About Chad

Originally from Little Rock, Arkansas, Chad is a director, actor, and composer based out of New York City. Chad is a member of Actor’s Equity Association and has had the privilege to work all across the country. Chad is currently the Associate Artistic Director for Shake on the Lake Shakespeare in Western New York. During his time there he has directed RICHARD III, TWELFTH NIGHT, A MISDSUMMER NIGHT’S DREAM, THE SANTALAND DIARIES, and ROMEO AND JULIET. Chad has acted Off-Broadway in New York City at the American Globe Theatre, among others, and with 5 different National Tours, playing lead roles in shows like: MACBETH (Macduff), THE FANTASTICKS (El Gallo), and A CHRISTMAS CAROL (Scrooge). Chad has also worked regionally at such theatres as: American Shakespeare Center, Farmer’s Alley Theatre, Pennsylvania Center Stage, Nebraska Theatre C

aravan, Oklahoma Shakespearean Festival, and is currently serving on Arkansas Shakespeare Theatre’s Artistic Collective, as well as a regular company actor and director.

In partnership with the Magik Theatre in San Antonio and the Arkansas Shakespeare Theatre, Chad has also overseen, adapted, and directed shows for “Shakespeare on the River,” which feature his orginal family musical versions of Shakespeare favorites, such as TWELFTH NIGHT and TAMING OF THE SHREW, peformed right on the famous Riverwalk in San Antonio.

Chad is also a multi-instrumentalist and a composer. He has written music and served as musical director for many productions, including: RICHARD III (AST), TWELFTH NIGHT (AST/SOTL), KING LEAR (AST), BOTTOM’S DREAM (AST), TAMING OF THE SHREW (AST), DOCTOR FAUSTUS (Sonoma Valley Shakespeare Company).

Chad has had the good fortune to also utilize his skills in education. Chad has served as a Guest Artist and Director for the University of Central Arkansas (directing David Ives’ THE LIAR), Bradley University (directing LITTLE WOMEN, THE MUSICAL), and the University of Arkansas at Little Rock (directing Shakespeare’s AS YOU LIKE IT). Chad also has teaching experience at universities like Penn State, Hendrix College, and the University of Central Arkansas.

Favorite recent credits include: Harold Hill in THE MUSIC MAN (Arkansas Shakespeare Theatre), Ferdinand in THE TEMPEST (American Shakespeare Center), and Jay and his alter ego Clair de Lune in MARE IN THE MEN’S ROOM (Off-Broadway).

I have worked with probably 4 dozen acting instructors, coaches, directors in my life, and Chad is the BEST OF THE BEST.
Through several years of working with him, I can vouch that with him you always know what you get: 100% quality, all of the time. He is fully present, meets you on eye level, is kind and understanding, and encourages/motivates you to go beyond what you thought was possible.
Whether it is audition prep, Shakespeare scene work, or general acting skills, there is nobody I would trust more than Chad to help me be the best actor I can possibly be.
Most importantly, with Chad I have always felt completely safe to explore characters, inner movements, and feelings in the process.
The only bad thing I can say about Chad is that he will absolutely ruin you for the next coach or director that comes along, since no one can come even close to his quality.

More important than my conservatory education and my experience as an educator and a performer is my passion for teaching music and acting and my undying belief that anyone can learn to be a musician and an actor.

I'm currently available to teach lessons in my own St. Augustine home studio and online around the globe.

I'm a cum laude graduate of Westminster Choir College in Princeton, New Jersey and a winner of its merit scholarship. I studied classical music there, grateful to have been taught by the likes of tenor Thomas Faracco, and renowned voice scientist and pedagogue, Dr. Scott McCoy.

After performing with the New York and Royal Philharmonics, the New Jersey and Virginia Symphonies, the American Boy Choir and the internationally renowned opera star, Andrea Bocelli, studying opera and piano at Westminster Choir College a

nd performance art and improvisational acting at East Carolina University in North Carolina, and appearing in shows and pageants across the east coast, I found my life's work in 2003 when I began teaching music.

