My sewing curriculum is designed so that first time learners will feel motivated to keep on sewing. The first three projects are usually completed within the first 3-4 lessons. After learning how to operate the student's machine, together we will make a draw string bag, a skirt (for a doll, for a student or someone else) and a stuffed animal. These first three projects lay an important foundation; students learn basic and useful skills they will use over and over again as they begin to choose their own projects that we work on together.
I believe that if the student- whether a child or an adult- enjoys sewing and sees what they are capable of from the start, they will be more eager to learn more and take on new challenges.
Currently developing sewing worksheets for children.
Hi there! I'm Melissa, and I am a fashion design and sewing teacher on Staten Island. I have been teaching children and adults how to sew since 2014. I've been sewing since I was a child, and I've been teaching since 2007.
I am mostly self-taught, and that, coupled with my youth, gives me a unique perspective when teaching. My first goal is to give my students all of the tools they need to feel confident from the very first lesson- almost all of my students finish the first hour with a handy drawstring bag to keep their new sewing supplies in. I have a specific sewing curriculum for the first 3-5 lessons that helps lay a groundwork for making more exciting things.
After we finish those steps, I work individually with students to make whatever they would like, from Halloween costumes to memory pillows to peplum tops. The choice is
yours. I'm not the kind of teacher that is going to make you spend hours mastering a straight hem because frankly, that's really boring. I want you to learn while working on projects you care about
My experience includes;
-I worked in a tutoring school teaching kids from ages 5-17 in all subjects. -I designed a program called Creative Studios for creative writing, fashion design and fine art. I taught these subjects to students aged 8-12. -I teach sewing and fashion design (including fashion drawing) to various students in a one on one format. -I teach fashion design and sewing to tweens, teens, and adults at SI Dance and Arts Center -I taught at the Harlem Educational Activities Fund Saturday Academy -I am pursuing a Masters in Adolescent Education in Social Studies
Please note that I am located in Staten Island, NY. I may be able to accommodate some Brooklyn or Woodbridge students, but please inquire before booking.
My studio space is located at Staten Island Dance and Art Center. It's a lovely, artsy space with bright yellow walls, six sewing machines, and 2 professional mannequins.
Beginner-You will learn basic skills of hand and machine stitching, seams, darts, pleats, zippers, pouch, tote bag and build many more samples into a scrapbook.
Intermediate- Fabric dimension and behavior, cutting skills, bias binding, various necklines and making a skirt or blouse. Learn to make garment with commercial pattern.
Advanced-Make dress, skirt, pants or blouse with lining.
Note: Although students learn at different rates, the above results are expected, if taking lessons 2hours a week, for 5weeks for all levels.
I am a fashion designer/instructor and former social worker. I am very patient with students and passionate about sewing. I get excited watching students build skills gradually from basic through advanced level techniques. Also, I am one of the few teachers in the country who teaches the exclusive "Freehand" sewing, which is sewing without ready-made (commercial) pattern, like our grandparents did. As a social worker, I taught participants in a homeless shelter, how to make various items geared towards independent living. For 9years now, I've been teaching at a fabric store in East Harlem where patrons sign up for group sewing lessons as well as private lessons. I teach garment construction, alterations, home decor, and various sewing projects.
I enjoyed the session very much. The teacher was thorough and organize. The lesson was presented clearly and was easy to understand. I learned a lot in just 2 hours; looking forward to the next class

We couldn't have imagined a more excellent instructor for our daughter. Lily has such a kind and pleasant demeanor. She is intelligent, patient, and is literally the best teacher that I have seen work with my daughter.
I give Lily my highest recommendation and always look forward to her coming and teaching my daughter. The relationship that they have formed is invaluable, beyond sewing. We are so appreciative and grateful to her.

Lily is very kind and knowledgeable. She was able to give constructive advice on projects I was having trouble with. Going to continue with her.

Vena is a consummate professional. My son wanted to learn some basic sewing skills, as well as learn how to make clothes and accessories. In the first 1.5 hour lesson at our home, he completed a simple zipper bag. Over the course of six lessons he made a messenger bag, dress shirt and started on pants - which he finished while we were on vacation. Vena is an expert and also knows how to tailor her lessons to her individual students work style, needs and goals. I give her my highest recommendation. My son will be working with her again to learn how to design his own creations. Five stars all the way.

