Christina C.

Hackensack, NJ

About Christina

Christina has played piano since the age of 3! She was given a piano for Christmas and never looked back. She has taken private lessons starting at age 6 and went on to the prestigious Ithaca College to major in Piano Performance. She also holds a B.A. degree in Psychology from Montclair State University. Although her plan was originally to travel the world performing, she decided that her passion was teaching the joy of music to others, and has made that her life. Christina has 15 years of teaching experience in professional music studios in NJ. She began at Elisabeth's School of Piano, w
hich has now grown into the Ringwood School of Music. She now teaches at Garden Street Music in Hoboken, Espressivo Piano in Livingston, and Finger Power Music in Edgewater. She teaches lessons to all ages and levels from beginner to professional. She can teach all styles, but specializes in classical. She follows a tried and true method of teaching including scales, arpeggios, Hanon exercises, as well as incorporating lesson, theory, and solo/fun books to ensure that her students have a well-rounded music education. Above all, Christina makes learning fun. She makes sure that her students are happy with what they are learning and gives them a choice as to what pieces/songs they would like to learn to accomplish their lessons. She makes lessons especially fun for younger children by bringing stickers and fun projects to lessons to encourage their progress. Christina has also extended experience working with children through accompanying for choirs and musicals. Christina is a fun teacher who makes learning how to play piano easy.

*** Lesson Details ***
I am a fun teacher and easy to work with, while also making sure that we cover a certain amount of learning material in each lesson. I follow a plan in my lessons based upon scales, Hanon exercises, music lesson books such as Faber and Faber "Piano Adventures" or Alfred lesson books, theory and sight-reading, as well as ear training work. I also make each lesson fun! I like to give students a choice of what song they would like to learn as their "fun song" while also working on "learning material" crucial to their musical education. I use stickers for the younger students for extra motivation, and allow each student to work up to his or her own ability. I encourage them to be the best they can be, without putting too much pressure on them. Above all, I make sure that the learning experience remains fun and relaxed. Each student learns at his or her own pace and I make sure that each student works up to their ability. Generally speaking, after 3-6 months of working with me as their piano teacher, a student will know the basics of hand placement on the keyboard, reading music, note naming and recognition, and be able to read and play music at a simple level.

*** Studio Equipment ***
I have a Yamaha keyboard with 88 fully weighted keys that plays and feels exactly like a piano.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I expect the student to have a piano or keyboard available for lessons and for practicing in between lessons at their home.

*** Specialties ***
I am classically trained, but have experience in and can teach all genres. I follow a plan in my lessons based upon scales, Hanon exercises, music lesson books such as Faber and Faber "Piano Adventures" or Alfred lesson books, theory and sight-reading, as well as ear training work.

While I have only had 3 lessons thus far with Christina, I can say with confidence that she is an outstanding instructor. She inquires as to how you learn, what style of teaching best works for the student, and what it is we want to learn, rather than a rigid lesson plan. That is not to say that she does not expect effort, practice & a desire to learn from her students, or that she doesn't have a lesson plan. She builds what I believe is a sound foundation for her beginner students by teaching us to read music and going note by note, chord by chord until it's done correctly. She is also very encouraging. Her ability to play all genre's of piano music is a huge asset as well. I would highly recommend her to students of all ages and abilities .

About Barbee

NOW OFFERING LESSONS IN BERGEN COUNTY!

Welcome to my teacher profile! My name is Barbee and I am an active professional classical singer with over eight years of piano and voice teaching experience. I enjoy teaching both children and adults. Check out my specialities and see if you think we'd be a good fit! Then, feel free to click "Ask Barbee a Question" if you'd like more information from me!

Both voice and piano lessons are based on a foundation of healthy technique while incorporating musicianship skills and encouraging the student to develop their own creativity. While my focus as a
performer is opera and other classical music, I am experienced in teaching Broadway/musical theater, pop, rock, R&B, folk, and other styles and genres. I encourage my students to explore new styles and apply good technique to any style they may choose to sing or play.

I also specialize in helping prepare singers for auditions for college, performing arts schools, choirs, musicals, and competitions. As an active performer myself I have auditioned many, MANY times for different organizations. I have also been on "the other side of the table" and I know what qualities audition panels are looking for. Several of my current and former students have been accepted to college music programs, performing arts magnet schools, audition-only choirs, and theater programs to continue their studies. Let me help you show your best qualities at your audition!

As a member of both NATS (National Association for Teachers of Singing) and ACDA (American Choral Directors Association) I am constantly working to improve my teaching skills by keeping up with the latest pedagogical research. I love sharing new tips and techniques with my students!

