Hi! My name is Kaitlyn and I just recently graduated from college, so I’m pretty young. However, I am an experienced teacher. Throughout all four years of college I worked as a teaching assistant in my college classes. I also have taught piano students before. 

I graduated first in my class, not because the work was easy, but because I am a hard worker and I am persistent. I am also very patient and will do whatever it takes to help you learn what you want to learn. 

I love working with kids and have a lot of experience with that from babysitting, being a nanny, teaching piano, working in Sunday schools, and being an older sister.

Hi! My name is Kaitlyn and I’ve been playing piano since I was 4 years old. I was a competitive pianist for 13 years until I went to college, from which I just graduated with a degree in computer science. I’ve always wanted to teach piano, either as a full job or on the side. I have experience teaching young students in general, and I have had piano students in the past. 

I’m willing to teach you whatever music you want to learn, or to use a tried and true curriculum with you! All that I ask of you is that you be patient with me, and that you practice in your own free time.

In this third of three segments about intervals, students will learn tricks about how to listen for certain intervals. By the end of the session, students should have a better grasp on the distance between intervals and how to use songs they are familiar with to pick out what type of interval they are hearing.

How To Read Sheet Music - Part XV - Hearing Intervals

In this session, students' understanding of intervals from session 13 will grow as they learn how to read intervals on sheet music. In learning how to read, they should, by the end of the session, also be able to write down examples of intervals they have learned.

How To Read Sheet Music - Part XIV - Reading Intervals

In this session, students will learn what an interval is. They will also learn to define minor seconds, major seconds, minor thirds, major thirds, perfect fourths, perfect fifths, major sixths, minor sixths, major sevenths, minor sevenths, and perfect octaves based on how far notes are apart on the keyboard.

How To Read Sheet Music - Part XIII - Intervals

In this session, we return to theory concepts as we discuss dynamics. Students are introduced to static dynamics (such as piano and forte) as well as dynamic actions (such as crescendo and decrescendo). Students are also given tips on how to put those dynamics into practice on a piano using their wrist and finger movements.

How To Read Sheet Music - Part XII - Dynamics

In this session of How To Read Sheet Music, students will go through a review of all the notes they have learned so far. They are shown every note in a random order and given a few seconds to determine (on their own) what that note is, with the instructor providing hints and re-iterating tips and tricks learned in previous sessions throughout. 

How To Read Sheet Music - Part XI - Note Review

In this video, students continue to learn how to read notes on and off the staff in the bass clef. Students will learn two ledger lines below and above the staff.

How To Read Sheet Music - Part X - Bass Ledger Notes

In this video, students continue to learn how to read notes on and off the staff in the treble clef. Students will learn two ledger lines below and above the staff, as well as how to determine ledger notes that go above and below those.

How To Read Sheet Music - Part IX - Treble Ledger Notes

In this session, students will learn how to put the notes they've learned into practice by correlating the notes on the staff to a piano keyboard. This session focuses on the bass notes that students learned in session 4.

How To Read Sheet Music - Part VIII - Bass Notes on Piano

In this session, students will learn how to put the notes they've learned into practice by correlating the notes on the staff to a piano keyboard. This session focuses on the treble notes that students learned in session 3.

How To Read Sheet Music - Part VII - Treble Notes on the Piano

In this video, students are introduced to the basics of a keyboard. We walk through the patterns that they will see on the keyboard as well as the most important note of all - Middle C.
We also discuss how some notes can have more than one name. All of this is to prepare for the next two lessons, where students will learn how to put what they've learned into action.

How To Read Sheet Music - Part VI - The Keyboard

In this short video, students are introduced to the non-ledger bass notes. Students are again encouraged to practice on their own using online tools or flashcards in order to get secure with these notes.
