After more than 25 years of teaching at music camps, music stores, 3 colleges and my home, I completely understand that the lessons are all about YOU, the student: what you want to learn, taught to you in a way that works for your brain and personality.
And if you don't know exactly what you want to learn, that's OK. We can figure that out together as we go along learning the basics.
I help students learn to play songs by artists they like.
I also help students write songs, or put chords to their existing lyrics.
For those who are interested, I teach note-reading (not required) and theory (not required) and ear training (not required).
The lessons are always tailored towards your (the student's) goals.
I also teach classical and fingerstyle guitar for the occasional person who specifically wants
My purpose as a teacher: help people have a fun experience, learning in an organized way, adapted to your learning style and goals, while learning to do exactly what you wanted to do when you decided you wanted to play the guitar.
In 1994, I was let go from my job at a music store because I was sick. Which sounds awful, but was the best thing to ever happen to me- it was then I got over my fears and became a full-time musician, teaching and writing and performing. I have never looked back! I may not be a household name, but I am living the dream.
Whether you want to sing to your kids or play for an audience of 50,000, or just play guitar for yourself, you first have to get started.
Wait no longer! The guitar is calling!

In just the handful of lessons I have had so far my level has jumped further than expected.
Carla has been very helpful with the "tricky-bits" that have caused me issues. Helped to remedy them and move on.
Look no further for a great teacher, better yet I'll keep her to myself.
Music has allowed me to explore the world, as well as my own creativity and my relationship to others. I am eager to share these gifts! I can offer lessons in:
--Guitar... my specialty is fingerpicking, folk and blues, but I am a lover of all music and happy to teach anything!)
--Voice... I have experience in classical, soul/r&b, musical theatre, contemporary, etc.
--Piano... beginner students only
--Accompaniment and Performance skills

I have had just 3 lessons with Ellen thus far, and am reading sheet music like a wiz and gaining more and more confidence each lesson with my finger placement and now bowing.
Ellen has a wonderful system of teaching that truly makes everything she exposes you to stick, and has been getting me very excited to continue on knowing that I am in good hands and will progress quickly because of it. I will most definitely continue to see Ellen.

My home growing up was full of music. My father first saw my mother when she was leading songs at a Shabbat service in Berkeley, CA. He always says he fell in love with her voice before anything else. The sounds of singing and guitar playing permeated my childhood. I went on to study music at Stanford University and receive my Master's degree in opera from the University of Georgia. During my education, I performed extensively in opera, musical theater, and choral ensembles including
Since graduating, I have collaborated with internationally renowned pedagogues and singers including Nova Thomas, Frederick Burchinal, and Kathryn Wright. I have also sung under the batons of Bradley Moore, Lance Inouye, and George Manahan. These experiences have taught me the importance of contextualizing creative expression within professionalism, a characteristic I always seek to impart to my students.
As a pedagogue, I always want my students to find ease, joy, and authenticity of character with every piece of music they sing. We achieve this goal through both hard work and creative exploration. I spend equal attention focusing on technique and storytelling, as one is meaningless without the other. I can't wait to help you find your authentic voice!
