Will M. Kearny, NJ

About Will

At the age of 12, I picked up the bass guitar to start a rock band with my neighborhood friends. After years of private lessons, I got my Associate's degree in music and shipped up to Boston to earn my BA at the prestigious Berklee College of Music. During my time in college I joined a number of bands, had my music played on the radio for the first time, and even founded my own mobile recording company. I found that my best teachers were the ones who were willing to learn themselves, so I decided that my own quest for education would never be finished. *** Lesson Details *** I want to get you playing music immediately! Beginning students are much more likely to stick with an instrument if they see immediate results, so I don't waste time in the first lesson forcing you to learn lots ...

Bass Guitar
From Learning To Doing

When I started taking lessons I was very much a beginner. Will helped me out. We started at the bottom working some scales and learning the fundamentals. Once I figured out some of the basics we got to do what I wanted to do, play!!! After just a few months I became comfortable playing in public and now I gig all the time. All of this thanks to Will. Thanks Will!

The boost I needed to get playing again

Will's lessons didn't only help improve my bass playing, but also gave me the confidence I needed before recording in the studio. He was patient and didn't mind working with me until I had my skills down. His lessons are more practical than others I have had with a more "classical" feel. I would recommend Will's lessons to anyone who is looking to improve their bass playing or have some fun rocking out to great tunes.
Erica S. Bloomfield, NJ

About Erica

Hi! My name is Erica, and I am a private lesson teacher, composer, arranger, and pianist currently living, writing, performing, and teaching in North Jersey. I believe that by having such a versatile musical background, I will be able to understand different needs and interests you may have and help you begin or continue your musical journey and reach your goals. I currently teach 30 private piano and composition students in North New Jersey, and I am consistently inspired by all the progress all my students have made! My students have played classical pieces in recitals, played in jazz combos with other student musicians, written music that was performed by professional ensembles, learned how to play ragtime, and more. No two students have gone down the same path, because the ...

She gets it!

Quick background: I was classically trained for about 7 years in piano, starting when I was around 9. My teacher was great, and did an awesome job of driving the fundamentals.

Fast forward to more recently: Having not taken lessons for 15+ years (I had continued playing and learning...just without a teacher), I decided I wanted to pursue a bit more jazz and theory. I went back to my childhood teacher, who very honestly told me that jazz was not his forte. I took a few months of lessons with him, which helped to get me back into the swing of things, but I was really interested in jazz.

I found Erica on takelessons, and she was truly amazing! If you're looking for a teacher who is always "by the book", this isn't her. While I'm sure she can do that, she thrives in allowing you to be a musician. Her understanding of complex time signatures is great, and she really helps to chunk things up into manageable pieces.

Some of her greatest strengths, from the student's perspective, are her patience, friendly demeanor, STRONG understanding of music theory (she's a composer at heart, and I've no doubt that she's great at it), broad knowledge of music, from composers to artists, and her ability to help you learn to improvise. If I wanted to play different notes than what was on the page, within reason of course, that was ok. Having come from a classical background, that was quite refreshing.

I was always able to look forward to learning something new at my lessons; even her book recommendations have been excellent.

I'd say, because of her patience, she's a perfect teacher for adults and children alike. You really can't go wrong with Erica!

Incredibly amiable, professional, and talented as a teacher.

As a senior in high school now graduating and transferring into college, I started my lessons with Dimitry in December last year and had to end this summer at the end of the music school's program. Even though my time learning the saxophone was short, Dimitry used my past musical experience to help guide me through the instrument. His lessons did not feel long in any sense of the word, and in fact some two-hour lessons I took to make up missed weeks blew by, as I was constantly engaged by his teachings. During my studies with him I found myself in the presence of a true musician, and this was only further driven home when I saw him play in the Hanover Wind Symphony at the Morristown Community Theater with Stanley Drucker. I would highly recommend Dimitry as an instructor for a student at any level.

