Justine D.

San Diego, CA

About Justine

I love music and believe in its ability to bring people together. It's been a part of my life since I was 5, practicing piano at home in Michigan.

Music was a big part of every single one of my school years, and I was lucky enough to be able to double major in music and psychology at Kalamazoo College once I graduated from high school.

My passion for music has taken me abroad, to London, where I studied Western & Russian art music and took classes in popular music studies at Goldsmiths College, University of London.

It spurred my move across the country to New York, where I developed
a better understanding of how important creativity is to all of us -- especially musicians! -- at Teachers College, Columbia University.

And, most importantly, it's allowed me to do what I love from my home in San Diego, teaching privately both in-person and online. I've recently moved to private teaching full-time and couldn't be happier!

I'm excited to get started with you and help you set and reach your musical goals!

*** Online & In-Person Lesson Details ***
It's most important to me that you are excited and motivated about your music lessons! I am a flexible instructor and am always open to hearing your ideas for songs. After working together to identify your beginning knowledge of music and your instrument, we'll progress from song to song to develop your musical abilities.

All of my online and in-person lessons begin by warming up with a quick exercise, scale, or even an improvisational activity. We'll use the music you love to develop your guitar technique, learn new chords, and sharpen your listening skills.

You'll gain an understanding of what makes the music work and why the notes, rhythms, and harmonies are what they are.

The music we study can also serve as inspiration for creativity. I may ask you to come to the next class with a short composition of your own or we'll finish a lesson by improvising together on related musical themes.

I'll do my best to make my expectations for you clear and at the end of every lesson, we'll go over what we accomplished together and make sure you understand what to work on before our next class.

*** Additional Online Information ***

Online lessons can be just as effective as in-person lessons for teaching you the basics of your instrument, developing technique, and achieving your musical goals! I'll use screen sharing to display music, chords, and scale charts during the lessons. Materials will be emailed to you as well for you to use at home. And communication is extra important when it comes to online lessons; because I can't make physical adjustments, I'll often assess how you hold your musical instrument and describe how you can make the adjustments yourself.

Please note that a high-speed internet connection is needed in order to make sure that we can see and hear each other appropriately. In addition, I expect that you will be able to provide your own musical instrument (and amplifier, if you have an electric instrument) to use during the lesson.

*** Additional In-Person Information ***
I teach my in-person lessons from my home office with comfortable seating for both students and parents. I expect that you will be able to provide your own musical instrument to use during the lesson.

I will have music stands available for use during lessons and will accompany and demonstrate on my musical instruments. I will have an amplifier and cables, but if you prefer to bring your own amplifier you can do that, too!

Please note that I have two cats; they'll be in an enclosed room away from where we will have lessons, but if you have cat allergies this may not be a good fit.

Francis R.

San Diego, CA

About Francis

Hi everyone! I'm a hard-working musician with a background in live performance, songwriting, composition, and home recording. I want to help you perform the music you love, whether you're playing to your family, your webcam, or a 15,000 seat arena. I have been teaching private music lessons since 2007.

I am a graduate of UCSD, where I completed my bachelor's degree in music theory and composition. I have taken years of private lessons, played bass, guitar, and mandolin in local and touring bands, and released three albums of original music. I want to make your goals accessible.

*** Les
son Details ***
I focus on making lessons fun for my students. I emphasize the importance of practicing on your own and building confidence by performing live and/or writing your own songs. I love to help people get better at sounding like themselves.

During lessons from me, you can expect to play, sing, clap your hands, and become completely immersed in the music you love. Whether your goal is to perform in front of an audience, record albums, or just play for fun in your living room, I'll help you make that happen.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Music room, seating available, street parking.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I only teach students who provide their own instrument. I am willing to provide a loaner guitar for the week if a student's instrument needs to be repaired or is not accessible for any reason. I also provide homework when necessary :)

*** Specialties ***
I specialize in teaching confidence in performance practices, technique, singing and playing, and good microphone habits for singing, speaking, and recording, and songwriting. I teach based on student needs, and I find each student benefits from a different curriculum.

Francis has been just fantastic as my first ever singing teacher. He completely made me feel at ease, provided me with material to practice in between lessons, and is just a genuinely nice guy to be around. He provided good and intuitive help to improve my singing, and I fell I have improved lightyears in just a few weeks.

It was a very productive lesson. Ben was able to teach a lot of things in the limited time given, and he gives enough material to work on that can easily last me a week. He makes his lessons enjoyable and educational at the same time.

