About John
Hi, I'm John! I'm a full-time musician, currently splitting my time between teaching drums and touring with indie rock band Step Rockets. I've been fortunate enough to spend the past 12 years teaching, recording, and performing across North America.

I started drumming at the age of 10, honing my chops under the tutelage of drummer/vibraphonist Steve Roehm, member of the acclaimed Twin Cities jazz trio, The New Standards. I continued my musical education at St. Olaf College, where I played drums in the college's nationally accredited Jazz One ensemble while studying percussion with jazz veterans Phil Hey and Dave Hagedorn. I then spent three years teaching students in St. Paul Public Schools while developing a strong base of private drum students in the Twin Cities.

I love sharing my passion for drums with people of all ages
and musical backgrounds. I provide a fun and stimulating learning environment in which students can foster their drum skills and grow their love of music. I have a thorough understanding of drumming technique coupled with an in-depth knowledge of different styles and genres, which I've accumulated through playing with a wide variety of bands and ensembles.

*** Lesson Details ***
I provide a laid back atmosphere, ensuring that lessons are equal parts fun and education. I tailor my curriculum based on my students' skill level and interests. I can teach any number of drum set skills, from technique and music reading to advanced coordination and improvisation.

About David
I am an experienced accordion teacher and performer, offering lessons at all levels from beginner to advanced in my home near Rosedale and the St. Paul campus of the U of MN. I especially enjoy working with children and with adult beginners. For those who do not own an accordion, I have accordions available for rental and can also help you purchase a quality used accordion at a reasonable price.

My background: I have been giving accordion lessons for ten years and have been performing on accordion for (has it really been that long?!) over fifty years. I originally studied accordion at the Henry Johns studios in Allentown, PA, and later studied with Dee Langley in Minneapolis. I have performed with the group Mosaica, which has appeared regularly at Kramarczuk's in Northeast Minneapolis and has also been featured at venues such as Polish
Festival in Minneapolis and Festival of Nations in St. Paul. I also perform in a smaller three-person group, known as the Accidental Trio. As a solo musician I have performed for many special events, such as weddings and parties. I have frequently been called upon to play accordion in pit orchestras for musicals, including "Fiddler on the Roof" (5 different productions), "Cabaret," and "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat."

I recently graduated with a Bachelor of Music degree in performance from St. Norbert College in De Pere, Wisconsin. I will also be attending the University of Minnesota - Twin Cities for a Master of Music degree in performance as well. I hope to continue my education and pursue a Doctor of Musical Arts degree within the next few years.

In the eleven years I have played saxophone, I have participated in a wide variety of ensembles. I have played lead alto saxophone in my undergraduate jazz band my entire four years there and principal saxophonist in the wind ensemble my senior year. I have also participated in pit orchestra, playing clarinet, flute, and soprano saxophone, saxophone ensemble, and in a backup band for a show choir, Kids from Wisconsin, playing alto, tenor, and soprano. I have also recently been awarded the Tony Winters Ins
trumental Music Award for extraordinary musical performance.

With knowledge in jazz, classical, and pop saxophone, I am able to teach all ages and ability levels in one, or all three of these categories. I have had a few students over the past six months and absolutely love teaching them. We have covered technical skills, repertoire, and saxophone basics. Whether it's a 30 minute lesson or a 60 minute lesson, I make every second count! I work in a relaxed environment and make it fun and productive for all ages. I am willing to do lessons online or in-home.

My passion for music has no limit and I really want to share that with any and every student. I strive to be a positive influence in the music teaching world so that students can carry a firm foundation of music for a lifetime. I look forward to meeting you and helping you become a better musician!

About Thomas
Name: Thomas Strommen

Experience: 15 years of playing experience. I perform regularly in the Twin Cities, primarily in jazz and rock settings and have been doing so since I was 18. I am formally trained with a strong foundation in music theory.

Why I teach: I want lessons to be positive experiences. Playing music ought to be fun and meaningful in my view. It is an activity that can be done one's whole life. Music builds community and promotes personal well-being. I believe in helping students become well-rounded musicians who both know their instrument, and have a familiarity with the wide world of music.

What I teach: First I help each student establish a basic foundation in how to play the saxophone (if they are a beginner), then I help each student become better in the particular style or styles of saxophone playing that interests
them. Jazz is the style I am most familiar with and I eventually encourage all students to explore jazz improvisation. I also teach classical saxophone playing of the sort that is expected in school concert bands. The saxophone is a very dynamic instrument and can produce a wide variety of tones, which is why it is found is so many different genres of music.

About David
David Walton has made numerous appearances across the country as an up-and-coming lyric tenor. Recent roles include Count Almaviva with "requisite Rossini high notes" (The Wall Street Journal) in Francesca Zambello's new production of Il Barbiere di Siviglia at The Glimmerglass Festival and Ernesto in Don Pasquale with Minnesota Opera, where David was hailed as “a true lyric tenor with strong Italianate stylings" and credited with “the sweetest singing of the evening” (Star Tribune). As the title role in Albert Herring with Union Avenue Opera, Broadway World called David "the perfect voice for this role."

David spent two years as a member of Minnesota Opera’s prestigious Resident Artist Program. There, he sang Tamino in Die Zauberflöte, Tybalt in Gounod’s Roméo et Juliette, and debuted the shepherd Silvio in a new production of the Lore
nzo Da Ponte rarity L’arbore di Diana by Vicente Martín y Soler. Other credits as a Resident Artist include multiple world premieres including covering Larry Renault in William Bolcom’s Dinner at Eight and singing Delbert Grady in Paul Moravec's The Shining, where Opera News described Mr. Walton as "equally chilling in his casual charm and suavity."

Mr. Walton made his Glimmerglass debut as Parpignol in La bohème and sang the role of Count Alberto in Rossini's L'occasione fa il ladro as a member of their Young Artist Program. He also covered Reverend Parris in Francesca Zambello’s staging of The Crucible, performed the tenor solo from Rossini’s Stabat Mater, and played Frederic in a scene from The Pirates of Penzance for special guest Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg. As a Gerdine Young Artist with Opera Theatre of Saint Louis, Mr. Walton covered Matthew Gurney in Tobias Picker’s Emmeline, sang a Student in La rondine, and Belmonte in scenes from Mozart’s The Abduction from the Seraglio with the Saint Louis Symphony. He also sang Azor in Opera for the Young’s tour of Zemire et Azor by André Grétry and both Belmonte and Ernesto with Brava! Opera Theatre in Ashland, Oregon.