I strive to create a lesson environment that is open and honest, where my students are never afraid to ask questions or try something new. I am always happy to explain concepts in a different way and I encourage improvisation and creativity in addition to healthy technique and strong musicianship.

I teach from a church in Bergen County, NJ; I am also available for in-home lessons in Hudson County, NJ, and Manhattan, NY.

Barbee made my daughter feel at ease and free to express herself. Even though it was only the first lesson, Barbee already gave her so many pointers and bits of helpful criticism. She is pleasant and professional, and my daughter is looking forward to more sessions.

So far with Barbee has been a fantastic experience, she is a really talented and patient teacher and performer, she is humorous which is good, you don't want a teacher that is serious all the time, although she can get serious when needed.
A really good person to work with, in general great! I truly love her teaching and her dedication to students.

Excellent!

Two months of lessons have proven very productive. I have seen great improvement in my daugher's abilities and confidence. Barbee is mild in her ways yet tenacious; always pushing to the next level. I like that I am able to sit through the lesson. The classes run on schedule. Barbee is responsive to calls/texts and is flexible with schedule changes.

My review is basically the same as the one below - my son is a little slow at guitar and Nelson is SO patient with him. You can tell he loves music and he really enjoys the teaching process. What a great find.

I have taken 8 lessons with Nelson and I'm very happy with him as my teacher. He is an accomplished guitarist, but more importantly, as a teacher he's very patient and allows me to learn at my own pace (which is slow). I would recommend him to anyone wishing to learn to play the guitar.

What happens in a Lesson? In order to train your physical voice, it is necessary to do vocal exercises, in the same way that one needs to train at a gym. There is no "magic key" to unlock one's voice; it is a matter of daily practice and muscle strengthening/stretching. So, the first part of the lesson will be focused on vocal exercises specifically tailored to YOUR VOICE and its needs. The second half of the lesson is the fun part- SINGING! We will work on any songs and styles that YOU choose. Whether you want to sing Rock, Country, Pop, Musical Theater, or Classical, there is a healthy and communicative way to sing!

*** Studio Equipment ***
My home music studio is located in the upstairs loft, with access via an awesome spiral staircase! Alexander V.

Tenafly, NJ

About Alexander

Both teaching and performing have always been a large part of my life. Even as early as high school (Kiev State R.M.Gliere Higher College of music), I was already conducting private lessons and directing the wind ensemble. And it was at the St. Petersburg Conservatory in Russia, that I received my Masters Degree in Music Education, Performance and Conducting.
During the period from 1977-89, I held the position of principal Clarinet in the St. Petersburg Symphony and Kiev State Opera orchestras. At the same time, I worked as a professor at the Kiev State Music Academy.
When I immigrated to th
e US in 1989, I pursued various performance opportunities and was even offered a position in “The President’s Own” military band in Washington, DC. Unfortunately, due to extenuating circumstances, was unable to accept the employment. However, during all these years, I managed to maintain private clarinet lessons within the Tri-state area. I have been, and continue, to dedicate myself to motivational and implementation strategies that engage students in active learning, as well as, help to enrich their lives with music and the arts, whether or not they choose them as professions for the future.

I have had plenty of lessons with Vengerov and he can make a young musician 100x better. He fixed a lot of the problems in regards to my bad habits on clarinet. After each lesson, I felt motivation and progress as a musician. My family, and I saw major improvement after taking lessons with Vengerov as well, and I have listened to multiple of his other students play and was always impressed at how amazing they sounded. He is a big help in my high school Wind Ensemble too.
Vengerov is helpful, professional, and is absolutely 1st rate.

My 11 years old loves Mr. Vengegrov. Not only is he a multi-instrumentalist, but he's also a very professional and hard working musician and is very knowledgeable on any area of the music field. He's always willing to go the extra mile to see that everyone with whom he works can work at their best potential. And he's funny!!!

Mr. Vengerov is the epitome of a great teacher. When I first came to him, my skills were lacking in just all about major aspects- tone, finger/hand placement, breathing technique, music theory, etc.. After the first lesson, he had accurately identified everything that I needed to improve upon and started with the fundamentals to build a strong base; all the while keeping the ultimate goal of becoming a better player individually, and in an ensemble, in mind. At the end of each lesson I feel as if a significant amount of progress has been made and I know exactly what to work on and how to work on it. Mr. Vengerov is an extremely patient, knowledgeable, and passionate teacher that you can always count on to be reliable and accommodating. I highly recommend taking lessons with him to anyone who has an interest in advancing their skills, because nothing is better than a teacher that truly loves what they do.