I think Vena is wonderful. She is patient, warm, supportive and knowledgeable. She can help you complete specific projects (make a dress or a stuffed animal), help you become a better sewer or teach you the art of pattern making. Also, I should mention, she work professionally in the fashion industry and give lots of great insight into how garments are designed. Love Her!
The way that I teach is to help the student develop their own style. My first goal is to give my students all of the tools they need to feel confident from the very first lesson. We start with the fundamentals of hand-sewing and make our way up, all this with a mixture of fun, listenting and patience.
I love learning and teaching languages and although I studied law I really prefer teaching languages (I speak 5 languages) and sewing (another of my favourite hobbies) love travelling and photography.
I will be happy to answer the questions which arise in between your one-on-one lessons. In short, I will do everything I can to increase your rate of language acquisition.
It goes without saying that I love to teach! I have an easy-going personality and a positive attitude. Learning such a beautiful and multifaceted language as Spanish or Romanian will be fun with me. I love travelling, I have hosted many exchange students, so I have developed good communication and creativity skills.
I will encourage your interest and curiosity into the different cultures by using amusing topics during the session, which will automatically imp
rove your experience.
I am able to communicate with students at a very personal level . I am very passionate and enthusiastic to get them to learn. I will also promote study habits.
I have a lot of nice material and is interested in what people have to say and their needs. I am friendly and kind; I try to correct students making sure they don't feel embarrassed. I makes people feel comfortable, and encourages them to participate and learn, -even the shy ones. I enjoy the class as much as you.
I’m already learning a lot. She has me do a lot of talking which is very good practice.

Alexandra was professional and kind. She very patiently helped me through some technical problems with the camera on my laptop. She immediately recognized the problems I was having on my crocheting project and got me on the right track. She’s friendly and put me at ease right away. A very pleasant and informative session.

My name is Adenike, you can call me Adé. I'm a trained fashion stylist and designer with a degree in Fashion Merchandising and Design from the University of Rhode Island.
I have taught sewing and design, to people of all ages, genders, and abilities throughout my professional career. It began in 2002 when I decided to work with the Americorps, Teach America program. There I created and executed a lesson plan that taught students how to sketch, render, sew, read patterns and adjusts garments for personal to suit their personal needs. The program incorporated science, math, and history so that they had a practical and anthropological approach to fashion design. It was great, and I discovered that one of my other joys in life is teaching.
Most recently, I've worked with Hobby Quest, where I teach children in an after
-school setting. Hobby Quest requires an extensive background check because of that fact that work is done with students on school grounds. I can supply references that will attest to my professionalism and easy going nature.
***For both sewing and styling lessons, it's required that you schedule for a 60 minutes introductory session. *** If interested in group sewing lessons: - There is a min 5 students/ max 12 students - Packages must be purchased in groups of 5: Level A then Level B ( optional)
Adenike was well-prepared and very flexible to the situation and all my questions. She adopted my goal as her own and did everything possible to get us there--which she did! I look forward to our next lesson.

"Maria is a fantastic pattern maker and sewing teacher! She was able to make a pattern out of my existing garment without taking it apart and walked me thr
ough all the steps of re-creating the item. Not only is she very knowledgable, she is also a great teacher and was able to explain things to me so I could retain them and practice on my own. I was completely new to sewing and she patiently answered all my questions and made sure I was comfortable with the different stitches. She also taught me how to setup and use my new sewing machine! Maria is a very down to earth and easy going person; it was really fun chatting during our lessons. I will definitely be back for more lessons!"
"Sonya was great! She took her time, but kept focused on showing me some great sewing techniques and tips. I will definitely be taking another session from
her in the near future."
"Angela is awesome! She is kind, patient, organized, gives clear instructions and very easy to work with. My dogs barked the entire time and my home is
less than white-glove clean; but she puts you at ease and you never feel talked down too or judged in any way. You will not be sorry for choosing her as your teacher."
"Shannon shares her skills freely with students and makes classes fun."
