Don was a great instructor. I only had a limited amount of time to dedicate to learning the Ukulele during the summer, but he helped me meet and exceed my goals. He is very friendly and personable. I highly recommend anyone interested in lessons that they give Don a try.

This has been a truly enjoyable experience.

Don was teaching several of my charter high school students in guitar/vocal and music production. After a quick observation of his classes, I signed up for lessons as well. I am an adult student and have been taking guitar/vocal performance lessons with Don for three years. This has been a truly enjoyable experience. Don combines proper technique with enough creativity to make our lessons fun. Don is an inspirational teacher. He tuned into my musical tastes and tailored his lessons to my desires. I highly recommend Don to any adult or youth students interested in furthering their skills and enjoyment of music performance.

Family Fun on Ukelele and Strumstick

Don has been wonderful to work with as a Ukelele and Strumstick instructor. I had an idea to get music lessons for my husband and 5 year old daughter as a Christmas gift. The thought was to have special Daddy and daughter time; sharing something that my husband loves to do. Don has worked with us to create a whole experience for them around music lessons. Don has succeeded in building an environment for our daughter to enjoy the music lesson experience. The first time she played 'hot crossed buns' brought a tear of joy to my eyes. He has even included me in the group lessons on Strumstick. My husband has expanded his knowledge of musical instruments and enhanced his playing skills with Don's skillful instruction. Don has made the whole experience delightful for our family.

Karla D.

Minneapolis, MN

About Karla

Welcome! I am so glad you're looking into violin/fiddle lessons, and I would love the opportunity to work with you. I am an experienced teacher with a love for music and working with students. I teach classical and fiddle techniques and repertoire in a fun, relaxed environment, and my goal for you is to build a foundation of solid technique so that you can play absolutely anything you want!

Once we get into a schedule, we'll work on solidifying repertoire and exercises as well as a practice schedule. For beginners, our focus will be on forming correct posture and bow hold, and we'll dive ri
ght in to reading and understanding music. More intermediate students will enjoy building their repertoire and exploring other genres, such as folk, fiddle, Celtic, jazz, and popular music. For advanced students, we will spend time focusing on the details of your current pieces, including musicality, technique, relaxation, and practicing techniques. We can also do audition preparation if you're preparing for an audition of some kind.

I am also a passionate composer, as you'll see from the videos below. I love composing folk melodies and experimenting with rhythms. If you'd like to learn my writing techniques and other extended techniques of the violin, I would love to teach those as well.

Karla D is 2013 graduate of Luther College, where she performed three years as the concertmaster of the Luther College Symphony Orchestra and frequently appeared with her alma mater’s jazz orchestra as a featured soloist. Most recently she served as the Program Coordinator and Teacher for the Aspen Music Festival and School’s Beginning Strings program, an initiative that brings group classes and private lessons to elementary-aged violinists, violists, and cellists in the Aspen, Colorado area.

Karla’s current focus is with folk duo The OK Factor; she loves the time spent traveling the Midwest region on tours, producing recordings of their original folk music, and conducting educational workshops with string students. Over the last five years Karla has also managed a private violin studio, both in-studio and online, and has cultivated a passion for communication, leadership, and musical genre-bending through her work with The OK Factor and collegiate crossover string ensemble, Strangz.

Studio album credits include composer, performer, and producer for The OK Factor’s Water Street(2014) and Live at the Lake (2014) as well as TenString Serenade’s debut album The Departure (2009), and featured soloist on Luther College Jazz Orchestra’s albums Transformations (2010) and Aquarela (2013).

Where some teachers only go over the basics, Karla does an amazing job in holistically teaching you the art of playing the violin. I was uncomfortable to first start lessons again... mostly in an online fashion but after Karla's personable character, I was hooked. She really knows here stuff but even more enjoys it. Thank you Karla for the help.

Katherine C.

Minneapolis, MN

About Katherine

Music has been an essential component of my life for as long as I can remember. I started piano and cello lessons when I was very young, and have never looked back. I am passionate about sharing my love of music with every student. I always strive to create a positive and encouraging environment in my studio, where each student learns to recognize and capitalize on their own unique strengths, while developing awareness of areas for improvement, and the ability to self-correct. My goal is to guide students towards being self-sufficient musicians with the tools they need to express themselves cr
eatively through music.
I graduated with a BA in music from St. Olaf College, and have taught cello students from ages three on up since starting as a student there. I have worked with children of all ages and backgrounds in a wide variety of settings, and I always work hard to tailor my teaching style to the individual needs and personality of each child.
