About Paul
Paul is a guitarist/songwriter/educator from Branford, CT. He began playing the guitar at age 13 with a strong background in piano. He performed and recorded with bands in high school, during which time he was influenced by a wide variety of musical artists and styles, including Eric Clapton, Jimi Hendrix, The Red Hot Chili Peppers, and Pink Floyd.

Paul enrolled at Boston's Berklee College of Music in the fall of 1994 and discovered a love for jazz, particularly guitarists such as Joe Pass and Tal Farlow and arrangers Nelson Riddle and Gil Evans. At Berklee, Paul continued to study the guitar while working toward a Bachelor of Music degree in Contemporary Writing and Production, which he received in 1998.

After graduating, Paul remained in Boston for several years performing and teaching private guitar lessons. He developed a h
ands-on, practical instruction method that teaches music fundamentals, theory and improvisation through playing and analyzing popular songs. Now back in Connecticut, he continues to teach privately in Branford and the surrounding area. He also performs regularly with his bands, The Syndicate and Debacle on the shoreline and in New York City.

I believe my job as a guitar teacher is to help you get better at whatever you would like to improve. For beginners, that is probably pretty straightforward. After a few lessons, with a little hard work at home, you can be playing songs YOU choose. If you are more experienced, you tell me what you'd like to work on, and I'll give you a specific path to your goals.
I have a pretty laid back teaching style, but I can tell if you've been practicing!

*** Travel Equipment ***
I require my students to have a guitar and a notebook. I bring my guitar and any handouts I might use as well as recordings of music we are working on.

*** Specialties ***
I specialize in blues, rock, funk and some jazz.
Over the years I have developed a hands-on, practical instruction method that teaches music fundamentals, theory and improvisation through playing and analyzing popular songs.
After a solid base of fundamentals, I let the student choose the style and songs.
With some very young children I use Mel Bay's Modern Guitar Method.

About Peter
I am energetic, experienced and creative music teacher with a proven ability to get the very best out of pupils, an expert at identifying the appropriate resources required for a subject matter and ensuring that they are used efficiently and effectively Most of my students read and play simple music after 2-3 classes of active instruction.

I posses an extensive classical music and music pedagogy training. All my musical knowledge and expertise was attained in Eastern Europe. I play and teach piano, upright bass, bass guitar and a range of other instruments. Over the years I taught basic piano, the beginner violin, viola, cello and a variety of school instruments such as recorder and xylophone. I also teach advanced music theory, harmony and basics of composition and orchestral arranging required for music colleges. I especially
find it rewarding working with beginners and the opportunity to show them the amazing world of listening, playing and making music.

The teaching begins with identifying student's musical needs, goals and tastes. Students are taught a stimulating, thorough, and graduated course of recital solos, theory, technical studies, and classic repertoire. For those wishing to pursue more of a classical approach to music, there are proven methods to accomplish that goal established by European master teachers and pedagogues. Also, I can teach the know-how of Jazz and Blues though gradual lessons that cover basic theory, scales and chords up to melody and harmony development.

*** Lesson Details ***
The learning process should be, for the most part, fun and based upon a strong relationship between the teacher and the student. Curriculum and lesson plans are based on student's abilities and aspirations with appropriate balance between theoretical and practical work. The lesson material is always carefully chosen, and when necessary, adapted to specific learning needs.

With a proper approach, everyone can learn to play music. Whether you want to pursue a music career, or just play for fun and enjoyment I can help you attain your goals. From basic piano and stringed instruments, to advanced theory, harmony, composition and improvisation to jazz, pop and rock.

Classes are not based on a single source or book. I provide other exercises in printed form for students to keep and take home.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Two high end digital keyboards, two violins, viola, cello, upright bass, bass guitar and amplifier, music stands, stereo equipment with a large CD collection of just any conceivable music style.. Assorted school instruments: recorder (soprano and tenor), xylophone. Various music charts and a large library of music resources and other books; Extensive e-library and ability to print any required material on the spot. Instant access to many on-line sheet music resources.

*** Travel Equipment ***
Full size and a school grade digital keyboards , bass guitar, amplifier, staff paper and other printed resources, violin, viola, spare parts, maintenance tools and equipment.

