About Colin
I'm a life-long musician with a passion for the art and a love of teaching it. In 2012, I graduated from Sacramento State with a Bachelors in Music. Through my schooling and personal study, I have become a well-rounded musician able to teach many instruments effectively. Making music with others at a high level, teaching, and having the opportunity to perform professionally around the Sacramento area has been a great experience. I look forward to continuing that journey, growing as a person and musician, and being a positive role-model for others!

I've been playing trumpet nearly my entire life, and studied it in college. However, I am a multi-instrumentalist and currently teach trumpet, guitar, piano, and trombone. I specialize in classical style, but can also teach jazz theory, correct swing style, articulation, etc. I have
studied with multiple music professors and have learned their most effective teaching methods. I have taken music theory classes that allow me to explain theory in a simplified manner to students. I have been playing guitar since high school and have taken many piano classes while in school, where proficiency is necessary in order to advance in the major. In my free time, I even play drums and multiple other instruments and listen to music constantly. Music is very much my life. This allows me the versatility to teach a variety of instruments and mold myself and my students into well-rounded musicians.

I have had experience with quite a few teachers over the years, and none have quite felt the same as Colin. He is knowledgeable, educated and personally very talented at his instruments, and he prepares well for his lessons and always thinks of creative/well planned approaches for each student's individual needs. He seems to invest in each studio member on a personal level, which is sadly not terribly common. The fact that he is also a working professional performing and making music out in the community makes him an even more rare asset to have. I would highly recommend him for your or your child's instructional needs.

Mikaela helped ramp my daughter from having no clarinet experience to being a fairly proficient player ready for the school band, in less than a school year. Mikaela is friendly, points out little things that help make big improvements in my daughter's playing, and keeps checking on the basics as well (embouchure, finger positioning, etc). Mikaela has been very flexible and has a good teaching manner and attitude which has made my daughter's clarinet learning experience a very positive one. We look forward to continuing to work with Mikaela!

With more than 30 years of teaching experience for the cello, I have taught students of all ages, throughout California and overseas. I earned a Bachelor's degree and a Master's degree in Cello Performance and am currently the Principal cellist for the Camellia Symphony, California. In addition, I am teaching all levels of cello and beginner violin lessons to my students in Folsom, Napa and Sacramento.

My professional performing experience began in Medellin, Colombia in 1985 with the Medellin Philharmonic Orchestra where I was their Soloist beginning in 1992 and later on, as First Cello, from 1998-2002.

While in Colombia, I also performed with the Antioquia Symphonic Orchestra and the Antioquia Chamber Orchestra from 1991-1999.

I left my hometown of Medellin to come to the United States where I performed with the
Texas Christian University Orchestra in Fort Worth, Texas in 2000. Returning to Medellin, I spent the next year with the Eafit Symphonic Orchestra.

Finally, I settled in Sacramento in 2003, coming here to earn my Master's Degree in Cello Performance while performing throughout the next year with the California State University, Sacramento Symphony.

In Sacramento, I have also performed with the Sacramento Metropolitan Orchestra and with several other chamber groups.

At this time, I am teaching all levels of cello and beginner violin. My students range in age from six to seventy years and enjoy learning in a relaxing environment at their own pace.

I incorporate several different teaching styles to meet each students' individual needs and abilities.

Before entering Baylor University as a music major, I won numerous awards in piano, voice and trumpet. At Baylor, I majored in voice and studied with Richard Robinson, opera star on the west coast and was Stravinsky's favorite tenor. I also studied piano with Dr. Michael Ard where I learned the world renowned "Taubman Approach" to playing the piano. I studied conducting with Michael Haithcock (currently director of bands at University of Michigan) and Dr. Hugh Sanders (past president of the American Directors Choral Association). I was also a member of the Baylor University Golden Wave Band for 4 years and studied trumpet. I studied organ with Dr. Joyce Jones.

Before coming to California to pursue my Masters in Music, I taught Junior High School choir in Texas for three years. I have over 30 years of professional music experience
and have taught and directed numerous choirs and orchestras in California and Minnesota. I am available to teach piano, voice, trumpet and organ.

John's wonderful!! Great communication, right on time and most importantly great with our daughter! Clearly he's classically trained and then some. From what I heard, he made it interesting and kept her attention. He didn't dawdle anywhere too long and showed her what a piece could sound like when practiced and perfected. That's incentive.

I mainly sing opera but I can sing and teach Jazz, Musical Theater, and Pop. I am very passionate about music and singing and would love to be able to pass that passion on to my students. To me singing is a form of expression and a way to connect to the world around us. It is also a fun way to be creative and to take a step away from our daily lives. I sing because I love it and I hope that I can help my students do the same.

I was part of a Beginner Guitar group lesson with Todd. In that class, he managed to give us all personal attention. Since then, I've had a weekly lesson for years and he's always had me progressing at my own rate. I like how we spend our time with a quick review of whatever it is I've been learning before we move on to something new. It's amazing how much we pack into a lesson. Todd is always very flexible with whatever I want to learn so we can take detours into favorite songs or artists (and we even added a bit of harmonica at my request). Even if I pick a difficult piece he can adapt it to my skill level (and then add the complexity as I progress). And through it all, he has shown endless good humor and patience.
