Hello, I'm Jessica! I can't wait to help you learn more about chess! I've been teaching at the Los Angeles Chess Club and through private lessons for almost two years now and I love watching my students improve. I've been playing chess for many years now and I spend multiple hours a day improving my skills. I know personally what it's like to be both a childhood and an adult learner of chess, and the difficulties involved learning at each age. Within the chess community, there are predetermined notions of how much certain groups (mainly female and adult learners) can achieve, but I believe placing an upward limit on our improvement is greatly detrimental to our growth as players. With the correct guidance and the right amount of encouragement, anyone can become a fantastic player of chess!

In this class, we will discuss what to do in the first part of a chess game: the opening! In chess, it's important to start off strong and in just 30 minutes, I'll help you understand what basic goals you should set yourself in the opening to start the game on the right foot.

Chess is a great hobby for children and adults alike! Learning chess helps develop and improve critical thinking skills, patience, problem solving skills, and memory, as well as being an incredibly fun game to play. I've been playing chess since I was a child, though recently, as an adult, my love for the game truly ignited. I understand how complex of a game chess is, and I will help you gain a strong grasp over the main concepts involved in the game at whatever pace you prefer. I've been teaching chess for over two years now (through private lessons and at the Los Angeles Chess Club) and my lessons are as fun and engaging as they are educational. We will analyze historical chess games, as well as games that you've played, where we'll learn about common openings, tactical motifs, mating patterns, theoretical endgames, and so much more in our lessons. Whether this is your first time seeing a chess board in your whole life or if you've been a casual player for years, I can help you develop a deeper understanding of all aspects of the game.

Super easy 5 stars. "Chess with Jess" is my favorite time of the week. I've been meeting with her for just a couple of months, and I've already seen my rating climb and my play improve significantly. She's very open-minded about how we spend our time, so you really just need to help her understand your chess goals and she'll do whatever it takes to get you there. And outside of the chess itself, Jess is great with communicating about lessons, payments, etc., and she's just generally super supportive. I'll sometimes send her games mid-week and text her my thoughts, and she'll review them and be encouraging. Also, she's very understanding of my super busy schedule. If I didn't have time to play much chess this week, she's totally understanding and just wants to be supportive. I can't recommend her enough to anyone who wants to make a formal study of chess part of their week!
