About Jill
I have been studying the singing voice for 18 years, and am highly trained to teach all voices, now including transgender singers! I recently attained my Masters of Music in Vocal Performance/Pedagogy, as well as certification to teach contemporary styles from Shenandoah Conservatory’s CCM Vocal Institute. I have a growing voice studio online and at my home, and I teach most genres, including musical theatre (including belting), pop, rock (including scream/distortion), R&B, jazz, folk, classical/opera, and choral. With 10 years' experience as a music educator, I've taught a wide range of music, including private voice lessons, children’s group classes for voice and piano, directing summer music and Glee! camps, directing youth and adult choirs, directing and accompanying worship music, and vocal directing musical theater shows.

I stri
ve to help my students achieve their musical goals; some accomplishments include: get cast in lead and paid roles for musical theater shows, prepare for choir performances and college auditions, qualify for Regional and All-State Choirs, and how to belt out your favorite karaoke song without strain! I truly believe that a strong technical foundation not only makes singing in any genre possible, but ensures healthy singing habits for life. I am committed to helping my students find their unique voice and share that voice with the world.

I only work with singers of ages 12+ in my private voice studio because I believe that younger children receive the most benefit by singing in a choir with their peers, rather than taking private lessons for their young, under-developed voices. Better instrument options for private lessons for younger children are piano, violin, or guitar - which in order to play, require finger coordination and theory comprehension. I assign music theory and ear-training exercises to my voice students during lessons, as being able to read music well is essential to becoming a well-rounded, independent musician.

Learning piano late in life!

It has been such a pleasant experience to take lessons from Jill. She is very positive and easy to understand in her instruction. I am a beginner in piano, and I feel I have learned a lot after only 3 lessons. She would be a wonderful piano teacher, no matter what your age!

About Janet
I am outgoing, encouraging, friendly, and have a good sense of humor. Music is a passion, and teaching is my vocation. I have been on the music faculty of Colorado State University, University of Puget Sound, and Duke University, and I was the contracted keyboardist with the Southwest Symphony Orchestra for many years. These professional teaching experiences have taught me much about teaching and the needs of students, and all this I bring to your lesson. My musical interests are not strictly classical. I adore jazz and pop and was even the lobby pianist for the Westin Hotels. I am here to help you with whatever style music you love.

*** Lesson Details ***
General Information about lessons—
• In-studio lessons on grand piano and/or harpsichord
• Ages 4 and to 99 years of age (and older!!)
• Levels beginner and advanced

• Classical, Pop, Broadway, and Standards

I offer lessons always with a smile, encouragement, and plenty of positive feedback. I have many years of experience teaching piano and music theory, and I promise that your lessons will be enjoyable and rewarding. Learning music must be built upon a strong relationship between teacher and student, and this is relationship involves good communication, honesty, open mindedness, and a recognition that all students are different and at various skill levels. These are my guiding principles. Although I am a classically trained pianist, I have experience as keyboardist with an eclectic trio playing anything and everything from pop to jazz, and as the lobby pianist with the Westin Hotels. I approach teaching by first knowing and understanding the student's musical goals, and teaching fundamentals, theory, and technique through the style of music that the student wants to learn. The Alfred Piano Methods—used by many universities—is my preferred instructional books for the beginner and intermediate student, but I am also quick to supplement with additional FUN material tailored to the student’s interests whenever possible. Learning music will promote confidence in your abilities and satisfaction in your accomplishments!

*** Studio Equipment ***
Living room w/ grand piano, harpsichord, and seating for parents

*** Specialties ***
I enjoy teaching students of all ages and have had success with students as young as 4 as well as 65 years of age. Particularly satisfying is helping adults reach life-long goals of learning music. I excel in teaching the classical repertory, but I have a passion for popular music and other types as well.

About Hannah
Do you want to learn to write and sing music? Are you interested in Melody, Lyrics, Arrangements or even the Business side of the industry? If any of these tickle your fancy, I would love to be your teacher! Whether you are a rockstar in the shower, or you have no musical experience, I can help you find the tools and to learn the skills you need to reach your goals!

Biography:
Raised in a family of devout music lovers, Hannah found the joy of singing and songwriting at a young age. When the time came she attended Brigham Young University, where she received her degree in Commercial Music with an emphasis in Singing and Songwriting. She teaches voice and songwriting alongside her career as an artist.

Teaching Philosophy:
I work closely with students to create a safe environment for learning and growth. We return the voice to its n
atural state with a science based approach. Each exercise has a purpose to help strengthen the systems used in healthy singing. Through this approach students effectively expand range, improve vocal tone and breath control. Once the voice is optimized through healthy technique, limitations fall to the wayside.

Age Range and Abilities Taught:
Male and Female 5 and up, I have extensive work with individuals with handicaps, learning disabilities and vocal damage due to things like muscular dystrophy, nodes, vocal cord paralysis, and reflux.

Currently, I am a New York Philharmonic Teaching Artist Apprentice, a private violin teacher at Nord Anglia International School in New York, and a mentor for the Music Advancement Program at The Juilliard School.

For the past two years, I have been a Teaching Artist at the Thurgood Marshall Academy Lower Sch
ool. I have also privately taught at the Aspen Music festival and School (P.A.L.S program). I have worked with the Education Programs at the Kennedy Center in Washington D.C. while being a National Symphony Orchestra Youth Fellow.

