America's New Music Mecca
Since relocating to Charlotte, North Carolina, I have newly designed and created a Music Theatre class for an elementary school that incorporates songwriting skills and musicianship. This class allows students to improve certain notes or chords. For example, if I play a major chord they would all smile as if they were happy, and if I played a minor chord they would be sad. This does a few things; it allows the students to connect their feelings with the music, helps them during plays with their acting abilities, and also it is an ear training tool which is good to start at a young age. Additionally, group songwriting is incorporated in which students write a line or two, brainstorm, create a song, sing it all together, and eventually record the song. The kids love to have a copy, so they can listen to themselves singing the song they wrote. These positive tools help motivate students to potentially want to continue learning about music, which can be the case for students seeking guitar or any other type of music lessons in Charlotte.
Since teaching guitar lessons in Charlotte, the music scene here has exploded for several reasons. First, Charlotte is the fastest growing city in the US and the population consists of many people in their late twenties to early thirties. This age group is very attractive for bands who want to tap into a new market. Second, the beautiful year around weather allows national bands to take advantage of the out door amphitheatres, which Charlotte has built right in the city. Third, the general vibe and support for live music in the city is like none I have ever seen before. There are national touring acts in the city every single night. There is no other city in the US that has big name national acts every night of the week. When I moved to Charlotte, I saw the Beastie Boys at Amos's, Flogging Molly at the Phillmore, Buckcherry at the Music Factory, and Jimmy Buffet at the Amp. The city of Charlotte itself is responsible for bringing such events to the city and it is easy to find when and where bands are playing. Charlotte also encourages major events, such as the Carolina Rebellion. This includes 18 National acts in one day at the Carolina Metro. Do not want to miss that! Also, open mic nights are available for beginners, but also for the seasoned veteran looking to win studio time or even cash.
Since moving to Charlotte, I have been embraced and encouraged at the local venues by fellow musicians who are all trying to accomplish the same thing, which is to have a good time and listen to good music. I also encourage the students I teach guitar lessons to in Charlotte to always have a good time.
