About Jon
Out of all instruments, the sound of the violin is the closest to the human voice. Small wonder it is one of the oldest instruments still being played and it's tones can fit in to almost any style of music.

Learning the violin from me can include violin fundamentals such as bow use and finger placement, reading music notation, lead sheets, and playing by ear. All of these are skills that come into play at different times depending on what your goals are. A combination of these skills will give you a foundation of music knowledge that will serve you regardless of what style of music you want to play. Specific styles I've worked with are: Classical, Irish, Bluegrass, Rock and Symphonic Metal.

I tailor lessons to my students goals. I emphasize technique fundamentals, and help students apply the techniques they learn toward music t
hey enjoy playing, or composing.

In addition to playing violin, I write and arrange music. My song "The Burning Plain" won a national award for songwriting. If writing songs is your goal I can help you apply music theory concepts is ways that will make your songs stand out.

Jon is a great instructor that has been working with my 14 year old son Logan. He already has Logan working on vibrato which Logan has been terrified to try. Logan becomes more confident in himself with each lesson. He is also great at keeping me informed of Logan's progress.

I have also brought my younger son Liam to a lesson. Loam is autistic. Jon was very understanding and patient with liam and has told me if Liam is ever interested in playing he would give him lessons. All in all I am very happy with Jon as a teacher and would reccomend him.

About Chuck
Chuck moved to Portland, Oregon from Gainesville, Florida, where he was a prominent member of the music teaching and performing community for more than 25 years. Originally from Chicago, Chuck completed his BA in Music History and Masters of Music (MM) at the University of Florida. Chuck became obsessed with The Beatles when he began piano lessons at age 12. His first attempt at composing was actually improvising melodies over the ending chords to "Hey Jude". Along with playing Beatles tunes Chuck learned classic standards from a set of Reader's Digest Songbooks inherited from his grandmother.

Chuck has performed with classic rock, top 40, funk, R&B, and jazz groups, and has served as an opening act for Bela Fleck and the Flecktones, and legendary Texas bluesman Clarence "Gatemouth" Brown. As a soloist he's played classical musi
c, blues, jazz, and original compositions. Before devoting himself to music full time, he worked for 8 years as a radio announcer on WUFT-FM Gainesville hosting shows such as "Nothing but the Blues", "Montage" (acoustic jazz), and "Musica Antiqua" (Renaissance and Medieval).

Chuck has taught students of all ages and skill levels in piano, guitar, organ, flute, digital keyboards, recorder, and ukulele. He's also a multi-faceted composer whose instrumental pieces are infused with elements of classical, blues, and jazz styles.

Chuck's teaching philosophy: "In my 25 years of teaching I’ve found that everyone learns in different ways and at different rates of progress, so each of my students is treated as a unique individual. I try to get to know my students in the first few lessons so I can be more sensitive to their personalities. This helps me choose the best teaching approach for them. From the very first lesson I create a relaxed setting so students feel no apprehension, especially when trying something new. This allows them to feel free to take chances and experience playing music as something enjoyable, not a life or death situation! The biggest measure of my effectiveness as a teacher is when my students embrace new challenges and the opportunity to improve".

*** Lesson Details ***
My primary goal as a teacher is to present musical material in a way that keeps students excited about what they are learning. Even with absolute beginners, I will have a student playing actual songs that they are interested in as quickly as possible. Along the way I include fundamentals such as scales, strength-building exercises, rudiments of theory, and ear training. Some of the method books I use include the Alfred and Faber and Faber series, and Hanon's The Virtuoso Pianist, among many others. These materials are always supplemented with arrangements and transcriptions of popular songs and classical pieces, along with original exercises designed to teach specific styles and techniques. I also use interactive music websites to introduce students to concepts of music theory. The styles that I cover include classical, rock, jazz, and blues. As students progress in their creativity, I also introduce them to composition and improvisation.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Kawai K50 upright piano, music playback devices, Hammond C3 organ, multiple keyboards/synthesizers, acoustic and electric guitars, amplifiers, computer recording equipment; parents are encouraged to sit in on lessons.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I don't provide any specific equipment. Piano students should have either a well-tuned piano or full-sized weighted-key digital keyboard (Casio Privia, for example). Guitar students should have a well set up electric or acoustic guitar and an amplifier (for an electric guitar).

*** Specialties ***
I teach students of all ages and skill levels. The styles that I cover include classical, rock, jazz, and blues. I also teacher recording techniques using computer software including Ableton Live, Reason, and Pro Tools.

I've been taking ukulele lessons with Chuck for over a year now. I am always impressed with his musical knowledge and appreciate the way he goes beyond the songs and also teachers me musical notation, chord progressions, and more. My lessons are always fun, with just the right amount of challenge to keep my skill development moving forward. Thanks, Chuck!

I have a Master’s in Opera Performance from the Boston and New England Conservatories as well as graduating from Vocal Performance programs at Boston University and Western Washington University. I have sung professionally with Boston Lyric Opera, Children’s Theater Companies, churches and synagogue and have toured on the east coast as well as Athens, Greece. Premiering new music is a specialty. I can help you prepare your pieces for auditions.  My students have successful auditions for college opera and music theater programs, and as choir soloists.

