About Kathleen
I am a classically-trained opera singer. I have a Bachelors and Masters in Vocal Performance and Vocal Pedagogy (teaching), and have sung professionally in the U.S. and Europe. I have sung Opera, Operetta, Musical Theater and Concerts, as well as choral and cantorial singing. I have been a finalist and winner of vocal competitions in both the United States and Europe.
I have been teaching voice since 1980, and have worked with students of all ages, from 14 to 75. I have also directed and designed for musical theater and opera. Because I love singing, I want to bring that to my students as well, whatever kind of music they want to sing. I love children, but I do not work with girls or boys younger than 14.

In addition to music, I also teach English (ESL), Accent Reduction, German, U.S. & World History. I have my CBEST C
redential And ESL Certification. I do private tutoring and teach classes.

*** Lesson Details ***
I believe that learning how to breath is the key to good singing. After 3 months of study, my students will have learned how to breathe, which improves both their singing and speaking voices. Good breathing is the key to good singing and a healthy voice. With a healthy, well-trained voice, my students can be valuable members of any vocal ensemble, and enjoy their singing, For solo singing, good breathing is most important, whether singing opera, musical theater or pop music, because it gives a beautiful, full quality to the voice.
I always begin a lesson with warm-up exercises, to check breathing and vocal placement. Once the (vocal) engine is warmed-up, then we begin to sing. I try to get to know my students, so that, together, we can choose music that will enable them to reach their goals and is both fun and challenging for them to sing.

In addition to music, I also teach English (ESL), Accent Reduction, German, U.S. & World History. I have my CBEST Credential And ESL Certification. I do private tutoring and teach classes.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Separate studio with Piano
I have a MacBook Pro laptop computer + stereo speakers, to provide recorded accompaniment, when necessary.

*** Travel Equipment ***
If a student wishes to have on-site lessons, I require that a piano or keyboard be available for the lessons.
I usually travel with my MacBook Pro laptop computer & stereo speakers, to provide recorded accompaniment, when necessary.

*** Specialties ***
I am a trained opera/oratorio singer, but I teach Broadway, Pop, choral and classical singers.

I have had many international students who didn't speak English well. Music is an international language that helps me communicate with all of my students!

My daughter is really enjoying her voice lessons. Kathleen is a talented, caring teacher and knows how to make the process effective and fun for my daughter. My daughter loves being able to choose the songs she wants to learn, and this collaborative process keeps her quite interested and inspired.

Excellent Voice Teacher

Mrs. B is a wonderful and dedicated teacher who focuses diligently during class sessions. She thoroughly explains terms and technique and is friendly and sociable. Her extensive knowledge of languages comes extremely useful in Italian arias and other folk songs as to explain the meanings of words and to convey motion. Her classes are enjoyable and fun, while still being comprehensively academic.

Mr Henry helped in improving my son's writing skills. He is a wonderful teacher. My son was struggling with writing. He used to be shy of writing and now he seems to be more confident in writing. Mr. Henry not only taught him different types of writing but also improved his vocabulary skills. I highly recommend him for learning/improving writing skills.

About Kana
Hi! Thank you for visiting my profile.
I am originally from Japan, and moved here five years ago.
My father is American and I have been learning English for more than 10 years, so I can speak both English and Japanese.
I graduated from UcC Berkeley majored in Linguistics, minored in Education, and currently, I am doing my master's in Speech Pathology.
I have been teaching Japanese for 3 years now, and I also have tutored at my previous colleges for 3 years.

Japanese: I'm teaching beginner, intermediate, and advanced conversation. Not only what is written in text books but words that we actually use in Japan and real Japanese conversation day to day.
I can also teach to pass JPLT, basic business Japanese including some formats of writing a letter and documents.

ESL: mostly, I teach writing but I do reading, listening an
d speaking too. I've been hearing English since I was born so can pronounce words correctly but I know the pain of learning another language and how people usually struggle.

