My sewing curriculum is designed so that first time learners will feel motivated to keep on sewing. The first three projects are usually completed within the first 3-4 lessons. After learning how to operate the student's machine, together we will make a draw string bag, a skirt (for a doll, for a student or someone else) and a stuffed animal. These first three projects lay an important foundation; students learn basic and useful skills they will use over and over again as they begin to choose their own projects that we work on together.

I believe that if the student- whether a child or an adult- enjoys sewing and sees what they are capable of from the start, they will be more eager to learn more and take on new challenges.

Currently developing sewing worksheets for children.

About Melissa

Hi there! I'm Melissa, and I am a fashion design and sewing teacher on Staten Island. I have been teaching children and adults how to sew since 2014. I've been sewing since I was a child, and I've been teaching since 2007.

I am mostly self-taught, and that, coupled with my youth, gives me a unique perspective when teaching. My first goal is to give my students all of the tools they need to feel confident from the very first lesson- almost all of my students finish the first hour with a handy drawstring bag to keep their new sewing supplies in. I have a specific sewing curriculum for the first 3-5 lessons that helps lay a groundwork for making more exciting things.

After we finish those steps, I work individually with students to make whatever they would like, from Halloween costumes to memory pillows to peplum tops. The choice is

yours. I'm not the kind of teacher that is going to make you spend hours mastering a straight hem because frankly, that's really boring. I want you to learn while working on projects you care about

My experience includes;

-I worked in a tutoring school teaching kids from ages 5-17 in all subjects.
-I designed a program called Creative Studios for creative writing, fashion design and fine art. I taught these subjects to students aged 8-12.
-I teach sewing and fashion design (including fashion drawing) to various students in a one on one format.
-I teach fashion design and sewing to tweens, teens, and adults at SI Dance and Arts Center
-I taught at the Harlem Educational Activities Fund Saturday Academy
-I am pursuing a Masters in Adolescent Education in Social Studies

Please note that I am located in Staten Island, NY. I may be able to accommodate some Brooklyn or Woodbridge students, but please inquire before booking.

My studio space is located at Staten Island Dance and Art Center. It's a lovely, artsy space with bright yellow walls, six sewing machines, and 2 professional mannequins.

Private Sewing Teacher

I have been sewing for 25 years (Since I was 7). I can teach you anything you want to know from basic beginner sewing to the most advanced techniques. I can also show you how to draft your own patterns (including children's and menswear).

How to use speciality machine feet to make sewing straight much easier.

I have both regular machines and sergers in my studio and can teach you how to sew both non-stretch and stretch fabrics.

About Anne

I am a mom of two littles and work from home making pattern and technical specification packages for fashion designers.

I teach sewing, pattern making and fashion design lessons from my home studio in Broomfield.

I have been sewing since I was 7 years old and while I sometimes use commercial sewing patterns I prefer to make my own, I always have.

I have a degree in Pattern Making, Fashion Design, and Product Development. Adding a lot of standard technique to my own methods.

In sewing, I can teach you anything from the simplest basics to how to sew stretch fabrics, and much more. There is no need to be afraid of any particular fabrics or machines, book a lesson and we'll go over whatever you need.

In Fashion Design I can teach you the basics of fashion drawing and show you how to translate those designs into patterns and

sewn garments.

Want to learn how to alter clothes to make them fit better? Or how to upcycle pretty much anything.

Need just one lesson? OK :)

My goal as a teacher is to help you achieve your goals. I know that we all learn at a different pace.

2 Sewing Machines.
Juki and Brother Sergers

My first lesson went great! Anne showed me everything I needed to know to help me begin practicing on my own with confidence. She does have two small children who were well behaved, but if distractions are a problem, I would mention that before taking your first lesson. At the end of my two hour session I had sewn my first bag and now have something to show my friends and family! Thanks, Anne.

Beginner-You will learn basic skills of hand and machine stitching, seams, darts, pleats, zippers, pouch, tote bag and build many more samples into a scrapbook.

Intermediate- Fabric dimension and behavior, cutting skills, bias binding, various necklines and making a skirt or blouse. Learn to make garment with commercial pattern.

Advanced-Make dress, skirt, pants or blouse with lining.

Note: Although students learn at different rates, the above results are expected, if taking lessons 2hours a week, for 5weeks for all levels.

