James H.

Fort Collins, CO

About James

I was born into a musical family and grew up in N.Y.C. This included my father who was a guitar teacher, composer and band leader,my grandfather who was a violin maker and my great aunts who performed Hungarian Folk Music on the zither, violin, mandolin and guitar for President Roosevelt at the White House. I was exposed at a young age to the art of guitar teaching as I "tagged along" to my father's private lessons. This gave me a great foundation on which to build my own unique guitar teaching style. Musical performance has also been a part of my life ever since I first played the ukulele and sa
ng at a wedding when I was only six years old. My experiences in performance also include playing rhythm guitar and forming a band in Middle School, performing at High School as well as college functions, being a member of a touring Stage Band while at college, directing children and adult choirs as well as worship leading for a local church and entertaining at assisted living facilities. I have also produced a demo cd of original compositions. I have been helping people learn the guitar ever since High School. While at college I also studied Music Theory. Over the years I have taught both private as well as group guitar lessons. Currently, I teach private guitar lessons at a local music workshop as well as group lessons for beginner as well as more advanced levels at a recreation center. In addition I also teach private and group ukulele lessons.I have taught the guitar to a wide array of students with various backgrounds and of all ages. For instance I currently teach guitar to a six year old. I have also taught guitar to baby boomers as well as senior citizens. My vast experience in guitar teaching will help the new student to get the individual care and attention that he or she deserves.

*** Lesson Details ***
My students can expect to learn, grow and develop their guitar playing skills at the individual pace which fits each student uniquely. I present a fun, laid back learning experience for the student within a structured environment with goals for each coming lesson. I believe each lesson should be building foundations for future lessons. I encourage my students to enjoy their learning experience and use their innate abilities to the fullest. I have developed my own curriculum which is a combination of musical terms, guitar chord charts, songs as well as other helpful material to get things started on a proper note.Usually, a beginner student learns at least one song during the very first lesson. I encourage my students to ask questions and strive to develop open communication. If needed, I begin new students on "partial chord formations" until their skills develop to more complex chording. In time, after basic skills have been mastered,I give my students the opportunity to request songs that they would like to learn. I would expect that in six months my student will have learned an array of songs which we will then build upon for more complex and varied musical presentation. This includes the development of right hand strumming and picking methods. I also encourage my students to challenge themselves, as I have found learning to play the guitar is indeed a life-time event.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I provide the music material and lessons for all my students. I expect my student to provide their own guitars, amps, guitar stands, etc.

*** Specialties ***
I teach folk, folk-rock, jazz , classic rock, classic pop and contemporary artists. I specialize in acoustical guitar but have also done some electric guitar teaching as well.I offer students to sing along with their playing which helps keep them on track.

For each student, I use a different set of pedagogical tools designed to get them to the goals they want. The main goal I have for all my students is that their fundamentals on their instrument will be at the level that they can complete their goals with ease. Over their time with me, they will have the skills to coach themselves when they practice and tackle any music they come across.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I expect them to provide and music stand and their music. These are both things that they need to have at their home for practice.

Thanks so much! We are here on vacation and appreciate the availability of Bill. My daughter has a region audition when we get back home and she needed help with her scales.

I whole-heartedly recommend Ryan as a private instructor. My middle school-aged son had enjoyed learning to play saxophone in his school band, but towards the end of his 1st year was getting bored by the slow pace. After beginning lessons w Ryan (through the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music) his interest, enthusiasm & skill improved dramatically & he began to excel as a musician. Ryan was soon guiding him through more complicated compositions, and the joy of playing was evident every time my son picked up his sax. With Ryan’s training, he learned to prepare for auditions, and as a result has won a seat (and solos!) in several State & city select bands, jazz ensembles and every group his school has to offer.

Ryan’s personality was a great fit for my son. He’s very professional, while being completely approachable, patient & encouraging, and his love of music is passed along to his students. His versatility & broad knowledge of musical genres allow him to introduce new directions for his students to explore. With Ryan, my son studied classical compositions and also deepened his interest in Jazz. The chance to work with Ryan on his improv skills was very valuable to him...it brought a new level of confidence & comfort to his playing.

I would recommend Ryan to anyone looking for a private music instructor, either for themselves or for their son or daughter!

My daughter's school has had 2 band directors in as many years. And while the new director is good, I didn't think he had time for individual students when starting this new job. He was busy with marching band, concert band, jazz band, pep band, concerts, etc. My daughter was frustrated and ready to quit music (band). I choose Ryan to tutor my daughter one-on-one. I'm so glad I did. After only a few months now, but her skills have greatly increased. She shows more knowledge, confidence, and ability than after a whole year of school band! She knows scales and can play songs that her band hasn't started yet. In less than 4 months, she went from barely playing scales and a couple songs to playing almost anything in her music book. She now gets straight A's in band and loves to play. Ryan is very skilled at teaching many instruments. He knows how to explain concepts at the students' level, and makes lessons fun. I would highly recommend hiring Ryan to teach your child.

Bobby S.

Longmont, CO

About Bobby

There are few things more satisfying and rewarding than being able to play an instrument. My childhood was shaped by the lessons I learned from playing the violin - which I began learning at age 5.

For the first 18 years of my "career" I played mostly classical music as part of several youth orchestras and ensembles. I also won numerous regional talent competitions as a solo player. In recent years, I've become interested in mastering the other musical genres, including country, rock, hip-hop, and jazz. I frequently play and perform with looper pedals or as part of a band. You can find exa
mples of my many styles on my youtube channel: www.youtube.com/c/bobbystoverviolin.

My main goal is to help you learn and grow into a capable violin player so you can fully enjoy all that this amazing instrument has to offer. I am interested in teaching any student with a sincere desire to learn. Whether your goal is to earn a spot in your local orchestra, or just be able to jam with your buddies, I will get you there!

Jaime R.

Longmont, CO

About Jaime

Hello, my name is Jaime and I'd love to share my knowledge on a couple subjects that I really enjoy with others. One being playing the guitar, which I have been doing since I was 12, and the other being programming in Perl, which I have been doing for over 15 years now. Two completely different subjects, two things I really love and can teach well.

I taught guitar for the first time when I was in junior high when my teacher recruited me to help teach others in guitar class. I've since tutored students on various subjects inside and outside the classroom and am often sought after at work to
train others. I have even been sought out by the training group to train on subjects outside my core competency. I'm a very easy going guy, very easy to get along with and learn with. No intimidation, we'll learn at your pace.