Although it was the first lesson , It is obvious Ben is very good on teaching. His approach is totally according to student's needs and level (it is very important!) He is very kind person and explains the things very well .My 13 years old daughter liked his teaching so much. Most important for us,was He does not start with boring cliches which you can find anywhere in the planet . You start to play with Ben from the first lesson. He is also very cooperative and flexible and open for the new ideas and requests. I strongly recommend him for all level guitarists , especially who already knows a few things and wants to improve to next level . Regards

I am an experienced pianist and flutist, but I wanted to learn the violin for the sake of my soul! Ms. Madeline was able to craft a custom-designed lesson plan that perfectly matched my own needs and musical level. She is fun, laughs a lot, and the lesson flies by. I'm inspired to practice, and can't wait until our next lesson. I am especially impressed with her own level of musical ability, as I have seen her perform in numerous orchestra, ballet and opera performances. She is a gem!

I played guitar in middle school and began to learn violin in 10th grade. Madeline helped me learn scales and studies, and encouraged me to practice by awarding me with special arrangements (my favorites being Lord of the Rings and the Legend of Zelda theme songs.) As a freshman in college now, I'm studying biology but still participating in a local community orchestra. Madeline made lessons fun, and helped me with my AP music theory homework too. Strongly recommended.

Adrián T.

San Diego, CA

About Adrián

Adrián : Born on October 17, 1975, and raised in Chihuahua, Chihuahua, México, Adrian T. grew up surrounded by the traditional music of Central America from Danzón, Boleros and Rumba, to Son and Mambo. Adrián began developing his musical ability starting at the age of eleven. He was inclined to play the tenor saxophone and the flute with an understanding of classical music and a distinct attraction to jazz, and five years later chose to take on the clarinet. His grandmother, a "Danzón Nut" according to Adrián, urged her grandson in that direction, but the young player was adamant towards a new
found paragon for himself: John W. Coltrane.

2001 was a year that would have a profound impact on Adrián’s music. While pursuing Sociology and Music Studies at The University of Texas, El Paso, he learned more about the transmission of these ideas and theories through music. In an effort to track the development of marked philosophical and spiritual traditions observed by ancient cultures, Adrián arranged to meet, learn, and creatively collaborate with musicians involved with traditions originating from West Africa. One of his primary interests was the Yoruba tradition (predominantly out of Western Nigeria), the ancient African religion underlying Santeria (Cuba and Puerto Rico), Candombl (Baha, Brazil), Vodun (Haiti), and Cu Taan (México).

THE MARS VOLTA

In 2004 Adrián joined The Mars Volta recording the studio album, “Frances the Mute”, and continues to work with the band (as a full-fledged member) on subsequent albums (“Live Scabdates” 2005, “Amputechture” 2006, “The Bedlam in Goliath” 2008) and all of The Mars Volta side projects (movie scores, DVD‘s, etc.). The Mars Volta is comprised of guitarist Omar A. Rodriguez-Lopez, lyricist/vocalist Cedric Bixler-Zavala, bassist John Alderete, guitarist Paul Hinojos-González, drummer Thomas Pridgen, percussionist Marcel Rodriguez-Lopez, and keyboardist Isaiah “Ikey” Owens.

Through his work with The Mars Volta, Adrián went on to earn his first Grammy Award in 2008 for the “Best Rock Performance” category with the song "Wax Simulacra". Working with The Mars Volta has enabled Adrián to gain further exposure as a multi-instrumentalist, particularly in Europe.

Television performances of The Mars Volta include (but not limited to): The Henry Rollins Show, The Tonight Show with David Letterman, and The BBC.
THE STUDIO/TOURING MUSICIAN

Adrián ’s solid performance and versatility have allowed him many opportunities to collaborate with a vast array of professionals worldwide. Adrián has shared the stage and/or recorded with the likes of Larry Harlow, Antonio Sánchez, Bob Sheppard, Edwin Livingston, Erik A. Unsworth, Dr. Willy Hill, Dr. Donald G. Wilkinson, Damo Suzuki, Lenny Castro, Money Mark Nishita, Los Lobos, EMI Gospel Artist Smokie Norful, Lisa Papineau (Big Sir), Omar A. Rodriguez-Lopez Quintet/Group (Se Dice Bisonte, No Búfalo 2007, music scoring for the Guillermo Arriaga Jordan and Jorge Hernández Aldana film on El Búfalo de la Noche on La Neta Films/Naco Films performed by The Mars Volta), Hans Glawishing, John Beasley, Brian Lynch, Shaila Dúrcal, John Frusciante, Tosin Abasi (Animals As Leaders), Ken Schalk, Juliette Lewis, Nuriya Michan, Deantoni Parks, Candiria, The Memorials, Trevor Hall, Oscar Stagnaro, Billy Ray Cyrus, David "Fuze" Fiuczynski and Freedom Bremner of Screaming Headless Torsos, Pete Escobedo, Oskar Cartaya, Hadrien Feraud, and Luis Conte among others.

