My goal as an instructor is to keep the lessons fresh, fun, interesting, and to ultimately guide the students to better teach themselves as they gain experience and familiarity with the instrument and music. Students can have their lessons catered to the music and styles they wish to pursue. Lessons are tailored to each individual student so that we can build upon their strengths and focus on lessons to improve weaker areas. Students will learn how to build dexterity, use proper technique, and be creative. Every student has different goals, some really want to learn theory and read music. Others may simply want to learn to strum a few chords. Whatever the goal, I can provide the instructions to help the student succeed!

For most of my 15 years of playing music (since I was 8 years old) I was completely musically illiterate; no reading and no formal instruction on either the guitar or piano. Because of that, when I learned the intricate parts of music I connected everything to the sounds we hear and the energy that comes from them.

The way I teach reflects the way I learned; I focus on what you're interested in and what you love and help you learn to develop THAT. Does that mean you have to have strong fundamentals? Absolutely! But does that mean that you have to play the kind of music I like? Absolutely not. We're formed by what we love and what our ears hear. I'm dedicated to your needs. Technique is very important to me because it leads us to the best version of ourselves.

As a guitar/bass teacher I'm comfortable in most styles of contemporary electric guitar; rock, metal, jazz, funk, and everything in between. I'm a huge fan of groove-based music and it informs everything I do. You ...

All ages are welcome! I've been playing guitar for 15 years, and been involved in multiple groups and bands (playing guitar, bass, drumset, marching drums, and sometimes vocals) since 2008. I teach fundamentals of playing (finger-picking or with a pick), how to read tabs, alternate tunings, chord structure, the importance of scales, and can help you learn to pick up your favorite songs just by listening to them! If you are interested, I can also show you how to get started on recording your own music!

About James

I'm a guitar/marching drum teacher from Oxford, AL. I've been playing guitar for 15 years and marching percussion for 11 years. I am currently employed as an electrician on a US Navy submarine in New London, CT, but music has always been my main passion. I teach guitar (beginner to intermediate)

I am classically trained as well as trained in Jazz and comp style by reading chord charts and popular song chord progressions. I particularly enjoy classical music, and have numerous awards through the Certificate of Merit Music Teachers Association (MTA) Program of Southern California. I have completed the entirety of the MTA program through their advanced level and have been invited to play at numerous honors recitals. I understand musical theory, chord progressions, the fundamentals of music history, solfege (singing while playing to train the ear to musical notes), and the various aspects of reading and playing music on the piano. I also enjoy playing other instruments such as the alto saxophone, flute, ukulele, and guitar.

My lessons will offer beginner and intermediate progression through music theory, classical piano playing, solfege, music history, duets, and extra musical content such as jazz and popular songs if the student is interested.

"Our 5 year old son is currently taking lessons with Mr. Stewart. Mr. Stewart is a fantastic teacher who is able to communicate effectively with our son. Mr. Stewart sets expectations at the beginning of each class and gives assignments until the next lesson. He asks that our son dedicate ten minutes a day to his lessons. We are overjoyed that our son has learned so much in just three lessons. We look forward to a wonderful journey with Mr. Stewart."

"When I first signed up with take lessons I was very skeptical. I had never done anything like this before and had no idea what to expect. I read the reviews which were great, but still felt skeptic because I know everyone has different experiences. I must say that all the reviews were very true! Tanisha made me feel very welcome in her home. She listened to my concerns and her feedback washed them away. I left her home studio feeling excited, confident and just high on life and what's in store for my next session."

10 Proven Steps For Writing Lyrics That Stick

The late Amy Winehouse tribute album Lioness: Hidden Treasures has been making waves on the UK music charts, securing the #1 spot just days after its release.  Although the posthumous album has had its share of drama and questionable reviews, the collection - with its mix of covers and raw, unfinished tunes polished up by the producers - seems fitting in depicting Amy as the troubled, tattered star that she was. As she sings at the start of "Best Friends, Right?": "I can't wait to get away f …
