About Tracy
I have been teaching individual and group lessons for 12+ years. Many of my students have won trophies at the Granquist music competition and also play in local youth orchestras. My own youth string ensemble plays publicly at many popular local venues several times a year. I enjoy exposing my students to the finer points of being a professional musician such as the camaraderie, team work, creativity (creating harmonies, tailoring arrangements to fit student’s level) and of course, stage presence. I am very proud of my students. It is so gratifying to see their confidence build with each new skill they master.

*** Lesson Details ***
My approach to teaching is to combine fundamentals with “adventure.” I encourage students to experiment with their instrument and have quite a few budding composers. No two students learn in the same way, so
I don’t use the same strategy for each individual. I believe music should be fun and rewarding. I like to expose students to many different types of music, i.e.; jazz, pop, blues, folk and of course, classical. Students are more likely to practice music that speaks to their personality.

My teaching environment is very laid back. I expect my students to practice, but I don’t read them the riot act if they show up to a lesson not having practiced much the week before. I encourage them to practice more the next week and I give them strategies for how to fit practice time into their schedule along with the most efficient way to practice their pieces.

I encourage parents to sit in on their child’s lesson, but I don’t require it. The more a parent is informed about their child’s goals, the better they are able to assist, support and facilitate the student’s practice. Involved parents contribute greatly to a child’s success.

I love teaching adults too! It is never too late to learn an instrument and the rewards carry over into all aspects of life. As with children, music makes us all smarter. Research proves this. We learn complicated spacial and math skills without even realizing it; we’re having too much fun!

I have annual recitals for private students. I speak Spanish.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Basement studio finished and separate from house

*** Travel Equipment ***
Sometimes music. I can refer students to instrument rental or purchase places, but do not have instruments to provide. I can obtain music for the students if they prefer, otherwise I will tell them what and where to buy.

*** Specialties ***
I use Suzuki and other books for material, but my teaching is more traditional. I use actual bowhold from start. My own invention - pinky AND thumb houses. Music reading is introduced fairly early. A little at a time and it's painless.

I’m an adult with a fair amount of previous musical experience but absolutely none with a stringed instrument. Tracy’s approach for that kind of beginner is ideal. She is firm about establishing sound fundamental technique from day 1 and building on it with practice pieces that provide just the right amount of challenge. She is encouraging and phenomenally patient. If technique problems or incipient bad habits arise as more complicated material is taken on, she is all over them and always has corrective measures to pull out of her (extensive) bag of teaching tricks. I would recommend her to anyone interested in learning a new instrument.

It was a pleasure to meet such a dedicated and outgoing teacher. Teresa was warm, friendly and undertstanding. Her initial request for us to try and only communicate in spanish, finding my spanish definitely limited, she assured that I should at least try and get across as well as I can words that dont come to me easily. she will always help me through it. This calmed my recall anxiety and made me feel more confident that in addition to her patience she is the teacher to assist me in achieving one of my goals in 2018 to reclaim my idioma, eventually become fluent, and go on to either help other persons trying to achieve the same goal or by working parttime in a position where I can provide good communication in customer service.

I've taken classes with Adan for over two years now--since the beginner level--and I couldn't be more pleased.

Adan is an excellent and conscientious teacher who genuinely cares about working with students to find the best approach for making progress. He has a gift for explaining things clearly, both the grammar and the idiomatic details that are important for developing conversation and getting a real feel for the language. The material is very well chosen, fun and productive; class is something I look forward to every week.

Learning a new language is a challenge and working with a good teacher makes a huge difference. Adan is a great choice!

I have been working with Adan for over 2 years and he is an amazing teacher!! He has taught me Spanish at beginning, intermediate, and advanced levels. He has helped me to learn the vocabulary, grammar and content that I need for my job. Adan draws upon a variety of engaging resources (e.g., Ted Talks, television shows, news articles) to expand my knowledge of Spanish and the culture of Spanish-speaking countries. Adan's classes are interesting and challenging and he makes me feel successful and motivated to learn more. I highly recommend him!

Adan has been my teacher for the past year, and I only have great things to say. He is warm, patient, curious, present, and clearly loves to teach. Adan has a thorough understanding of English, so he is well aware of the difficulties English speakers face when learning Spanish. I find the one-to-one, structured, progressive grammar lessons work so well for me. As a beginner who doesn't speak any other languages, making the decision to learn Spanish was very intimidating for me, but now I look forward to my lessons...always!

About Niki
Your learning experience is about you. It is about personalized lesson plans, your learning style and aspirations. I look forward to working with you.

A little bit about me: I have sung and played the piano with many different professional bands (from rock and pop, to blues and ethnic). In addition, being a classical piano teacher for over a decade in preparatory schools (from pre-school to high-school), running my private piano/theory studio and currently teaching music majors in college (Northwestern University, New England Conservatory previously), I can confidently say that I have dealt with a large span of ages (3 – 45), personalities, cultural backgrounds and levels of students, especially aged 10 – 18.

My teaching style is enthusiastic, humorous and theatrical, always focused on each student’s interests and approachi
ng learning in an interdisciplinary way, incorporating singing, composing, movement and anything the student relates to. I believe in interactive learning and in giving the students the power to create their own curriculum. I will give you a solid technical jumpstart, you will learn to read and write music and we will have cross-genre playlists because we love all music.

As for my education and current professional life, I'm a classical composer, with a bachelor's degree in classical piano and theory, currently pursuing my doctoral degree in composition at Northwestern University. I previously obtained my master's degree in composition at the New England Conservatory in Boston. I also hold a bachelor's degree in pedagogy, musicology.

My teenage daughter was a student of Niki's until we moved. She builds rapport with the student, and her devotion to music and the pursuit of her own education as a gifted musician made her enthusiasm infectious. She is the product of serious and intense training from a young age, but I believe her personality and approach would allow for a solid connection with students of various abilities.

ABOUT MY PRIVATE LESSONS

I can help you improve your current level of Spanish, help your children with Spanish at school, or teach you Spanish from scratch!

⋆ LOCATIONS
I live in Bloomingdale and work in the DuPage county area. I meet most of my students in local coffee shops like Starbucks or Panera, but at-home lessons are possible as well.

⋆ LESSON FREQUENCY AND LENGTH

It would depend on your goals. School tutoring usually requires less time because Spanish at school is extremely basic and it’s doesn’t really lead to fluency in the language. Anything else needs a greater degree of commitment! I meet my students for one hour once or twice per week AT LEAST.

⋆ TEACHING METHOD
For school tutoring I try to adapt to your school’s method. For other types of lessons, I prefer avoiding translation and memorization and make use of effective Spanish textbooks, technology, games and free conversation.

⋆ SCHEDULE / AVAILABILITY
I mostly teach Monday-Friday afternoons and weekends in the morning.

⋆ RESCHEDULING / CANCELLATIONS / PUNCTUALITY
I understand flexibility is convenient and appreciated, so I allow rescheduling and cancellations in case of emergency or with enough advance notice. I recommend students to stick to their agreed schedule if they want to achieve their goals, even if that means to meet at another time during that same week. If I am already on my way to your lesson and you need to cancel, I will charge for the lesson. If you’re going to be late, please let me know, and I can’t guarantee that I can stay later than our scheduled time.

⋆ FIRST LESSON
During our first lesson we will take time to go over any important information, set our goals and answer questions regarding nature of our lessons. We can talk about fees and teaching materials during this lesson as well.

For any more details or any questions, please don’t hesitate contacting me!