Adrián 's professional involvement with the music industry has continued to develop under his own publishing and record label, EL REGIMEN Music BMI, leading T.R.A.M. and as a full flesh member of one of the strongest lineups in funk music The Earful. This dignified and prolific musician collaborates with an eclectic number of international musicians, tours internationally on an intense and annual schedule, all the while teaching workshops to numerous school districts and universities around the world.

T.R.A.M.

It's extremely rare to come across a band that flips the script of conventionality, throwing caution to the wind. The debut effort from T.R.A.M. does just that, while blazing a trail of creativity quick to turn heads throughout the world. This unit will easily be referred to by many as a “Super Group”. However, the members of this dynamic unit aren't in this for any reason other than to use it as a platform to further express their art without limitations or any preconceived notions.

T.R.A.M. is comprised of such renowned and musically proficient artists as Adrián (The Mars Volta) on saxophone, flute, bass clarinet and percussion, Javier Reyes (Animals As Leaders) on guitar, Tosin Abasi (Animals As Leaders) on guitar, and Eric Moore II (Suicidal Tendencies) on drums. This is a group of likeminded individuals that are naturally gifted with the collaboration of their unique talents resulting in something truly amazing. Their much anticipated debut album, “Lingua Franca”, was released February 2012 through Sumarian Records.

Adrián states:

“Tosin Abasi and I were originally introduced by a mutual friend, Raanen Bozzio (Terry Bozzio's son), summer of 2010. This meeting also served as my first introduction to Animals As Leaders and Javier Reyes. Since then, Abasi, Reyes, and I have developed a great relationship. We got together almost every day to try out ideas, and after a month we had already formulated a majority of the record. At this point we contacted Eric Moore, an incredible drummer and the most joyful person to be around, and soon everything we had envisioned rhythmically came together on our first meeting/recording session (at the Farias Productions Studios) on what is now T.R.A.M…

I never know how people will respond to our music, I just never know! My goal is to try to instill a strong feeling or energy in people and I feel that collectively we achieved this goal tenfold with this new project. We all have a great enthusiasm and desire to perform this material live and see this band further develop. We look forward to hearing what you all think of it.”

TRANSIENT

A concept ensemble with its roots in west coast music, TRANSIENT performs original music inspired by the tradition of Jazz and Chamber Music on today's world. This genuine ensemble led by saxophonist Adrian (The Mars Volta, T.R.A.M. and The Earful) followed by cellist Artyom Manukyan (Peter Erskine and Draco Rosa), trumpeter Mike Cottone (Everette Harp, and Rick Braun), and on the drums the powerful young lion Tim "Figg" Newton, brings a collection of original compositions written as a story line of work of solid experimental material and improvisation. Translating the live performance into the world of sound,

TRANSIENT exists as a unique new voice comprised of some of creative music's fearless players on the globe.

I've known Adrian for many years, and you won't find anyone more dedicated to the Saxophone and Flute - I mean what you see (and hear) is what you get! He's in it for the long haul and willing to share his vast amount of experience.

I haven't taken continuous lessons from him, but I had the pleasure of hiring him to play and he's jammed with a bunch of my friends who play professionally. Adrian has been and always be someone I look up to to always provide tips and technique improvement suggestions. He does this with a true humble spirit. He meets you wherever you live musically and builds upon what you've already got.

Adrian is a talented Musician who can instantly engage an audience and keep them connected through his Music. If I had more time, I would take lessons from him regularly. He has so much to share musically and does it with a giving spirit.

Keep up the good work Adrian! I know the future is bright for you and all of your Students!

Composition
Adrian has been a major part of my knowledge of woodwind composition. As a song writer/artist, i've hired Adrian to help score and perform on many recordings for me.

Adrian plays all saxes, flute and clarinets and i can't thank him enough for his
wisdom and instructional guidance in gaining a broader understanding for how to make those instruments work in my music.

Thank You Adrian, Cheers!!!!
