BM -- Jazz Performance from The Ohio State University
My goal as a teacher is to give you the facility to express yourself through music. The key parts to developing this facility are:
1. theory -- if you know your theory, you know the best way to express your idea without having to think about it
2. technique -- the last thing you want is for your technique to hinder your ability to express your idea. Having good technique lets your ideas flow naturally
When you take lessons with me, you get out of it what you put in. Your job as student is to be honest with what you expect to achieve and my job as teacher is to give you the tools to achieve it
I have been playing music almost my entire life. I first started on trombone in 4th grade then switched to guitar in 6th. I picked up the electric bass in my later teenage years and learned the upright bass (both jazz and classical) in college. My students get the benefit of my education, as well

Classical music is the foundation for everything else!
I have been teaching piano for over 40 years, full-time for the past 15. Besides the actual repertoire, technique and theory are always included in my lessons because they are essential. Sight reading and ear training are also included in some lessons.
I stress accuracy in playing and attention to details! I also teach my students HOW to practice. Slow, accurate practice is the answer. Practicing takes patience!
Please note: Home lessons must be at a location that I can get to easily with public transportation. I do not have a car.
I started to study the piano at the age of seven with Hrant Minassian in my hometown of Island Park, New York. During high school I continued my studies with Jack Chaikin , a graduate of the Juilliard School. I attended Hofstra University where I received a B.A. in Music in 1979. At Hofstra, my pian
Emil is a wonderful teacher. He is far and away the most accomplished piano player I have studied with, and his knowledge of, and facility for, playing really comes through in his instruction. He is always bringing formal instruction back to the act of performance, and how to make whatever piece you are working on, even the simplest, sound the best that it can be.
Emil isn't afraid to share his own struggles with whatever piece he is currently working on, and pointing out that he faces the same challenges that every practicing player faces.
Emil is personable, knowledgeable, and kind. I can't recommend him highly enough as an instructor.

Learning guitar scales prepares you for the fun of playing riffs and solos. If you know your scales but you don't know how to take the next step, try one of these tips from guitar teacher James W... You have 7 notes to choose from and the following 7 steps will help you in ways you cannot even predict. Most guitar players learn the basics such as the 5 basic major scale patterns in G major and go on to learn them in the other major keys as well. Perhaps you know what a pentatonic scale is in …

Getting up on stage can be scary for any new musician, but the feelings of anxiety can be even more intense if you consider yourself on the quiet side. So how can a shy singer survive? Before you relegate yourself to the audience for the rest of your life, know that many timid musicians have made a name for themselves - Barbra Streisand, Bob Dylan and Carly Simon, to name a few, have all dealt with anxiety or shyness off-stage. The good news is that there are ways to train yourself to become a c …

When you're practicing the drums and learning new rhythms, one of the best ways to perfect your skills is to have something to copy and imitate. Playing along with your favorite songs is a great idea, but you need to make sure you're practicing the right way. All of that fun could go to waste if you're not targeting the proper patterns! Selecting Your Songs When your drum teacher gives you new rhythms to practice, ask him or her which songs might have some examples of these rhythms. This is …
