About Melissa
I have been teaching since 2006 on a variety of topics. I graduated with an BA from the University of Wisconsin. My degree is in History with and emphasis on East Asian history.
I've taught all age groups from age 2 up to retirees. My teaching experience includes one-on-one and group classes in a variety of settings. I've taught corporate classes, private lessons, small groups, and traditional classroom lessons.
We have a student-centric philosophy of learning. Lessons are generally relaxed and designed to work towards accomplishing student determined goals. While all students will study similar fundamentals regarding technique, theory, and performance, every lesson is as different as every person. Special focus on topics like music theory, self-accompaniment, composition, song writing, and home recording are available as well.
What are your personal goals? We'll tell you what you need to do to get there, and help you take the steps to achieve your aspirations.
Lessons with small children are more focused on just having fun while developing a good musical foundation, but we prefer for them to have as much personal ownership of their lesson as possible.

I’ve wanted to learn lace knitting for so long but it overwhelmed me every time I tried. Simply stated: I’m no longer overwhelmed or fearful of lace knitting!
Patty is patient, detailed and takes the time to make sure the steps make sense instead of just a monkey see monkey do what I do approach. This gives me an actual understanding of what I’m doing and WHY and removed so much of what confused me before.
Patty has a depth of technical knowledge that is fierce. Combine that with her ability to break it down and truly TEACH me what to do and that’s a recipe for pure awesomeness.
I’ve already booked 2 more lessons because um hello.... I need to learn ALL THE THINGS

ression. I love helping my students learn and grow as artists.
I’m passionate about art history and color theory. In our lessons, not only will you learn how to draw and paint, you will also learn the cultural history around the subject. I will show you historical and contemporary examples of artwork that fit thematically with our lessons. We will have engaging conversations about art while we draw and paint. I can also point you towards art openings happening around the Bay Area.
My personal teaching style is patient, constructive, and encouraging. With practice and hard work, I can help you achieve your goals.
Other things I love include: Spending time in the Great Outdoors, listening to Billie Holiday, and cooking elaborate meals!