Message me if you want to learn from expert of learning other languages! I know four different languages:)

I studied Japanese with Kana for almost a year and a half. In that time, she took me from knowing absolutely nothing to being a proficient beginner level speaker. I can now read Hiragana/Katakana every day, have a solid grasp of the different counters and number system, as well as conjugation of u/ru verbs and adjectives and various sentence forms.

Kana was always very patient and never made me feel awkward or uncomfortable. She was willing to go as fast or as slow as I liked and always had the answers to my questions. She was always fun to work with and has become like a friend to me over the time I've studied with her. Highly recommend!

Marie is an excellent teacher! I’m a student from China and currently studying MFA acting for film in New York. I’ve lived in America for more than 4 years. My English has gotten better after finishing college here in 2017. However, since I’m an actor now, sometimes I’m required to play roles without my thick Chinese accent in the way. With Marie’s help, my pronunciation has improved a lot in the past a few weeks. My American classmates say that my articulation is getting much better now. And I’m still just working on it!

About Lilia
I am a San Francisco-based Russian language and diction tutor with more than 8 years of experience. I have a background in linguistics and speak four languages, I know very well how the language learning process works and I can share all my tips and techniques with you. At my classes, I mix and match modern teaching methods and always try to share vibrant, real-life aspects of the language with my students throughout the learning process. We use a lot of authentic materials that are sufficiently challenging but immersive, relevant and interesting. I work with students of all ages. I even have experience in teaching classes for 2-5-year-old kids.

I love digging into the origins of the Russian language, the grammar, the punctuation and other technical aspects that can be fascinating for language-lovers. I help develop good practice habit
s that enable you to maximize your learning experience and achieve your goals faster.

In addition to the language skills, my students can expect to acquire cultural knowledge. I have worked as theatre interpreter and I would love to share my knowledge of Russian theatre, music and drama.

I have certificates of Teaching Russian as a Foreign Language from the two most acclaimed linguistic universities in Russia: Moscow State University and Moscow State Linguistic University. I also have a BA cum laude in Linguistics and Translation; I am a professional interpreter and translator to/from English and Spanish.

For the past 6 years, apart from teaching the Russian language, I have worked as a theatre interpreter in Moscow and supported international productions as a Russian diction coach and interpreter in the UK, Spain and Hong Kong.

About Gwendolyn
I'm an opera singer with seven years of stage experience in Germany and the US, including top houses like the Deutsche Oper Berlin, the Komische Oper Berlin, Konzerthaus Berlin, and, since moving to the Bay Area, I have worked with Opera San Jose and Lamplighter's Theater. I have a MA in singing from the University of the Arts (UdK) in Berlin, and I have taught others to sing since 2014.

I am also a 200 Hour Certified Yogalign teacher. Yogalign teaches the body how to come into natural, functional, comfortable alignment and strengthens it to stay there. I use it while teaching voice, but I also love to teach it on its own.

In voice lessons, I constantly incorporate alignment practices because we use our whole bodies to produce sound. A free breath, which means good alignment, is the foundation of good voice technique.

I believe
that singing is a movement practice like any other. When we move our legs and feet properly, we move through the water, and we call that swimming. When we use our breath and our resonance properly while our vocal chords vibrate, we call that singing. It is all a matter of coordination, one we either naturally understood in childhood, or one we must be taught. It is my joy to guide people to this knowledge of their voices.

With public speakers, my goal is to help people feel at home in their bodies and command the room with their voices while giving presentations. I have given seminars teaching scientific researchers in Berlin and Potsdam, helping them to present results in ways that are both informative and inspiring.

I am fluent in German, having spent two intensive summers at the prestigious Middlebury College Language School, getting top training in the ins and outs of German grammar. That preparation, the tricks and tools I learned there, paved the way for the fluency I acquired while living in Germany for ten years. I am happy to help beginners learn the tools I learned to help get them on their way auf Deutsch.

Students in each area can expect to progress steadily week to week, provided they do the assigned exercises in between. The voice, the body, and language skills are all muscles we must train daily to expect any progress.

I look forward to working with creative students who have a passion for self-discovery and honest self-expression. Let's have fun!
