My BA had an emphasis in "classical" music theory but I'm also well versed in jazz theory and pop and rock. My understanding of music plays a role in everything I play and write. I love it and love teaching it.

About James

I've played keyboards and sang professionally for the last 25 years. During that time my home has been in the San Francisco Bay Area but I have performed all over the country and have toured several times in Germany, Switzerland, and Japan. I’m a two time winner of the West Coast Songwriters “Song

I came away from my lesson with James feeling so happy and knowing that he will be teaching and encouraging me all the way going forward. I am actually lost for words to express what an incredibly positive experience I had today. I am also looking forward to my grand daughter taking lessons from James now too. I feel I got lucky that James is the teacher that was found for me.

My goal is to create a positive learning environment that addresses a student's specific needs. I focus heavily on increasing a student's critical thinking skills so that they can easily problem solve during their practice sessions, increasing their ability to grow as a musician.

I have five years of teaching experience, with age groups pre-k to high school. Last year, I received my masters degree in violin performance at the University of North Carolina School of the Arts. Thanks for your consideration and I'm looking forward to working with you!

About Amanda

After 18 years of studying the violin and five years of experience teaching violin, I’ve realized how important it is to create a learning environment where the student knows they can achieve. I accomplish this through a combination of directing a student’s attention to things they should listen fo

I worked with Amanda for almost a year until I had to relocate outside the area and she has been very professional and has always been flexible with schedules. As an adult learner who took basic lessons in the past, she was very patient and helpful throughout the entire learning process from holding the bow to tuning the violin. Highly recommend and would definitely continue taking classes!

Hello, I am Evan W.! Growing up in a musical family, music surrounded me. I remember going around trying to figure out what ever I could get my hands on. As someone who grew up surrounded by music, having a chance to take music there was like taking a factory tour of a product that you liked. I finally got to figure out why I liked what I liked, and how to make new combinations of these elements to create music of my own (composition). This is probably why I am passionate about Music Theory. I hope you will learn to enjoy theory as much as I do. I have scored very high score in Music Theory and have passed the College Board Music Theory Examination with one of the highest scores ( 5|4). I am looking forward to having a lesson with you!

"Best voice teacher I've ever had!

I took one semester of voice lessons from prof. James. She was the best voice teacher I've ever had. She is very reliable, punctual and precise. With her, I finally understood where my biggest problems with singing were. Her explanations were clear and very helpful. We worked all together as a class on the basics and then we dedicated a big part of the semester just doing individual lessons. One thing that I really appreciated was that she convinced me to get slightly out of my comfort zone and had me singing a song that I never thought I would have been able to sing. And it was a great success. Not to mention that I attended an opera where she was one of the main opera singers, and she was incredible! Her diction was also impeccable, and I can say that because I'm Italian. If you're thinking of taking voice lessons from a professional who really knows what she's doing, Prof. James is the teacher for you."
