I've been playing guitar for 28 years and teaching for 10 years, music is my passion. Born and raised in New York, I grew up in a musical household as my mother was a professional piano player in New York and I was exposed to the industry at an early age. After leaving college in New York, I moved to San Jose, California and stumbled across a music book, studied it and taught myself guitar. I went on to play with professional musicians at The Musical Institute in Hollywood, California. From there I've played with a number of local bands and am fluent in the genres of Christian music, all types of Rock, Folk, Pop, Country, Blues, and Reggae. I am able to learn songs by ear and transpose them, as well as teaching from music books in a simple, easy manner for my students to play successfully their favorite songs. My passion for music is d
isplayed in my easy going and patient style of teaching making music fun to play. Acoustic and electric guitars (6 and 12 string) are my preferred instruments.

Excellent teacher

Marty is a fantastic teacher. He’s been great teaching my 14 year old daughter. He’s very patient and makes playing the guitar so simple for her. The first lesson he really was interested in what SHE wanted to eventually be able to play, then taught her some basics and a few simple cords. By the end of the lesson, she was playing a simple song and was so excited. Also very respectful to me as her parent and has a gentle, non-aggressive personality making us both very comfortable. My daughter now even is writing her own songs and playing guitar to them. I would highly recommend Marty as a guitar teacher, he really knows what he’s doing.

I use a book that I really like but of course I add other materials when I think it is suitable for my student. Each student learns differently so I adapt to his learning style and to his needs.

About me, I have been playing the guitar for more than 20 years. I studied at the conservatory of Music in Paris. In San Francisco, I studied and played with many great jazz musicians and teachers. I have also studied Theory/ composition, electronic music and voice.
I hold a degree in English literature and currently teaches also at the French American School in San Francisco.

As a teacher I expect the best of you but I also know that we all learn differently and at a different pace. As a beginner, you will learn to read and play at the same time by learning simple melodies and simple chords right away. As an intermediate/ advance, we will take it from where you stopped and will continue to move forward according to your needs and goals. I can also teach the lesson in French.

My lessons focus first on understanding the instrument by playing simple melodies. Then I applied the theory learnt by learning songs. For more advanced players, I can teach to play solo guitar how to harmonize the melodic note with chords. For students who are interested in singing and playing, I can coach them.

Soraya was very patient with my daughters though they didn't practice enough, still she encouraged them and tried adapting her approach to enliven their interest. She's not a clock watcher either and usually went over time to be sure they had a handle on that days lesson.

For Beginner students: we will start by exploring rhythm concepts and understanding how to read music. Learning the physics of the guitar and exploring the notes in the first few positions. Learning open position chords, and simple chords progressions, major and pentatonic scales,etc.

For Intermediate students: we will continue expanding our knowledge of the higher positions of the guitar, as well as develop better sight-reading skills. Now residing in the San Francisco Bay Area, Hristo leads a variety of modern jazz formations, ranging from duets to quintets. The record presents a unique blend of ECM-style modern jazz, classical, and Brazilian tone textures, and showcases the completely unique and masterful interpretation of the jazz idiom by each one of its members. In late 2009, Hristo released his second studio album featuring Latin Grammy-nominated pianist Weber Iago. The Secrets of an Angel is an impressionistic landscape painted by the delightful and graceful conversation between the two instruments (guitar/piano).

In 2010 Hristo wrote a large scale jazz work (The Perperikon Suite) especially to be premiered at the 53rd Monterey Jazz Festival. This 7 movements jazz suite is inspired by the ancient Thracian city of Perperikon (located on the territory of Bulgaria), and combines orchestral, classical, jazz, and fusion elements depicting the history and mystery of this enchanting place. The work marks Hristo third album and one of his most adventurous and sophisticated works up to date. For the recording of this project the Hristo Quartet was joined by virtuoso vibraphonist and multi-instrumentalist Christian Tamburr.
As jazz critic Dan Bilawsky describes: “Shimmering harmonies resonate throughout these modern jazz marvels, and the soloists work their way around and through this accessible and exciting music with equal measures of taste, technique and spirit. His pieces are peppered with signpost sonorities and ideas that often reappear throughout a given song, creating a sense of continuity and thematic steadiness that develops around individual soloists. I design my lessons with the specific student goals in mind.

For Beginner students: we will start by exploring rhythm concepts and understanding how to read music. Learning the physics of the guitar and exploring the notes in the first few positions. Learning open position chords, and simple chords progressions, major and pentatonic scales,etc.

For Intermediate students: we will continue expanding our knowledge of the higher positions of the guitar, as well as develop better sight-reading skills. Bar cords and chord transposition, and music theory. Expanding our scalar vocabulary to modes, and minor scales. Learning arpeggios and classical etudes.

For Advance students: Close interval voicings, jazz improvisation, chord to scale relationships, and harmonic substitutions are some of the concepts we will cover. Learning solo guitar playing (chord melody), incorporating walking bass lines, transcription skill and arranging skills.

I told Kristina it was my first lesson, and that I wanted to learn how to strum. She taught me some chords and how to read tabs, which was great. But she spent most of the lesson writing out the tabs (would've been great if she did that before) and watching me strum. She made no corrections as to my thumb or finger placement, which a friend later told me was really bad for a teacher to not pay attention to. Her advice on how to find the best position was to "figure out what works for you". How would I know that as a beginner? Maybe she's better for someone with more experience.

I have been playing guitar since I was 10 and loving music my whole life. I have been in numerous rock bands, the high-school jazz band, classical guitar duos, trios, chamber ensembles, and even played mandolin in a bluegrass band. I received my Bachelor of Music at Guilford College as a student of Kami Rowan. During my third year of study there, I was nominated for the Guilford College Art Award as the outstanding student and performer in the music department. Amongst many other approaches of teaching music, I try to instill the 3 most lacking areas most musicians usually have to begin.

1. Sight reading: Unfortunately most common with guitarists! Tablature is a somewhat useful way to start but reading music will open many doors and opportunities for any musician

2. Collaboration: A teacher provides one way of collaboration as well as a band or an ensemble at school or in the community.

3. Improvisation: I provide a music theory background and I have a method plan for chord progressions, and help with learning the entire guitar.

Ken is an awesome teacher and an great person. He teaches my 5 year daughter and she loves his lessons and his jovial approach. Within 4 weeks, she has picked up a lot of things and is improving day by day. He is patient as you ought to be with the kids and yet persistent enough to stick to the task.

I am really looking forward to them picking up songs in the coming lessons. I will recommend him anytime and completely vouch for his credentials and ability as an excellent guitarist as well as teacher.

To be honest, I'm here to encourage people to play their guitar. So, I'm mostly going to work on the things you want to work on. In terms of my experience, I have been playing for almost 10 years. I started as a self-taught guitarist in high school and then I decided to actually study music in college. So, if you have theory questions I'll be happy to help.
My methods aren't too strict like classical guitarists. However, I do have specific exercises on how to practice more effectively and other things like chord studies. Again, I'm mainly here for you to learn how to play your favorite song, or how to be able to jam with other guitarists and so on.