After many years as a music educator, clarinetist, saxophonist playing with Army and concert bands, as well as dance bands, I have had the pleasure of meeting and working with Dimitri. Being retired , I made the decision to seriously play clarinet again. His skills, as a musician and teacher have helped me regain my passion for the instrument and ability to play at a high level. I would recommend him most highly.

My Highest Recommendation

As co-prinicpal trumpet and Associate Music Director of the Hanover Wind Symhony it's my pleasure to have worked with Dimitry for over 15 years. Dimitry is an exceptionally gifted and highly respected clarinetist who brings years of global performance experience to his teaching. Polite, patient and well spoken it is a pleasure to listen to him speak about music, no matter what the subject or genre. His passion for his craft is evident from the very first time you meet him. I highly recommend Dimity as a performer and educator!
Mr. Tony Lodi, NJ

About Tony

Passionate about sharing my love of the guitar with students of all ages, I've been teaching for more than 30 years. A trained Flamenco guitarist, I found, at the tender age of 7, my passion when I heard the world-renowned Flamenco guitarist Sabicas. Studying Flamenco since then, I began, during my teens, performing professionally and have had the honor of performing with such nationally known musicians as Billy Bang (legendary fiddle player), Willy Calhoun (Living Colour), Vassar Clements Band, Tom Chapin, Stanley Jordan, Buddy Miles, and Michael Powers. In high school, I enrolled in an Honors Musicianship class at the RiverDell, NJ, Senior High where I learned to read scores, conduct and identify multiple instruments, sight read, orchestrate scores and compose music. Following my ...

Tony has worked as guitar accompanist for the past year and a half with our 700+ religious formation students from K-8 as well as our whole church assembly. He has played classical to contemporary Christian music with us and is fantastic. As a teacher myself, I see him as an ideal person to learn from. Tony is patient, kind, knowledgeable and tuned into kids as well as adults. You couldn't want for more in a teacher.

I strongly endorse Tony as a master pop and classical guitar teacher (as well as a dynamic, highly creative guitarist and pop/rock/folk tenor singer). I received a Master’s Degree from the Juilliard School in 1986 in voice, and he and I have worked on a weekly basis at churches and concerts since 2007. His mastery of incredibly rapid finger techniques in all major and minor scales, widely varied strum technique in so many different styles, understanding of audio production and vocal-instrumental microphone usage, as well as soulful improvised counter melodies is unmatched in my experiences. He also taught my son guitar, as well as many of my parishioners at my church, and they went on to playing frequently during church services and many other venues. His manner with children and teens is very gentle, humorous and witty, and is instantly beloved by all who meet him. Throughout my career I have rarely heard an artist who has more artistic and musical impact in concert or religious events than Mr. Tony. And the line of people wishing to meet him after concerts is so long that he does not leave events for more than 90 minutes or more. You cannot do better anywhere than having Mr. Tony as a teacher, colleague or friend.

I highly recommend Tony. He has taught both of my sons, Emmet and Connor, how to play the guitar with an emphasis on jazz and rock and learning the fundamentals needed for improvisational play. My eldest son, Emmet, began his guitar lessons in 7th or 8th grade and continued all the way through High School. Emmet commented to me that Tony was a really good teacher for his learning style and made it easy and fun. Emmet continued playing in college and used the fundamentals he learned from Tony to teach himself how to play the banjo. As a River Raft guide he was selected to be the guide on the "folk music" trip so that he could play along with the professional folk guitarist and vocalist. My second son, Connor, had played the saxophone and was in the jazz band in Middle School, and then decided he wanted to learn guitar in High School. He took lessons with Tony all through High School (9th through 12th) and learned all the chords and how to improvise. He enjoyed his lessons with Tony and progressed rather quickly. Tony knows how to teach according to each individual's needs which is very important. He customizes his lessons for students based on their interests and ability levels. He makes the lessons fun and interesting. I highly recommend Tony.