About Lily

I am a fashion designer/instructor and former social worker. I am very patient with students and passionate about sewing. I get excited watching students build skills gradually from basic through advanced level techniques.
Also, I am one of the few teachers in the country who teaches the exclusive "Freehand" sewing, which is sewing without ready-made (commercial) pattern, like our grandparents did.
As a social worker, I taught participants in a homeless shelter, how to make various items geared towards independent living. For 9years now, I've been teaching at a fabric store in East Harlem where patrons sign up for group sewing lessons as well as private lessons. I teach garment construction, alterations, home decor, and various sewing projects.

We couldn't have imagined a more excellent instructor for our daughter. Lily has such a kind and pleasant demeanor. She is intelligent, patient, and is literally the best teacher that I have seen work with my daughter.

I give Lily my highest recommendation and always look forward to her coming and teaching my daughter. The relationship that they have formed is invaluable, beyond sewing. We are so appreciative and grateful to her.

Vena is a consummate professional. My son wanted to learn some basic sewing skills, as well as learn how to make clothes and accessories. In the first 1.5 hour lesson at our home, he completed a simple zipper bag. Over the course of six lessons he made a messenger bag, dress shirt and started on pants - which he finished while we were on vacation. Vena is an expert and also knows how to tailor her lessons to her individual students work style, needs and goals. I give her my highest recommendation. My son will be working with her again to learn how to design his own creations. Five stars all the way.

I think Vena is wonderful. She is patient, warm, supportive and knowledgeable. She can help you complete specific projects (make a dress or a stuffed animal), help you become a better sewer or teach you the art of pattern making. Also, I should mention, she work professionally in the fashion industry and give lots of great insight into how garments are designed. Love Her!

Private Sewing Teacher

**Although my availability does not list the weekend, I am flexible for some weekends. Contact me!**

Lessons I offer:
-how to set up and use a sewing machine
-sewing basics
-sewing tips and tricks
-going over how to read and use a store-bought pattern + completion of project
-pattern-drafting basics (basic tote bag, skirt, top, some homewares - sorry no menswear patterns) + completion of project, etc.
**Please note: I am NOT offering in-depth pattern-drafting lessons.

About Sabrina Jacqui

I first learned how to sew from a wonderful woman teaching in-home sewing lessons. Her one on one lessons helped catapult me into the skilled sewer I am today.

I have been sewing since then for about 15 years now. I started my own clothing brand in high school where I created every item by hand (pattern-drafting to sewing). I then went on to receive my BFA in Fashion Design from Massachusetts College of Art and Design where my construction skills advanced. I am currently working on design commissions in NYC.

My sewing teaching methods are unique in that I have both sides of the equation to offer--structural/basics and creative/fashion. I am happy to work with any student on what they choose to focus on and what they are excited about gaining from the lessons. If you're unsure what you want to learn, we can work together on a small p

roject to get you going!

Sabrina was the most incredibly knowledgeable, patient and helpful teacher. I had just a rudimentary understanding of sewing but with a few short lessons she helped me so much to do so many things. Her knowledge of everything to do with sewing and fashion is just astonishing and her work is impeccable. I would highly recommend her to anyone who wants to learn more about sewing or construction.

About Adenike

Hello,

My name is Adenike, you can call me Adé. I'm a trained fashion stylist and designer with a degree in Fashion Merchandising and Design from the University of Rhode Island.

I have taught sewing and design, to people of all
ages, genders, and abilities throughout my professional career. It began in 2002 when I decided to work with the Americorps, Teach America program. There I created and executed a lesson plan that taught students how to sketch, render, sew, read patterns and adjusts garments for personal to suit their personal needs. The program incorporated science, math, and history so that they had a practical and anthropological approach to fashion design. It was great, and I discovered that one of my other joys in life is teaching.

Most recently, I've worked with Hobby Quest, where I teach children in an after

-school setting. Hobby Quest requires an extensive background check because of that fact that work is done with students on school grounds. I can supply references that will attest to my professionalism and easy going nature.

***For both sewing and styling lessons, it's required that you schedule for a 60 minutes introductory session.
*** If interested in group sewing lessons:
- There is a min 5 students/ max 12 students
- Packages must be purchased in groups of 5:
Level A then Level B ( optional)
