Shellora L.

Homestead, FL

About Shellora

I am a recent graduate from FIU. I worked as an AmeriCorps member with City Year at Homestead Senior High, where I work in a 9th grade Algebra 1 class as well as after-school tutoring for grades 9-12 in various subjects. I have had experience with students of all ages. I love spending time with students and helping them to learn new things. The subjects I have experience in includes writing, reading comprehension, math, (up to college level pre-calculus/trigonometry), life sciences, and social sciences, and history. I also give beginning to intermediate piano lessons for the past three years.

Previously, I volunteered as a mentor and tutor at an elementary school, where I assisted students with homework, as well as reading and math skills. I volunteered as a classroom assistant in an ESOL class at a high school where I helped students better their English oral and writing skills, as well as tutoring for any class where they needed help understanding the subject such as history, English, and biology. I also worked in a 10th grade biology class where I assisted students with classwork and was able to create and teach lesson plans. I was a private tutor to college students assisting with research, paper planning, and proofreading as well as math up to trigonometry/pre-calculus, social studies, and biology. In addition, I have taken classes in a program where I was able to create lesson plans for life science classes and teach them to students in 5th grade science, 7th grade life science, and 10th grade biology classes. I also volunteered as a computer aide for the library adult services for 4 years, where I helped people with computer basics, the internet, and document creation. I am a very dependable and trustworthy person, and I love having fun with students.

Dillon S.

Miami, FL

About Dillon

I have been a band leader for 4 years in my church's youth group as well as a music teacher and college student. I have earned my Associate's degree in Music Education at MDC with a focus on jazz guitar and I have a fairly diverse knowledge of different genres of music (primarily worship/church music, rock, pop, and jazz). I have also played drums, bass, and sung in numerous bands throughout the years.

I am currently studying K-12 Art Education at FIU and am mostly experienced in portrait and still life drawing and painting in pencil, charcoal, India ink, acrylic and various other materials
.

I am hoping to improve my teaching skills through this platform and I firmly believe in learning from my students as much as they learn from me. I am laid-back and a kid at heart, and I find it important to teach with a sense of humor and to make lessons less of a tedious ritual (especially for younger kids) and more of an enjoyable hobby that they will want to spend time on and get better at.

(For the record, I'm also a huge geek. I love video games, superheroes, sci-fi, fantasy, board games, cartoons/anime, technology/science... If you're into something, feel free to talk to me about it!)

My daughter is a beginner and Dillon is so patient and kind to her. He took the time to explain every details, and he always make copies of the lessons they go over, so she can practice at home. We started out with 30 minute and after getting to know and like this teacher we increased the time to 1 hour.

How Often Should You Tune a Piano?
Just as you go to the doctor for check-ups from time to time, your piano needs maintenance and care throughout its life. You may notice, especially if you have a keen ear or a tendency to sing along with your practice, that your piano drops in pitch, particularly during the summer and winter months. This is because your piano is mostly made of wood, and your wooden soundboard will contract when the weather is drier -- or the heating is on! -- and cause the pitch of the strings to drop. While kn
How Tension Affects Your Voice (And What to Do About It!)
As a beginner singer, it's important to understand how unnecessary tension affects your tone and your breath support. Here, NY teacher Nadia B. shares what to keep in mind and how to combat that tension...   Singing is, in many ways, a very natural activity. We all have a voice, and it is meant to be used to communicate in speech and in music. However, when one delves more into the art of singing through voice lessons, practice, and performance, tension sometimes creeps in. It can see
