David R.

Cary, NC

About David

David discovered his love for music early on at the age of seven with the musical/movie: The Sound of Music. He and his siblings would entertain their babysitter by acting out the entire musical - singing and dancing along with the soundtrack. To make it even more fun, they would sometimes speed up the vinyl record and perform in extra-fast mode! (And that was way before 'Wii - Just Dance!')

He vividly remembers his first real musical instruction back in elementary school:
“Everyone in 4th Grade was given a Recorder to learn how to play 'Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star'. When the
music teacher had the class play together, she noticed that I wasn't looking down at my music booklet as I played, since I was 'playing by ear'. Not only was my booklet turned to the wrong page; it was upside down as well! To admonish me, she had me stand up in front of the whole class and play solo - as she held the booklet in front of me. Enthusiastically, I rendered the complete song correctly, only pretending to read from the page as she held it, but actually 'playing by ear'. Upon getting to the end of the tune, I suddenly broke out in a jazzed-up, improvised version of 'Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star', arousing the whole class to spontaneously tap their feet in rhythm and clap with delight . . . my first solo performance!”

David eventually took up guitar in his teens, becoming involved with playing for musicals such as "Godspell" and "Jesus Christ Superstar". During high school, he also played in the Bluegrass band 'Odell & Zeke', and in the Rock band 'Ring Wraith', performing for local dances and proms.

Extremely versatile within classical and popular guitar styles, David played in the Top-40-Hit music video, Shine Shine, by The Bee Gees' Barry Gibb – alongside pop-star legend - Michael Jackson. David is also mentioned in Just Jazz Guitar Magazine for his jazz endeavors; and he has years of experience as a church music director.

As a Classical concert guitarist, David has performed throughout the USA and Europe. His live performances have been broadcast on television and radio: NPR’s Performance Today (USA); CBC’s Arts National (Canada); RAI Television’s In Concerto (Italy), and the Hungarian National Television. Successful in competitions, David won First Prize in the 20th International Guitar Competition in Milan, Italy and First Prize in the National Wurlitzer Artist Competition, USA. He has received other awards and grants as well, including a Solo Recitalist Grant from the National Endowment for the Arts, and the Governor's Award from Department of State, Florida. Moreover, he was chosen for the rosters of both the California State Touring Program and the North Carolina Visiting Artists Program.

David’s 35 years of teaching and performing experience, coupled with intensive years of formal studies with many of the world's greatest guitarists, including Andres Segovia, Eliot Fisk, David Russell, Christopher Parkening, Holzman, Ghiglia, Morgen, Tomas, Isbin - have afforded him a rich and in-depth understanding of music and the guitar. He shares all of this with his students in an insightful and uniquely original manner.

David is absolutely fabulous. He is flexible, caring and willing to work at my daughter's pace. Even when she gets frustrated, he stays totally calm and handles it with ease. He keeps things light and fun, but somehow manages to keep her on task at the same time. Best of all, my eight year old daughter is truly loving playing the guitar! I cannot recommend him highly enough.

I started lessons with David a couple of months ago unsure about whether I'd stick with guitar lessons at all. I mean, the web is full of tutorials for playing. But I figured I'd give lessons a try.

I have been extremely pleased with my lessons and my progress thus far. Our lessons are a nice mix of learning songs and techniques and always emphasizing what I want to be learning. Considering I'm 39 and years out of school, this is important for me.

David has also been a remarkable teacher for my 8 year old son. Both my wife and I are very happy with the instruction we have received. Yes, David is slightly more expensive than some others here, but you get what you pay for! I wouldn't hesitate to recommend him for anyone looking for lessons.

Brandon B.

Durham, NC

About Brandon

I have 20 years playing and teaching experience. I have played in several ensembles ranging from Jazz to Metal. My focus in teaching is to bring out not just the drummer, but the complete musician residing within my students. My lessons go beyond technique and repetition, and really focus on developing a complete musical sense on the drum set. Along with drum set I also teach general percussion (snare and glockenspiel) and music theory.

