About Mike
Passionate abut music from a very young age, I began taking drum lessons when I was nine and quickly became interested in expanding my musical horizons. After High School I attended Musicians Institute in Hollywood, CA. This was an amazing experience for me because it not only improved my musical abilities but also showed me new and effective ways to teach. Since then I have had a chance to implement and hone these teaching techniques through over ten years of teaching private lessons to students of all ages and backgrounds.

Over the years I have played guitar, bass, and drums for various bands in styles ranging from jazz and blues to hard core. I currently play with the Bethany Ambassadors, a travelling gospel choir at Bethany University. Having played music of many styles in live situations at fairs, parks, wine festival
s, and many other venues, I believe that versatility is integral to a musician's growth and reflect that mentality in my private lessons.

*** Lesson Details ***
Because I have been on the receiving end of many different teaching styles and personalities, I understand that sometimes something may need to be explained or explored in a number of different ways before it "clicks" with a student. In my private lessons I promote a laid back yet focused atmosphere where the student is comfortable with experimenting; making mistakes and learning from them without embarrassment. When learning to play an instrument, technique is extremely important because it facilitates speed and accuracy later on. My lessons are generally divided between technique exercises and practical applications.

During lessons I will write out various exercises and information that the student can take home with them to learn and practice. I also will be using various books and incorporating them into my curriculum. Occasionally I will recommend that a student purchase a book but most of the time I will simply photocopy a page and let the student take it home with them. My lessons are very progress-oriented and the student will always be working towards one of a series of goals; with each goal the student reaches they will gain the confidence and technical ability to pursue the next.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Drum set and amps

*** Specialties ***
At Musicians Institute I learned many different stick techniques from world champion rudimental snare drummer Rob Carson. I teach very similarly to the way I was taught at MI.

About Neil
I am a Jazz Guitarist / Composer / Arranger / and Band Leader and teacher who has been working in the greater San Francisco Bay area for the past 10 years. Originally from the East Coast and Chicago I arrived in California in 1992. I hold a Master's Degree in music from San Jose State University where I majored in Jazz guitar performance and composition / arranging. I have been passionately teaching guitar for the past 12 years to students of all ages. My goal is to teach you the music YOU want to learn while expanding your musical awareness. I am a patient and understanding teacher who will attempt to inspire students while pushing them to their playing potential. In addition to teaching I lead by example performing regularly in various Jazz ensembles. I have released a CD of original works entitled “Rivers Converge.”

*** Lesson Details
***
I have played and studied extensively the styles of Jazz, Rock, Blues, Classical, electric and acoustic guitar. I begin lessons by teaching students the fundamentals of the instrument and after a basic grasp of the guitar is developed I encourage students to learn songs / styles of their choice so that the musical experience is fun for them. In the first few months beginning students will learn the architecture of the guitar: string names & numbers, finger numbers, fret numbers, tablature, chord diagrams, basic time signatures, strum patterns, chord charts. I divide guitar playing into 3 major principles: Lead playing / improvisation, Chord playing / accompaniment, and Melody / note reading. Lessons will reflect the development of these principles. Scales and arpeggios and music theory lead to improvisation. Chord playing, chord progressions, open chords, bar chords, & power chords are used to play rhythm guitar in songs of the student’s choice. Melody playing is developed through learning to read music. For reading studies I utilize the Hal Leonard Guitar method for beginners and William Levitt’s Modern Method for guitar for more advanced students.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Converted room in garage w/ seating for parents.

*** Travel Equipment ***
students should have guitar, music stand and two armless chairs

*** Specialties ***
I specialize in Jazz, Blues, and Rock styles but am equipped to teach beginning classical guitar as well. I try to combine technique and music reading with the learning of songs that interest the student.

Andrew is a great teacher. He's very methodical and teaches theory right from the beginning. He draws musical notes and beats nicely on the board and plays along with the student in his ukulele. My six year old son started reading music the first day.

I liked his his studio - it is lovely with so many instruments! Looks like he teaches several instruments.

About Natalie
My name's Natalie, and I'm a voice and flute teacher! I studied Vocal Performance and Flute Performance at the University of California Santa Cruz, and got my Masters of Music in Vocal Arts at the University of Southern California Thornton School of Music.

I specialize in classical voice and opera, though I believe a good vocal technical foundation is applicable to all musical styles. I also teach music theory, for those just getting into music, and for those who would appreciate a refresher. Since I studied both flute and voice, I am especially well trained in breath management and alignment. The breath is the most important thing in both flute and voice. It's what sends our sound out into the world!

Ahmad is very passionate about teaching guitar. I've been playing guitar for last 2 year and with Ahmad, I've learnt much more in couple of months than I learnt in 2 years putting me on the Fast track. He has a very structured teaching approach, He breaks down complex techniques in small modules, which enabled me to learn quickly and everything is reviewed in the following class. Ahmad tailored the guitar lessons according to my skills and interests.
He is a great teacher and I highly recommend him for guitar lesson.
