research. I love sharing new tips and techniques with my students!

I strive to create a lesson environment that is open and honest, where my students are never afraid to ask questions or try something new. I am always happy to explain concepts in a different way and I encourage improvisation and creativity in addition to healthy technique and strong musicianship.

I teach from a church in Bergen County, NJ; I am also available for in-home lessons in Hudson County, NJ, and Manhattan, NY.

Studio details:
Small chapel space
Grand piano, music stands
Waiting area for parents/siblings
Limited lot parking, plenty of street parking

So far with Barbee has been a fantastic experience, she is a really talented and patient teacher and performer, she is humorous which is good, you don't want a teacher that is serious all the time, although she can get serious when needed.
A really good person to work with, in general great! I truly love her teaching and her dedication to students.

Excellent!

Two months of lessons have proven very productive. I have seen great improvement in my daugher's abilities and confidence. Barbee is mild in her ways yet tenacious; always pushing to the next level. I like that I am able to sit through the lesson. The classes run on schedule. Barbee is responsive to calls/texts and is flexible with schedule changes.

My review is basically the same as the one below - my son is a little slow at guitar and Nelson is SO patient with him. You can tell he loves music and he really enjoys the teaching process. What a great find.

I have taken 8 lessons with Nelson and I'm very happy with him as my teacher. He is an accomplished guitarist, but more importantly, as a teacher he's very patient and allows me to learn at my own pace (which is slow). I would recommend him to anyone wishing to learn to play the guitar.

*** Lesson Details ***
What happens in a Lesson? In order to train your physical voice, it is necessary to do vocal exercises, in the same way that one needs to train at a gym. There is no "magic key" to unlock one's voice; it is a matter of daily practice and muscle strengthening/stretching. So, the first part of the lesson will be focused on vocal exercises specifically tailored to YOUR VOICE and its needs. The second half of the lesson is the fun part- SINGING! We will work on any songs and styles that YOU choose. Whether you want to sing Rock, Country, Pop, Musical Theater, or Classical, there is a healthy and communicative way to sing!

*** Studio Equipment ***
My home music studio is located in the upstairs loft, with access via an awesome spiral staircase! Parents and visitors are most welcome to view lessons in the loft studio, or can enjoy the sounds from the waiting room below, as the loft opens to the waiting room area. I have a piano, speaker system, and microphone equipment and the student should provide a recording device (iPhone, droid, iPad, etc.)

*** Travel Equipment ***
I provide a keyboard. The student should provide a recording device, iPhone, etc.

*** Specialties ***
I specialize in Classical and Broadway style singing, but have extensive experience in Contemporary Commercial Music as well. I teach a healthy approach to all styles, and modify technical approaches towards the genre that the student is most interested in.

Tenafly, NJ

About Jason

I am offering Piano Lessons and Vocal Coaching out of my home studio close to downtown Tenafly or in your home in Tenafly or surrounding towns. I have recently relocated here and am looking for students of all ages to join my studio.

I am a classically-trained pianist with a wealth of experience in solo piano literature, collaborative piano/accompanying (vocal & instrumental), and vocal coaching. In addition to classical music, I also greatly enjoy playing in other genres including pop, blues, gospel, and jazz. I've been in the New York area for a little over 10 years, and in that time hav
e performed at well-known venues such as St. Paul's Chapel, the Harvard Club, and the Metropolitan Room. I have been blessed to work with some fantastic singers from varied organizations like the Metropolitan Opera, Broadway, and LaGuardia School of the Performing Arts.

I have a reputation as an easygoing, friendly, and positive person. I enjoy seeing my students grow musically with my guidance and I am excited about sharing my talents with a new community.

My home studio is attached to my house, but has a separate entrance and has a waiting room for parents. It is quiet and soundproofed from the rest of the house for an optimal learning environment.

I encourage you to reach out to me with any questions you have about my background and services. I look forward to the possibility of working with you to reach your musical goals,

Accompaniment · In studio
I have worked with Jason Hart in NYC and NJ for five years in a few different capacities: First, he was Assistant Music Director for my church choir where he lead rehearsals and coached the choir, preparing us for each Sunday's service. Second, he has been my vocal studio accompanist for the past three years, helping prepare students for auditions and performances in classical, jazz, pop, Broadway, and blues styles. Third, Jason has personally coached me in preparing vocal pieces for some of my professional singing engagements over the past several years.

As a vocal coach and accompanist, Jason is a great collaborator who knows how to play the piano in a way that supports the vocalist, he uses good artistry in his playing, and he has good musical ideas that he encourages the vocalists to use in their singing. He has a good working knowledge of the classical foreign languages (Italian, German, French, Spanish), which is a great help to classical singers. He has a great, easy-going personality and works well with everyone - from children to adults.

I highly recommend Jason Hart as a vocal coach as well as piano accompanist!

Jason teaches my two children, aged 6 and 8, and has a terrific relationship with them. I have nothing but positive things to say. He is gentle and kind but knows how to focus their attention. They know they are expected to practice and they do - and look forward to their lessons. I have been impressed with their improvement over the last year and this is largely due to Jason. He picks the books they learn from, he teaches them scales and music theory, and he lets them have fun with songs over the holidays and on birthdays. Thank you Jason!

Sight reading comes easier to some singers than others, but it's not some mythical task akin to retrieving a golden fleece; sight-reading, even for the more able, is a learned skill, and there are several sig
