About Kim
For creative people and makers, crafting is like going to the gym. You will find great fulfillment and a sense of accomplishment if you set aside time on a regular basis to nurture this very important part of what makes you who you are. Think of me like a personal trainer. I will encourage and inspire you while you develop your skills and express yourself through a variety of textile based media.

Private and group lessons or classes are provided in locations around the NYC area, in my space or via webcam. My focus is on providing an entertaining, relaxing and enjoyable experience as you learn a leisure time activity. I am extremely patient and detail oriented. When you let me know what you would like to learn or make, I will guide you through everything from selecting materials to fine tuning your technique. Take a lesson with me to fi
nd out why my students love me.

Teaching is a wonderful extension of my work as a professional crochet and knit designer and technical editor. A web search will reveal some of my published work over the last decade. As a craft teacher in the NYC area for over 8 years, I have worked with individuals, groups and classes of all ages and skill levels. Most of my experience focuses on working with older adults and people with special needs. Minors must have a supervising adult present. I do not work with groups of young children.

I have studied the history and mastered the skills to make and teach a vast variety of textile techniques. Please see my experience.

If you are using this site without the assistance of a TL Rep, I recommend the schedule as you go option. I often have openings in my calendar sooner than the site allows. After we make contact, we can choose the best date and time.

*** Lesson Details ***
Please let me know what you would like to learn or make before your lesson so that we may be fully prepared with any materials, tools, equipment, books or handouts. Students are expected to provide all their own tools and materials unless other arrangements are made.

Recommended duration for in-person lessons is 90 minutes. A surcharge may be added for travel outside of areas accessible by one MTA fare or expected travel time exceeding 90 minutes.

*** Specialties ***
Textile based crafts including crochet, knitting, embroidery, sewing, patchwork, plastic canvas, needlepoint, counted cross stitch, bobbin lace, historic textile and costume conservation and storage, and more.

I also love to research and develop craft projects for classes or master techniques students would like to learn.

Very attentive instructor. Good explanation. I was surprised how good she was at picking up my form even over the webcam and correcting it when needed. Very production lesson. Will be booking another session soon.

I have no hand eye coordination and really thought I might be a hopeless case, but Kim was incredibly patient. She knew how to get me to understand what she was doing (and what I needed to do) using various teaching techniques. And low and behold - I was kitting (albeit - not very well - hahaha). For a first lesson, I was very pleased.

Anne-Louise has a very intuitive approach to teaching which matched my kinesthetic learning style. She helped me learn how to use my machine and I will work on a project so she can help answer any questions at the next lesson. We were definitely a fit. Thanks.

I am an intuitive, Jungian-based astrologer. A life-long yoga practitioner, I presently run a yoga nonprofit. Daily meditation is essential to me. I had my astrology chart done on a whim in the early 90's and immediately became enthralled with the art.

I began my daily blog, featuring Street Art from around the World, in April of 2013. I published two of my novels, written in the late 90's, this year as well. With an MA in counseling Psychology, and a PhD in Philosophy and Religion, I bring a psychological and philosophical perspective to my work. My PhD, from the California Institute of Integral Studies in San Francisco, concentrated on symbol systems and Jungian Psychology. With over twenty five years experience in astrological counseling, I impart a unique, artistic vision, to my workshops and readings.

Ainslie is equally patient and dynamic in her teaching style. Moreover, the breathe of her astrology knowledge is unparalleled, and she effortlessly imparts a thorough knowledge of the subject in terms that are clear and concise. After my own lessons, I would enthusiastically recommend Ainslie to any student interested in gaining a comprehensive understanding of astrology.

Ainslie has given me two astrology readings.. both of which have given me a deeper understanding of astrology and myself. She is meticulous with her work and very patient while explaining all the information she gives, you can clearly see this in her weekly blogs. What I loved most about Ainslie readings is that you really feel how passionate she is about Astrology and this makes the experience so much more meaningful and fun! Thank you Ainslie!

Kids love to learn to sew with Mrs. Appel, with fun, confidence-building projects!

Sewing--its art and technology--thrill me! Let me help your child discover a love of hand- and machine-sewing! In the process, your child will:

--learn a new skill
--improve hand-eye coordination
--exercise creative problem-solving
--make design decisions
--reinforce math skills
--learn interesting facts about textile history, science and engineering

Lessons are tailored for your child's skills and interests. We begin with hand-sewing, then progress to the sewing machine when your child is ready. I teach fun projects that are designed to keep your child's attention, and are usually completed during that session. You don't need to provide any materials, tools or equipment to begin, until your child is ready to tackle a larger project.

About
Mrs. Appel (yep, it's pronounced just like the fruit!): I've been teaching sewing to kids since 2011. I have also taught drawing, animation and science in elementary after-school programs and drawing/painting and maker skills at a hybrid middle-/high school. If something can be made, I can make it understandable and fun to learn!

I've really appreciated Sonya's hands-on teaching approach and guidance as I learn this new skill. She's equal parts teacher and coach, creating a comfortable environment to explore and learn. I leave energized after our sessions and look forward to the next one. She's also been very flexible with my schedule, removing the stress of juggling a hectic calendar. She's truly a world-class instructor.

I'm a career string quartet musician who loves both performing and teaching. I graduated with a Master of Music degree from McGill University in Viola Performance.

I've been lucky to have many amazing opportunities so far: I've performed in Carnegie Hall as a member of the New York String Orchestra Seminar; in Yokohama and Tokyo, Japan; and in Salzburg, Austria (the birthplace of Mozart!) as a member of the Milton String Quartet. I've also toured the USA and played in many parts of Canada. My favorite experience was winning the Fischoff Chamber Music Competition, the largest competition of its kind in North America!

My teaching experience is quite varied. I currently teach group classes to 3rd-5th graders here in NYC public schools. I've taught chamber music to teenagers in Indiana University's Summer String Academy and to adult lea
rners in Montreal.

To me, music is about community, and getting to play great music with close friends or family is one of the most rewarding experiences.

I also tutor chess: I grew up playing the game and my parents ran a chess club at my elementary school in rural Maine. Chess was pure fun growing up but now I see how valuable of a tool it is for teaching logic, strategy and critical thinking! I won the U.S. Open unrated division at the age of 16 with a USCF rating of 1600 and have competed in a number of other tournaments.
