안녕하세요!

My name is Alexandra. I lived in Korea for 16 months and started learning Korean language from scratch myself--so I know the effort it takes to master the basics and I know how to help you get there. I finished up a degree at the University of Utah with a minor in Korean studies in December 2016. I love sharing this beautiful language.

Beginning students can expect to learn how to read and write Hangul (the Korean alphabet) and will progress through basic conversational grammar and vocabulary. Korean includes three formality levels. I teach from the top down (most formal to least) so that student's can feel confident they are being polite and respectful even as they increase their ability to communicate.

About Alexandra
Alexandra Mortenson is a private violin teacher and writing coach in Salt Lake City. Her name means “keeper of man”, hence she has a wonderful husband, eight younger brothers, and a sneaking suspicion that she may end up with all sons. She loves to read, write, run, and hike in the mountains.

Alexandra is delighted by her opportunities to teach and help her students succeed in achieving their personal goals and ambitions. Please contact her with any questions or interest in taking lessons. She teaches the following subjects:

VIOLIN
Alexandra has been studying the violin for over 20 years, taking lessons primarily from Peggy Wheelwright and John England. She played in the youth violin group Pizzicato Strings and was concert master for her middle school and high school orchestras. Alex completed a music minor at the University of Ut
ah in December 2016 and enjoyed four years with the University Campus Symphony.

A few of Alex’s favorite pieces include Csardas (V. Monti), Symphony Espagnole (Lalo), Theme from Schindler’s List (John Williams) and The Devil Went Down to Georgia (Charlie Daniels).

WRITING
Words are Alexandra's passion, and she graduated in December, 2016 with her Honors B.A. in English. She has written for The Standard Examiner,The Daily Utah Chronicle, and LDSLiving Magazine, publishing a variety of articles and gaining experience in research, interviewing, writing, and editing. She has also worked as a research writer and editor for FamilySearch and has been accepted to present twice at the National Undergraduate Literature Conference. She enjoys writing short stories, personal essays, academic papers, biographies, and basically anything that includes words.

KOREAN
Alexandra learned Korean while serving in South Korea for a year and a half as a missionary for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. While there she taught and studied daily in the Korean language, and upon returning home she started the Korean Studies minor at the University of Utah, which she graduated from in December 2016.

My son, Dade has been taking piano lessons with SooJi for four years now and unfortunately we have to stop as she moved to a new city. She is an absolutely gifted and exceptionally talented pianist and teacher. As a parent, I am engaged in every lesson, observing what my son is learning. Even if when he is tired, not fully prepared, SooJi never stops being kind to him. She always gives helpful tips for effective practice and progress. My son never stops smiling and laughing. Sometimes I join the lesson and also learn stuff and both my and my son just learn tons of new stuff from her lesson. Under SooJi's coaching, my son already finished two solo recitals, 40 minutes each. It is a REAL progress and I was really proud of my son, as he didn't know anything about music before meeting SooJi, and now he is able to play simple songs for people without getting nervous!
I also teach so I know this for sure. Teaching is a natural gift. Someone can be really good at something but might not be good at teaching. SooJi is a total gifted teacher. She knows what to teach, how to teach, what to use, how to deal with students and conflicts, and she is able to solve problems that my son had during practice. Whenever she says something, my son is like " now I got it!" and he is so happy learning from her.
She is an exceptional talent in performing piano as well. I asked her to play in my and my wife's wedding few weeks ago and she played few songs and it was absolutely gorgeous. I am just really sad and disappointed that she is not able to teach him anymore and I can not have fun with them again. But I know she will be literally the best piano teacher ever in whatever years from now. When you see her, you will clearly feel this: she is very professional, yet kind and super funny and silly. She is super talented, yet so humble. She is really good with any kinds of students, she just knows how to treat them differently.
I can see SooJi has a natural gift of teaching, and I do hope she comes back and teach my son again later. Thanks for the four years of teaching SooJi! We love you dear!

She was an outstanding teacher with an exceptional talent in piano performance and teaching. She is very knowledgeable. She stayed focused and she is passionate about the pieces and demonstrated a lot on the pieces. I can also tell she is a very good pianist because she was able to illustrate everything I had to know in such a short amount of time. Another thing I really appreciated was how quickly and fully she was able to communicate with me about the lesson times and any questions I had for playing. I am so thankful for her encouragement, smile, jokes, and all the tips she gave me in the lesson. She is a fantastic teacher for sure, and I definitely recommend her. She surely has a gift of teaching.

Dear SooJi,

You asked for my thoughts on you as a teacher, but I don't think I'll be able to explain those very easily. Your impact on my life is more than I can explain or show. Of all the things I've learned from you, I consider Korean to be of a lesser importance than the life lessons, friendship, and communication skills you've taught me, whether on purpose or not. I'm thankful for everything you've done for me. I'll never forget how understanding and compassionate you are, and I can only hope to grow up and be half the person you are now. In all honesty, you're the best teacher I've ever had, and now I can understand what people mean when they say "This teacher shaped who I am today" and I'll never forget on stop being thankful to them.
Thank you for being you<3 Thank you for being the best Korean/Life teacher <3 Thank you for being the most passionate, true, and honest teacher <3

I have taught English to Koreans back in Seoul for more than 8 years, so I know exactly how different these two languages are.

Based on this understanding of how I need to approach non-Korean speaker especially whose mother tongue is English, I am confident that I can let you start studying Korean the easiest way and make the class fun with lots of introduction of Korean cultures and history.

About Suyoun
Hello! My name is Sue and I've been teaching English to Koreans, Koreans to English speakers since 2007.
From this long experience, I learned how different and opposite these 2 languages are, so I can teach my student how to learn this beautiful Korean language the most efficient way and fun.

How can I make the classes fun? Along with language classes, I will share lots of Korean culture and history, so the students have always interest in the Korean culture. Once you are interested in that culture, it will be inevitable not to learn the language! Always remember! Language and Culture. These are 2 things that never be separated.

Looking forward to seeing you soon!