I have spent most of my playing and teaching career trying to learn as many percussive styles as possible. I have found that with each new rhythmic discove
ry my personal drumming style ebbs and flows, and through these experiences, my style has been refined. This excitement for drumming and rhythm is what I hope to inspire in my students; so lets start building the foundations of musical excellence!

*** Lesson Details ***
Each lesson is customized to the wants and needs of the individual student. There is a basic level of drumming competency that all students will be required to reach before moving on to a more customized lesson plan; however, even beginner students lessons will be taught to their learning abilities. The ultimate goal is to teach what the student wants to learn, along with imparting the drumming and musical skills to accomplish any and all goals.

Materials: I use the Breeze Easy method books to introduce note reading and basic music theory. I also use The Art of Bop Drumming and Afro-Cuban Rhythms for Drum Set for intermediate drum set students.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Drum set
Metronome
Music stand
Practice pad
Hand percussion

*** Travel Equipment ***
While I will bring basic equipment (i.e. practice pad, stick bag, metronome) to lessons, students will be required to obtain basic equipment to use for practice. A practice folder will be used to keep track of handouts, worksheets, and practice charts used throughout the lessons. The folder and handouts will be provided by me at no additional charge to the student.

*** Specialties ***
My specialty is jazz drumming. However, I teach most styles, incorporating the more melodic approach of jazz drumming to help the student understand what is happening musically. This way the student has a melodic reference to the rhythm they choose to play behind any given melody.

Brandon has exactly what I was looking for in a drum set teacher. He tailors our lessons to my specific interests and needs but doesn't allow me to neglect my weaknesses, is extremely flexible in his scheduling from week-to-week, makes me want to practice all day after each weekly lesson, and is extremely knowledgeable. The way he teaches makes me think of the drum set as a musical instrument like any other, and he makes me want to learn more about it every week. I couldn't ask for a more qualified, intelligent, or inspiring teacher. 5 stars out of 5.

Cyril was timely and communicative prior to her arrival.
Cyril provided a refreshingly open, simple presentation to the vast material of learning not just the piano, but reading music as well.
I am new to the piano but committed to learning. She recognized and met my level of knowledge and led us logically through steps that allow me a sense of order to this process. She gave me considerable homework that is within my ability to work in preparation for our next meeting. While she found me eager, she gave me just the right quantity to not be overwhelming.
I am more than delighted.

That was an amazing class, she was explaining me how to play correctly and respecting the style. All my sounds were not the best but, she was trying to find the perfection throught the exquisite explanation with her words.
As a pianist is musically awesome!!
I do recommend her for beginners, intermediate levels, and adults with different interests in classical and popular music.

Samantha G.

Cleveland, OH

About Samantha

Hi! My name is Samantha, and I'm currently a junior at Case Western Reserve University, where I'm majoring in flute performance as well as international studies. I've been studying music, specifically flute, for 12 years and counting, and I dabble in piccolo, alto saxophone, clarinet, voice, piano, and pennywhistle. If I can play it, I enjoy it, and if I can’t play it yet I usually enjoy it even more!

I've participated in and helped run a myriad of ensembles, from simple classical quintets to 70-piece marching bands--so whatever type of music my students want to learn, I'm ready to coach th
em through. I take a holistic approach in my lessons, tailoring them to each student, and incorporating elements of theory, history, and healthy practicing techniques as we go. Whether you are getting ready to audition for an advanced group, or are just starting out, I'm ready to listen and help you reach your goals!

Having explored, studied, and performed a variety of musical genres (Baroque, Classical, jazz, Broadway, modern, etc), I own a large library of repertoire and have something to fit most any student's interests. I'm passionate about bringing the joy of music to my community, and as a classically-trained flutist, I also have a solid grounding in theory and pedagogy--not to mention experience with how auditions and concerts are run. I hope to teach my students a little of all these things, but also about the parts of music that aren't technical: commitment, story-telling, and artistry.