Students gain a larger vocal range and an easy, natural way of singing whether it is in a rock band, choir or as a soloist. Together we find the joy of singing while building a solid technique.

I have worked with small children as a Musikgarten teacher and have toured artist residency
programs which introduce children to music and theater in schools.   I was adjunct faculty at the College of St. Benedict/St. John’s University and local music studios as well as maintaining my private teaching practice.

*** Lesson Details ***
I am persistent and positive! Working and performing with singers and master teachers has helped me to be a resourceful teacher who understands the process of becoming a singer. I believe that a sense of fun and play helps you to accomplish your goals quickly.  For beginners you will learn how the voice works and how to care for and develop your instrument, I recommend adults take 45" - 1 hour lessons weekly for skill building. The price of lessons DECREASES by 10% after each 5 lesson purchased for the first 15 lessons. Studio policy is located at VaaraMusic.com. We will choose music that interests you and helps to build your voice starting with basics before moving to more complex and challenging music. Understanding music theory and sight-reading will help you get the most out of your singing. After 3 - 6 months you should have a good command of breathing and an understanding of how to sing with an expressive tone. For the advanced student, I can help you work on trouble spots and give you tools to help with the changes that voices naturally go through.  I look forward to giving you my full focus and celebrating your growth and accomplishments!

*** Studio Equipment ***
Condo w/ open area with piano. Visitor's parking lot w/ seating in studio for parents to listen. Parents with younger siblings can use play areas outside.
Basic library of vocal music, giving the student a way to sample different kinds of songs before purchasing books or downloading songs on their own. Music stand, iPhone plug-in/Amp for accompaniments and examples you want me to hear.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I provide a basic library of vocal music at my home studio and will bring targeted books with me. Students should print out their favorite popular songs from such services as Music Notes website.
I expect my students to provide a keyboard, music stand and notebook as well as a low distraction environment.

*** Specialties ***
As an opera and musical theater, Oratorio and church singer, I help singers of all levels improve within their genre from popular music to opera. A good singing technique will help performers in any style stay healthy and enjoy an expressive singing instrument.

I have taught music for several years; I taught through college and graduate school. Upon graduating, I started my full time job, but have managed to teach on the side with no problems. I've played violin for 19 years and piano for 23 years.

Though I do not have a college degree in music, I have managed to maintain a roster of 10+ students. I view teaching music as highly important, and am committed to training the next generation of talented musicians.

*** Lesson Details ***
Students can expect a relaxed but challenging environment. I am highly encouraging, as I would not want to disillusion anybody from learning an instrument.

For violin I use a combination of methods based on the needs of the student. Suzuki is one method, combined with exercise books for positions/double stops. I also will emphasize duets, and then move tow
ards concertos and sonatas.

For piano, I use Alfred's Piano Library; I have found that this route is a good blend of theory and ear training.

After 6 months, a student can expect to have learned several pieces, and hopefully be able to perform these at a recital.

About David
My name is David, and I am an experienced piano teacher and voice coach for both male & female voices. In 2015, I was the Music teacher at a small (K-8) private school in Citrus Heights, California. There, my duties included providing individual lessons with students as well as classes in group settings.

I grew up learning piano from a private teacher (who's teaching methods were incredible and who I derive most of my musical teaching abilities from) starting at the age of 5.

In High School, I performed with our traveling Chamber Choir for multiple years, then went on to join the Cathedral Chamber Choir in college (the School's most Elite singing group).
At John Brown University (JBU)(Siloam Springs, AR), I studied as a Piano emphasis Music Major whilst also providing lessons part time.
If desired, I do have referral contacts of s
ome past students of mine, if you'd like a third party's personal opinion.

I teach all ages (kids, adults, you name it).

Learning music is a process that can start at any age. Doesn't matter if your child is 3 years old or if you are retired and would like to learn as well. The 'key' ingredient is your desire!

My piano lessons include: music theory, ear training, sight-reading, piano techniques, and performance.

Voice lessons include: vocal exercises for improving your articulation, breathing, improving vocal range, ear-training, & vocal development.

My rate is $25/ 40 minutes.
I unfortunately am without a piano in my own home, but I am more than willing to provide lessons in YOUR home (provided you have a piano / keyboard to use). The price may vary (only slightly) based on rate of travel time & gas.
Text, call, or e-mail me via Craigslist to schedule a discounted first lesson and
to get more information.

I will do my best to help share the wonderful world of music with ANY and ALL that desire to learn.
I look forward our lessons!

David is not only a delightful person, he's also an excellent piano teacher. I'm a piano teacher myself yet I needed some help with improvisation--my weakest link. He patiently walked me through adding chords and harmony to a melody. I learned a lot of new ideas, such as leaving out the emotive third interval...that's better utilized in the right hand. He demonstrated how to take a familiar classical piece, namely Mozart's Rondo Alla Turca, and play it completely by ear. His musicianship is lovely and he is patient and thorough in his explanations. His knowledge of music theory is complete and sound. I highly recommend him to anyone looking to start or continue music lessons. He is truly passionate about music and his profession.

I have played hand drums and percussion instruments for 26 years. and am now offering handpan and hand drum lessons for beginning and intermediate players. for online lessons you would need to have your own handpan or drum . but for in person lessons in Portland Oregon, you would not need to have your own handpan or hand drums as you can use mine.