I absolutely love teaching and helping students find their own unique musical voice and musicianship. Every student learns in their own way, has their own needs and their own goals. As a dedicated teacher, I make sure to tailor each lesson to meet all the student's specific needs in order to help and guide them in becoming the best musician that they can be!

Below is my Biography, so you can get to know me a little bit more!

-- Zeynep Alpan Biography --

Turkish-American violinist, Zeynep Alpan, started studying the
violin at the age of 5 as part of her music therapy treatment for
her diagnosis of speech delay and Auditory Processing Disorder.
Immediately after being introduced to the violin, Zeynep began
to speak and following a year and a half of violin studies, she
had her first solo appearance with Vivaldi’s A minor Violin
Concerto, after winning the Peabody Concerto Competition.

As a soloist, chamber, and orchestral musician, Zeynep has
appeared in a myriad of venues such as Carnegie Hall, Royal
Albert Hall, and the Kennedy Center Concert Hall. She has
performed as a soloist with orchestras such as the Istanbul State
Symphony Orchestra, the National Philharmonic, the Aspen
Music Festival and School and the Juilliard Orchestra. She has
also performed as a soloist at the Turkish American Women
Leadership Event on Capitol Hill as well as at the Focus Festival:
On the Air! at Lincoln Center.

Zeynep co-founded the Turkish-American Cultural Laboratory (TACL), which brings together and integrates the Turkish and American cultures through the arts. As director of this organization, Zeynep produces a multitude of events including workshops in public schools in NYC and Istanbul, commissioning new works by American and Turkish composers, and inter-disciplinary performances in the US and Turkey. Future projects include partnering with Bilkent University for an Academy for young musicians and composers in August 2020. TACL is proud to be
sponsored by Turkish Airlines.

With a passion for teaching, Zeynep is also a New York Philharmonic Teaching Artist and a Morse Teaching Artist partnering with New York City Schools. She also leads the String Ensemble program at the Nord Anglia International School New York, is a teacher and mentor at the Music Advancement Program at the Juilliard
School, and is on faculty at the NY Department of Education and Lincoln Center’s Audition Boot Camp.

Community outreach and service is an integral part of Zeynep’s musical life. In 2013, Zeynep co-founded the group Sonatas Stopping Starvation where she organized and ran food drives, benefit concerts and has partnered with food banks all over New York. Zeynep was also awarded the Gluck Community Service Fellowship where she played in various health care facilities in New York.

Zeynep is the first prize winner in many competitions, some of which include the Juilliard Concerto Competition, the Dorothy DeLay Competition and the National Philharmonic Competition. In 2015, Zeynep was awarded the Ataturk Youth Achievement Award by the Ataturk Society of America. Since 2017, Zeynep has been a violinist of The Montclair Orchestra. Zeynep is a graduate of the Juilliard School under the Ahmet Ertegun Scholarship (B.M. ‘17, M.M. ‘19) and will be pursuing her Doctor of Musical Arts at Stony Brook University.

Aside from music, Zeynep enjoys taking business classes at Columbia University through the Barnard-Columbia-Juilliard Exchange program, drinking tea, biking, and being an avid dog lover.

My daughter had the pleasure of taking lessons with Zeynep this past summer in the PALS program in Aspen. She loved each week when it was lesson time. This is what Addison had to say, "She always would say the area I needed to work on nicely. I loved that she gave me knew things to learn at each lesson. If I didn't understand, she would keep encouraging me until I did." This was an excellent experience!

A unique and special experience! My daughter always looked forward to her sessions with Zeynep. She has been her mentor for the past two summers at the PALS program. Once after a lesson my daughter told me that she was surprised how much better she played the song after her session with Zeynep. I love the way Zeynep engages with my daughter and brings out the best in her.

I'm a student biologist, chemist, writer, violist, violinist, pianist, guitarist, and music arranger (not usually at the same time). I primarily play viola in symphony orchestras and chamber ensembles; occasionally I'll jump to violin in pit orchestra productions for musicals. I'm currently pursuing a major in Molecular Biology and a minor in Music. I've had an effusive passion for learning and an ineffable desire to share it with others for as long as I can remember. I hope to go into science education after graduate school, while still maintaining my strong ties to the music programs I'm fortunate to be around.

Subjects taught: viola, violin, piano, arrangement & orchestration

Experience:
- Youth Music Monterey Honors Orchestra, principal violist (2017-2019)
- Carmel High School Orchestra, principal violist (

- Carmel High School Pit Orchestra, violinist (2018-2019)
- Sandpiper String Quartet/Trio, violist (2018)

- Youth Music Monterey Pam and Chuck McGowin Award for Outstanding Contributions (2019)
- Central Coast Section Honors Orchestra (2018, 2019)
- California Orchestra Directors' Association Honors Orchestra (2017, 2018)

Recently, I was named Most Inspirational and given an Outstanding Achievement award for my work in my school's music program. I was incredibly lucky to be able to arrange and orchestrate 'Ripple' for the string orchestra, in honor of a late teacher. For the same teacher, I later arranged five more campy 70s tunes--among which were Mr. Blue Sky and September--for a benefit concert that I helped lead.

I'm unfortunately unable to give advice to advanced students, since I'm always learning myself. However, if you're just starting out on the viola or violin, I'd love to teach you using what I've learned! The memories of my own journey are fresh for me, and I know it can sometimes be discouraging or aimless. My goal is to guide you towards the blinding light at the end of the tunnel and to help you out of whatever plateau you're in, whether you're in a transition period to a higher-level orchestra or if you don't know where to start putting your fingers.