*** Specialties ***

Peter got right down to business and it is clear he knows what he is doing. My son is 5 and Peter kept his attention for the full 30 minutes, which is really saying something. At the end of the first lesson, my son was introduced to and could repeat note names; could play a five-note scale; and was learning his right hand from his left. I myself went to Juilliard and Yale for music and am so pleased Peter will be teaching our child(ren).

I had the pleasure of watching Nikiya perform most of her masterpieces! Ranging from classical pieces such as Chopin and also her delicate and beautiful pieces that she had written and composed herself. Never before have I seen such a talent. If you have her as a professor consider yourself very fortunate. She truly cares for each student individually.

About Kendra
I am a musician with an equal passion for performing and teaching. I have taught ages 8-67 at all levels from beginner to advanced. I believe in the importance of teaching a strong core of music fundamentals but I also want to find what makes music special for each individual student. I believe lessons should be fun and engaging, I try to disguise the learning as much as possible.

Lessons are individually tailored to meet the unique needs and interests of each student but here are a few things you can most likely expect to work on: basic music fundamentals like note and rhythm reading, learning/review of musical symbols and terms, good tone production, learning all the notes on the instrument, scales, technique work, and as soon as we have enough notes... FUN songs.

Many of my students lead their school bands and audition successful
ly into regional and honor bands. For students in band at school, the school music and tests will be our first priority but if we get all caught up or extra challenges are needed I will be happy to supply them. I also have recitals for my students 2-3 times a year to give them the opportunity to perform for friends and family and share what they have been learning.

If you are going to purchase an instrument or supplies before the lesson do feel free to ask for help in selecting your materials, there is nothing worse than an instrument that doesn't function properly or needs constant and expensive repairs! If you have any books feel free to bring them to the first lesson, if not then I would be more than happy to make recommendations after the first or second lesson when I've had a chance to assess the student.

About Jake
Hello!

I am currently earning a masters degree in viola performance at The Hartt School, with separate emphases in music theory, conducting, and strings pedagogy.

In the past year, I was a teaching artist at the Incredible Children's Art Network in Santa Barbara, where I was exposed to many teaching methods and techniques, among them the El Sistema method of strings pedagogy. I was also a musical mentor at Santa Barbara Strings, where I led string sectionals, and coached chamber music groups.

Teaching is a great opportunity to get to know a young artist. My primary goal as a teacher has always been to help my students discover their own musical voices. In our lessons together, we will explore your personal musical interests, and I will also introduce you to an applied technical approach to the viola and violin, which I will cater
to your individual technical and musical needs!

My daughter began her first year of violin lessons with Jake at her school when she was in 4th grade . She enjoyed taking lessons with him and remembers discussions they had about the history of the violin. She said he was a good teacher - patient and explained things well. She received a good fundamental background in the violin and that has carried over to her continuing into her second year of lessons.

He forms meaningful relationships with his students and uses his expertise to help their musical development.

Parents: He's responsible, respectful, and genuinely cares for your child's musical development. At the Incredible Children's Art Network, he worked extensively with first-year, beginning violin students (ages 7-9).

Private students: Jake is an accomplished performer, great communicator, and can help you grow musically, while making violin/viola fun.

The double bass is the largest and most daunting instrument in the orchestra, the sheer size can make learning the double bass seem impossible. Through my teaching I break it down step by step and teach my students how to conquer this beautiful instrument. The double bass is the foundation of the orchestra, setting the pitch and rhythm of the entire ensemble. With my lessons I will teach you proper left hand and right hand technique, as well as how to practice on your own, something teachers often overlook. I want my students to be able to problem solve on their own and learn to become their own teacher outside of the lesson so that their growth is limitless!

I have been playing trumpet for over 10 years. I've been gigging around the New Haven area for about two years now, and have played numerous styles. From traditional jazz, to bebop, to New Orleans Second Line, to Funk. Being immersed in these styles has made me very accustomed to playing in those styles, which I will able to share with you!

I'm currently enrolled at Southern Connecticut State University, pursuing a bachelors in Music with plans on getting my masters in music education.

I'm also a "theory-nerd", meaning I have a deep appreciation for music theory, and it's application. From reading sheet music, to identifying scales to use over chords, I will assist you in whatever it is you want to be improved.

Too many times have I taken private lessons from unenthusiastic players that take the process too seriously. Music shou
ld be fun! Which I prioritize in my lessons. I look forward to working with you!
