Geoff A.

Hillsboro, OR

About Geoff

I am a professional musician with a career spanning 40 years (touring and studio work), and 30 years teaching music.

What do you want to learn? How far you go is up to you!

*** Lesson Details ***
BEGINNING students start with the fundamentals, what you must know in order to begin playing songs, all the right ingredients to create a solid foundation. You will be encouraged to study and to venture into the unknown, using what you're learning as a springboard to discover new things.

INTERMEDIATE & ADVANCED players will be assessed on knowledge and abilities; areas of struggle and what i
s desired to be learned. Within a couple weeks, you will reap the benefits with new ideas bubbling to the surface moving you closer to your goals, with emphasis that short term goals are important as well.

Everyone learns at a different pace. But with patience and persistence, if you do the work, there will be results that can be measured, and you will achieve success!

*** Studio Equipment ***
I provide an amplifier for guitar and bass students, and have a piano for piano students.

*** Specialties ***
Having played many styles over the years, I am able to play in most of the popular forms. All music is based on the same fundamental things. It's how they are used that defines a given style.

Geoff takes the time to make sure his students are really learning how to develop good habits when playing guitar and takes care to spend as much time as it takes to solidify different techniques. He cares that his students are actually learning and doesn't cut corners, making sure things are easy to understand. He's patient, friendly, and skillful, and each lesson is something to look forward to.

Joel J.

Beaverton, OR

About Joel

Joel J. took his first guitar lesson in September 1980. A lifelong student and teacher of guitar and improvisation, Joel began playing in bands at age 14. Seeking a higher awareness of guitar, he left school at U-Michigan to study at Musician's Institute in Hollywood, CA. While there, he received a scholarship to attend Berklee College of Music in Boston. In 1997 he received his B.M.S. in Professional Music with a concentration in Private Instruction and Studio Arranging from Berklee. No stranger to the industry, Joel has recorded 3 CD's with rock bands Michigan and Color Phobos as primar
y composer and lead guitarist. Joel is former owner of The Great Hall Restaurant and Music Room where raw live performances occurred every night. He currently plays with Portland area blues-rock band The Fabulous Badcats, and co-hosts an open jam every week in SE Portland. Embark upon a discovery of music born in the fires of your own passion as Joel will lead you through a course of study based entirely upon your goals and desires for your relationship with the guitar. with a vivid memory of studying guitar as an eight year old, Joel teaches all ages with patience and understanding.

*** Lesson Details ***
Lessons with Joel are like Choose Your Own Adventure stories. The curriculum is based on the Performance programs of Berklee College and Musician's Institute, with supplements by Mel Bay, Hal Leonard, and including the music of YOUR FAVORITE ARTIST. We will navigate through a rigorous study of the instrument, including metronome study, sight-reading and notation, ear training and everything else. But once we cover the basics, the course will take the direction of your interests and what is fueling your fire. Keeping true to what motivates you will keep the lessons interesting even when the commitment becomes difficult..and it will..but as you may already know, nothing worth having is easily achieved. Come take a deep look at the most popular and versatile instrument of the modern age, and master your own style of guitar playing with a teacher whose own commitment to music education is absolute.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Studio room in private home- with piano, electric and acoustic guitars and equipment, on-screen learning; chairs, piano bench, room for parents to observe lesson.

um, mute, & play notes on the guitar.

We can play as a band too. When you are ready, I love to bring out the drum or backing tracks to your favorite artists songs while you play guitar and I play what your not, giving you the feel of a live group situation that can make learning at your lesson more fun.

Genres include Acoustic, Blues, Country, R&B, Funk, Latin, Jazz, Rock, Pop and more.

Joannah B.

Forest Grove, OR

About Joannah

Music has been an integral part of my life for as long as I can remember. In the evenings after listening to my mother teach piano lessons to a studio full of students, I would climb into her lap and beg her to teach me to play the piano. I eagerly soaked up everything that she taught me, enthralled by this incredible language of music.

I continued studying piano with my mom all the way through high school, adding much-anticipated voice lessons in high school as well. We came from such a small town that we had to travel two hours round trip for my weekly voice lessons.

As an under
graduate student at Willamette University in Oregon, I launched into further piano and voice studies earning a Bachelor of Music in Voice Performance. I began teaching seriously in the spring of 2009 as a member of NATS, and continued as an adjunct faculty voice instructor at Willamette University for two years. I also played piano for the Opera Workshop class as we prepared for two full length operatic productions: Our Town by Ned Rorem, and Hansel and Gretel by Engelbert Humperdinck.

I have since completed a Master of Music in Voice Performance at The Boston Conservatory where I specialized in Vocal Pedagogy and Classical Vocal Performance, and continue teaching private voice and piano lessons in Cambridge to students of all ages.

I seek to create a nurturing, encouraging and appropriately challenging environment for my students. I want to help each student deepen their curiosity and love for music while simultaneously empowering and equipping them with skills to achieve their musical goals.

I started taking lessons with Joannah after a 10-year hiatus from playing the piano. Joannah made me feel right back at home behind the keys! She took the time to understand my goals and my musical preferences and combined the two to put together an exciting yet reasonable lesson plan for me each week. She was also flexible with my busy work schedule, and had no problem changing or canceling a lesson if something came up. I highly recommend Joannah as a musical instructor for folks of all ages--she is wonderful!
