AWESOME I so enjoy working with Karen! In advance of today’s lesson, we coordinated re work on a summer shawl Project. We both thought a summer shawl addressing those summer air conditioned restaurants was a good project for folks like me that travel a bunch and need take along projects. With Karen’s guidance in mind, I bought gthe yarn. Then Karen showed me 6-9 different shawls she’s made so I could pick target shawl pattern that wasn’t above my ability and appealed to me. I’m now on my way; 3+Rows in and feeling confident of noteworthy progress til next session.
Beth
Encouraging, supportive, first class instructor. I signed up for lessons after I realized the kit I bought was above my knowledge level. It's been an awesome experience. I am more confident in reading instructions and making the (pattern specified) numerous different stitches. F2F lessons is the best; its been an awesome experience. I will take more lessons from Karen - she's just that good; a real gem for "take lessons".

Delightful! Karen was patient, professional and full of ideas. Looking forward to my next session.

I've been sewing my entire life and while I'm new to teaching in a formal setting I've been helping my friends and classmates with sewing since I was in high school. I can teach you basics like how to sew a button and we can work our way up to sewing an outfit.

I can teach you: building (sewing a item of clothing from scratch), altering, tailoring, repairing, embroidery, beading, prop making, hand stitching, machine stitching, how to use a serger, how to read and use patterns, how to plan a project, how to draft a basic pattern, beginner upholstery, and what I call "make it work" sewing tricks for when you don't have fancy equipment or supplies.

If you have a specific project (I'm looking at you, cosplayers and diy Halloween enthusiasts) or if you want to learn a skill that you will use for the rest of your life. I can help.

About Kathren

I'm a grad student at George Washington University who just moved to the DC area from Chicago, and I'm originally from Texas. I'm a maker who specializes in sewing but I dabble in many other media. I learned everything I know by choosing a project and learning what I needed to to complete that pr

Japanese Original Traditional Origami

Origami (Ori meaning "to fold", and Kami meaning "paper")
is the art of paper folding, which is often associated with Japanese culture. In modern usage, the word "origami" is used as an inclusive term for all folding practices, regardless of their culture of origin.

There is nothing quite like the joy you get from transforming a plain square piece of paper into a container, animal, flower, etc.

It still puts a smile on your faces when you complete an origami. :)

I'm totally new to Japanese and I was very nervous. I just completed my 4th lesson and I'm finding learning Japanese is fun! Toshi is very patient and he is helping me create a plan forward. I have been working hard and have kind of gotten Hiragana,Katakana, but I need a lot more practice. I am able to read and write some words and in our lesson today I spoke my first complete Japanese sentence. Thank you Toshi for your help and for making my Japanese journey fun!

Toshi was prepared and taught me common politeness
phrases for my trip to Japan for my first lesson. He was patient and was a great teacher.

"Victoria was very knowledgable and friendly. She guided my daughter and I through the process of understanding the basics of starting a sewing project. We learned how to use a pattern to make a pair of pants and as a result discovered what works and what doesn't.

We were excited to have someone who understood our needs and was able to answer all of our questions."