I've taught hundreds of different students since 2003 with great success, from 5-year-olds with special needs to middle-aged professional opera singers, from a professor in Saudi Arabia to a 65-year-old doctor of music, from kids of Radio Disney to students of the famed Actors Studio in New York, from busy stay-at-home parents to retirees with bucket lists, from CEOs to touring singer-songwriters.

I've created and led a workshop about singing called, "The Whole Body Singer". I've written dozens of articles about music and music education for the blog at TakeLessons.com.

My extensive knowledge of the voice has encouraged and empowered hundreds of singers and prepared many of them to win competitions, pageants and auditions, as well as roles in operas and musicals, including lead roles in Limelight Theater and Curtis Camp productions. When a student comes to me in need of voice coaching, my job is to get to the root of mental blocks, to reveal why and how she's not singing at her optimum.

Before I received formal training at a conservatory, I learned piano on my own, and both have prepared me to teach almost anyone, with any experience, how to play.

The intensive training and education that I received at Westminster Choir College in songwriting, music theory and sight reading has benefited my students at every level.

My current work as singer and keyboardist in the acoustic folk rock duo, Timberwood, has strengthened my knowledge of a broad range of styles and genres. As a lifelong learner, I have a strong commitment to continuing my education. That's why I studied songwriting online with the Berklee College of Music in Boston in 2014.

In the lessons that I teach, I'm flexible, positive and encouraging. While I want my students to have fun and love music, not dread it, I expect hard work and persistence. I am caring, patient, nurturing, and compassionate.
In piano lessons, I usually allow the student to choose a piece with which to warm up and then move on to technique and repertoire.
In voice lessons, I usually warm up the singer and discuss technique and sight singing before focusing on song choices. Joan Frey Boytim wrote a book for voice that I like to use, and I like the Estelle Liebling exercises for the more advanced singer. Hanon exercises are a big part of my piano curriculum, and I enjoy the Bastien and Alfred books for young and old. I have used completely random songs pulled out of a piano bench and a karaoke CD for kids. I will use almost anything I can get my hands on if it means effectively teaching music.

Acting lessons consist of exercises and games that apply learned concepts, with an emphasis on stage acting and Meisner technique, as well as monologue and audition coaching.

Currently, I have only online availability for guitar students.
Students under the age of twelve will use the Alfred Guitar Book for Kids. All other students will start with the Hal Leonard Guitar Method.

Parents, siblings and spouses are always welcome to observe lessons quietly.

Shelley is fantastic. She made me feel at ease right away, even though I have no prior singing experience and I was incredibly nervous. As early as my second lesson, I could already hear a difference in my voice when I listened back to the recording of our session! She really knows what she's doing and it shows. I highly recommend Shelley. In addition to being a great music teacher - which she is - she's also so pleasant to work with! She's fast to respond, very accommodating with her schedule, friendly and easygoing, and professional. I started out thinking I'd just take a few weeks' worth of lessons to get out of my comfort zone. Over a year later, I'm still here, and looking forward to every week.

Shelley is by far the best voice teacher I have ever had. Within the short duration of time that I have worked with her, I have noticed that my voice has significantly changed (it feels and sounds better) after using her techniques. She knows what she’s talking about and offers substantial and specific criticism. She individualizes every student, in that she chooses repertoire that benefits a particular voice instead of assuming that every student has the same voice and strengths/weaknesses. This is a very important skill for a voice teacher to have. Shelley is also very good at time management within a lesson. Most importantly, she makes the experience fun! I would highly recommend Shelley to anyone who is looking for a voice teacher! Thank you Shelley!

I have been twirling for almost 30 years, and I have taught all different age levels. I have numerous resources for inspiration, questions, and material. I was the captain at the University of Arizona, and I currently have my own team here in Texas. I find students these days learn best when they have an individualized approach to teaching. We follow a curriculum, but we always tailor the program to the child. My own child needs extra attention when it comes to youth sports, so I have learned techniques to teaching children with disabilities. I have trained many twirlers who have gone on to win titles, and I have worked with Elite twirlers to help them perform and compete effectively. My goal is to create more coaches through my teaching and grow the sport of baton twirling.
